here is what is where caldor is in now in colvin plaza in albany. this caldor closed in the spring 1998 batch (queensbury / glens falls ny) one did too. what was this caldor like? many of these caldors in the albany area because home improvement places.

here is what is now in the former 106,000 sf caldor in syracuse on fairmount ave. it is wal-mart, which will soon be relocated to a supercenter in the old camillus mall. it is easy to tell it was a caldor. it opened in fall  1994 and closed in teh spring 1996 batch when they pulled out of syracuse and rochester ny.

thats almost 100 % how my caldor looked only there wasent any white on it it wa spanted a tan colller mine opend in 1965 but got alor of renmtvations till it clsoed and became kohls:(

Here is a full list of the Albany area Caldor locations and what has become of them. d_fife, this may answer some questions for you. Thank Billy Gr for some of the Albany-Central Ave location info.

Albany - Central Avenue - Opened in the 70's. Older location with orange lettered logo. Closed 1998. Became a Grand Union SuperSave supermarket(after much renovation) for about a year(at one point, grand opening and going out of business signs were on the building at the same time). Now a Home Depot after the GU was closed and demolished.

Crossgates Mall - Rare two level location in Crossgates Mall. Had the orange lettered logo at first, but switched to the modern logo. Opened 1984. Closed 1999. Best by and H&M now occupy each level of the former store.

Latham - Inside Latham Circle Mall. Opened in the 80's. Modern logo. Closed in 1999. Was demolished for a Lowes.

Clifton Park - Clifton Country Mall( now Clifton Park Center). Opened 1985. Demolished for two level Boscovs location.

Schenectady - NY 7 at I-890. Opened in the mid 80's. Became Ames in 2000. Ames closed in 2002. Now split between Best Fitness, and more recently a Price Rite.

Well, it was never always an Ames, so it must have been something else beforehand. And judging by the building style, it looks like an earlier Caldor store. I don't know what else it could've been. It wasn't always an Ames though.

I can't believe how hard it is to track down the rainbow logo for Caldor. All the Caldor stores that used to be around me had the rainbow design and I'm surprised how few high quality logos exist. Does anyone have any artifacts from Caldor like bags or anything? Any good pictures of the rainbow design?

Just to note - the Albany one was (more or less) demolished and rebuilt as the Grand Union, which of course was then demolished when Home Depot built.

As for the Rensselaer (East Greenbush) store, it WAS always Ames, in this case always not being a long time.  The rest of the plaza (from the ShopRite end to what was then Rite Aid) was constructed first, with the Ames (and space for 1 smaller store) being added a couple years later - they probably opened in the late 80's (give or take).  I don't know why it has a Caldor style - maybe just a copy (since there aren't that many Ames - at least aorund here - that were built from scratch) if they didn't have their own building "style".

Another thought is that maybe Caldor had thought about building there at one point and chagned their minds (since it seems strange that the Ames portion was built after the rest of the plaza).

I've always thought it was strange that it followed that design too. Maybe it was the kind of situation down in Poughkeepsie with the unopened Grand Union. What about the Glenmont store? Was that built from scratch? I can't think of anything that used to be in there before Ames. Oh, and I also edited my above post with the location listings.

ames in glenmont was built from scratch, about 3 weeks ago I saw them doing work on it.

now back to caldor. did you know they were going to open one in new bedford mass when they opened the 6 stores in 1996, but they backed out for some reason and why did they back out of new bedford. but 3 years ago I saw the building in new bedford where they were going to put it and Ames opened where Caldor would have opened and the Ames there looked like a caldor building. I still want to know why they had a short life in the syracuse and rochester ny markets and I heard they were considering buffalo, if they made it to buffalo I wonder if they would have pulled out of there too. I bet buffalo would be a distribution issue because Buffalo is so far into new york. I bet caldor if they were in buffalo would have (though I never been to buffalo, but have heard of the area and researched it) gone to cheektowaga, towanda and a few other places maybe.  I like caldor's 90s look, silver with the red logo. that is sleeker. northamtpon massa nd burlington mass were that way though they were built in the 1970s. Caldor only had 60 stores by 1980. and expanded into new jersey, rhode island, new hampshire, pennsylvania in the 1980s, but never had any in maine or vermont (well of course vermont).

i still dont think it was a caldor unless it was one that opend along time ago and possble relocated but some ames stores used that look on some of there stores or maby it was another store before maby jamesway i know jamesway has used that type of wall style before the one in carmel ny had that look

Last Ames info in the Caldor post - yes, that whole plaza in Glenmont was new - I'd guess that it was built all at once, but not sure there - of course the Grand Union and CVS moved there from the Kmart plaza across the street - the Kmart plaza also had a flea mkt for a time in an outbuilding that was a garage style in the corner of the plaza (they moved there from the former Grant's in the plaza with Hannaford in East Greenbush (at 9&20 & 4).

i wanna say that caldor opend in 1991 because teh caldor in peekskill NY had that same look and i beieve it opend in the ealry 90s or maby it opend in the 80s but yea im not suprized teh middletown one is vacant if u look around theres evrey stroe amagble there
