I'd like to see a pic of the Danbury one as well. I'm almost certain it was the last and only CT stores to receive a late renovation (understandable too, since that property and around the mall was very old up until about 2004).

I'm so disappointed I never took a pic of it when it existed because I remember mentioning how old it looked (it was creepy too, just approaching the building almost made me believe I was going through a time warp).

Does anyone know exactly when this one received it's blue and yellow glass renovation? I remember a time where I had been away from Danbury for about half a year but it seems like it was still old-school just a year back.

With all these Toys "R" Us stores closing (all around/outside of CT), this might be a prime opportunity to take pictures of the vacant properties. I'll be working on that soon...

Also...

The one on 2251 West Cermak Road in Chicago is still 1980s old according to Google Maps/Earth (it's got a "2005" mark on it). You can also see the pic of it on the contractor's webpage -- inexplicably no year submitted (Henry Bros./The Ramos Group)

However!

I went ahead and checked out the Toys "R" Us's webpage and they claim there is no Toys "R" Us located on "2251" but instead there's one down the way on  7451 West Cermak Road, North Riverside, IL 60546. This leads me to believe they've either relocated or readdressed themselves.

Furthermore...

Google Maps, Yahoo Yellow Pages and Toys "R" Us's page seem to conflict. I'm willing to bet TRU's page is accurate while Yahoo Yellow is a tad outdated along with Google Maps which havent updated their satellite imagery since 2005.

Here's the image Google Maps sees a Toys "R" Us, which is clearly distinct, on 2251 Cermak...

Danbury Toys "R" Us might've received it's interior renovation in 1998 but the exterior remained old for a number of years after. It probably got revamped only a little over a year back. While I haven't the proof, I have a sharp memory and I've visited Danbury many times in my day. Also, I didn't have my license in 1998 and I remember driving myself to Danbury and seeing it outdated which means it was old up until 2002 or a little beyond.

I really wish we had some pictures of it! It was such a retro building (and one of the only ones in CT)!

yea thats what im probley thinking the danbury toys r us is as old as me it even opend around the time i was born 1988 but it use to have the toys r us graffe a s apart of the logo but they took it off

I went to the Newington TRU Saturday for a birthday gift for someone and the store was quite busy. They are smart to stay open with Stew Leonards coming to Caldor in 2007. It will do even better when the new food store opens.

March 13, 2006: Update on the East Haven, CT former Toys "R" Us/Bradlees plaza. I went down Frontage Road where it was... the entire property is fenced-off dirt and the Carmax is in the process of being built. Nothing is up yet... looks like I missed out capturing the abandoned old building.

I came back with photos... but not of the property (the area is like a warzone with all the construction going on in the area). I stopped in the National Wholesale Liquidators and found some cool old shopping cart sightings from Caldor, Ames, Bradlees and Lechmere! I left quickly... the area is kind of run down and nasty to be around.

new haven is not one of the best areas to be around.

i odont think so the rainbow walls and the brown and such was teh look they did in the 80's

it kida looks like this one that opend in 1985 and clsoed in 2003

i also think this is simaler to how the danbury one looked when it opned in 1988

First off, the Toys R Us on Wolf Road in Albany - this is an older store and had the brown roof at one time.

The 2nd is the (now closed) Kids R Us in Crossgates Commons (across Washington Ave from Crossgates Mall) in Guilderland.  This store was previously in the Northway Mall (in fact, it took up what had been about 3 large store spots in the "Off Price" section which was at the far left of the mall looking from the parking lot.  As you entered that set of doors, KRU was the ONLY thing on the right side until you got back to the corner.

the one in albany opened in 1978.

this is the toys r us in clay new york. it was built in 1988 and is the only toys r us left around syracuse. it is a big one. yet it is the first time in years i had been to a brown one.
