I agree. I also was at the manchester one a month ago and my pictures where posted a few pages back. the parking lot is terrible and the lettering is in bad shape. bradlees for some stoers only renovated the inside, yet caldor renovated most stores, but bradlees did not and it is surprised for that and other reasons that bradlees outlived caldor by 2 yrs. bradlees should have renovated most store exterior. the best party about that is that they are all different looking instead of the you have seen one you have seen them all.

Marc82

If any of ya'll want to see the Manchester Bradlees  you better go soon. The residents have submitted a petition to City Hall to see if the city will buy it rip it down and build a park or library there!

What??? I'm sure the store looked decent in the interior. And yes, Bradlees did put time in to renovate their stores. The ones near me were decent. Sorry if they weren't near you, but not ALL were like that.

chains have a tendancy to close newer stores as they did not work out, catch on or make as much money as they thought and newer stoers tend to have higher rents as the older stores have lower rents and a long establishment in the community or city. all chains have closed many newer stores. yes a lot of bradlees stores wehre run down, like both in nashua, north andover mass, woburn mass, westbrook me, hartford ct and manchester ct, new city ny etc etc. but I know they closed an awful looking east haven CT store in teh first wave and closed the one in lewiston me and lewiston is a dumpy city and that store must have been bad and the store looked old (I never went to the store, but saw where it was yeras after it closed)

Nice rare pictures! Welcome to the forums!

Thanks, glad to be here, I've been lurking here for a while, just finally decided to register and post.

I can't say much about Bradlees, never been to one as they didn't have them here in the South. But I heard of them and checked out their website some before they closed and decided to save those pics.

Those pictures barely tell what most Bradlees looked like in their final days. Ones near me were brown/tan and dingy looking until the very end. Store usually smelled like salted, buttered popcorn too near the entrance...

I never shopped at Caldor but from what i know, the stores were quite nice and modern.  Caldor was often presented as an upscale discount store chain.  Bradlees was not like Caldor like you said but they managed to remain in business a bit longer.  It makes me wonder why Caldor did not GOB later than that if they had better locations and stores?

I know that you had a bad experience with Bradlees but not all stores were old, yucky and located in bad parts of towns.  Kohl's took over many former Bradlees.  :yup:

newspapers sometimes make a mistake and I know this closed in 2001, i kept tabs on which ones closed before 2001 and the ones that closed before 2001 in Ct where in east hartford, east haven, derby, new london, groton, meriden, newington,  and one in west hartford closed long ago

Wow! I could bid high on that and get it for my HO train layout! It'd be cool if the inside was actually stocked with merchandise and carts....:boring::saint::o

It almost reminded me of a 1970s retail building like my local Caldor stores with the rock/pebble walls.

Yeah, we used that type of paint (but green) a few years ago, when repainting our dining room. I think the bumpy/grainy texture is from sand (?) in the paint itself.

My mom bought this plastic storage container to put her CDs in at a Tag Sale today. It came form Bradlees originally.
