Love their stores, and the quality. Sure, they're more expensive, but i think it's worth every penny. They have nice, clean stores, and i enjoy the shopping experience.
sure most people consider them a BIG BOX but when u go into there stores they look how a dept store looks they reminde me of caldor i love the look of the store and there selction is good to
Here's the earliest style of Target that I know. This one is in Buffalo, New York
Here's the second design. It came out in 98. This is one of the Albany, NY stores(and the first Target to come into Albany), at the old Northway Mall site.
Here's the third design. This is another Albany, New York location, at the old Mohawk Mall site in Niskayuna.
and here is the newest design. This is the newest store in Albany, off of Exit 6 of the Northway.
Target doesn't try the warehouse look that many other stores are going with these days. They try and make their stores different than everyone else. I admire that.
me too man....me too :D
Just wondering - is it me or is the second design missing a photo?
It might just be taking a while to laod. My pics are so big...I try to resize them, but, I can't help it
Actually, sorry dude. I must've accidentally deleted it, my fault. I fixed it though.

Here's an old Target store in 1965 !!
WOW:o dose that one still look like that and how come theres no logo on the frount of the store
I don't know about that store now, my guess is that it probably moved away beause the stores were smaller in that time... Maybe it was expanded? Today's Target would'nt fit in these 60's stores. As for the logo, it is probably behind all that snow !
Very cool pic! I have been searching for months looking for early Target pics finding nothing. That looks like quite a large store compared to other 60's stores.
That store looks farely big for a store in that time period!!
i loke those designs up top theyer intresting
hears the new one that opend in my town MT Kissco New York the en is cool it has a pizza hut and a starbucks
Yeah, a new Target just opened near me in a huge new strip mall. It also has a Pizza Hut, and a photo center.
hi again barry from toledo to me personnally, target sems to be a larger verson of ames at least to me. i dont remember the sq.ft of ames 416 compared to the target i work at now 624 but both were built around same time 89-90. did not see big difference in hardlines but softlines and checkout were more spread to me at least my store looks like 1st pic. does anyone have a target greatland near them
they just built a new one by me, in Rockville, Maryland. i find that very silly because there are 2 more in neghiboring cities!!!!!!
The town of Newington cut down over an Acre of trees and old buildings to build a brand new Target store in 2003. But, it's a real nice store. The store is so clean compared to Wal-Mart across the street. Also, I'm looking to buy DVDs online, and target.com has them for less than walmart.com.
I've only been in Target once in my life, it was in Charelston, WV. It was a nice store, good atmosphere, and kept neat. I liked the layout and all, but the prices were a little on the high side. I would like to have a Target in my area thought. :D
As a few have allready mentioned above, I would be more than happy to pay a bit more to go to Target than to save money and shop at Wal-Mart....ALWAYS!!
hears a Target at the Palsildes Mall CRIA 1998 lol one levale above Home Depot

How ironic Target is what delt the final blow to Caldor after moving into this area
WELL WALMART MADE IT HARD FOR CALDOR TO SURVIVE TOO!
so its not all of Target's fault
I call Target the "Caldor copycat" because it reminds me of what Caldor used to be, unique yet simple
plus if you crop the Target logo at 2.3 in powerpoint and put it on the angle like the Caldor rainbow was you'll see some sort of resemblance!:o:o:o:o:o:o:holysh:
as illustrated below
my favorite store
TARGET IS MY FAVORITE STORE. MY CLOSEST TARGET IS IN CONCORD NH. TARGET FIRST CAME TO NEW ENGLAND IN July 1999, In NH it first opened in Salem NH, and COncord and the one in the Pheasant LAne MAll opened in OCtober 1999, and the one in Hooksett opened in MArch 2003, and the one in NAshua on Amherst st opened in July 2003, and the one in Bedford NH is opening in OCtober 2005. Other potential Targets are in KEene and Greenland NH. The one in South Portland MAine opened in OCtober 2001, I have been to it. I heard the one in Bangor opened in MArch 2004, but I have never been to that Target. I heard they will put ones in Biddeford and Augusta and Topsham.
TARGET IS MY FAV STORE, and tHEY ARE IN EXPANSION MODe. BIG TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THERE IS NO TARGET IN VERMONT.
TARGET IS EVEN EXPANDING AROUND BOSTON BIG TIME. LIKE I HEARD THEY MAY build on Washington st if MAcy's moves into Filene's or if that happens. I heard they replaced the Kmart in South bay center (I WENT TO THAT Kmarts closing sale 2 years ago and my dad and I where the only white people in that store). I heard they built one in REvere, I have been to the targets around Boston in Saugus, Everett (TARGET GREATLAND), (SAUGUS AND EVERETT ARE NEAR REVERE), WAtertown (That was a small one), SAlem (A small store), SOmerville (A small store), Woburn (TARGET GRETLAND), DAnvers (TARget GREATLAND).
I First went to a Target in early 1993, when my parents and I went on vacation to ORlando florida for february vacation, and I went to a TArget in Kissimmee.
I JUST LOVE TARGET. HAS THERE BEEN TALKS ABOUT ONE IN VERMONT YET??? I would bet if they try open there they would open in Burlington.
I have been to these target: NH: NAshua, NAshua, COncord, HOoksett, Salem; MA: DAnvers, SAugus, EVerett, Salem, Somerville, Watertown, Westboro, Worcester, MArlboro, HAdley, Holyoke, TAunton, Kingston; ME: South Portland; NY: SAratoga Springs; FL: Kissimee, NM (NEw mexico): 2 in alebequerque (I went to them in FEbruary 1995 when I vistied my now deseaced grandmother's friends).
This summer when I travel I will go to the ones in RI: WArwick, Smithfield; MA: NOrth attleboro, Plainville, Boston (DORchester), REvere, Leominster (It opens in July); CT: Enfield; NH: Bedford.
In ma I heard they are trying to put target in the berkshrie mall in LAnesboro where Ames was (GOOD IDEA: I WENT TO PITTSFIELD LAST YEAR AND WAL-mart was the only store there, I saw a building with PEtco, HOme goods and TJ MAXX and it looked like it was a Kmart, a vacant Bradlees) Abbington, North Dartmouth and one DAy I plan to visit the one in SEekonk MA.
Target hjas been expanding fast over the past 5 years i first went to one back in 1997 it reminded me a lot like Caldor the first Target to open near me was over in rockland county in the plassies mall NY witch was back in 1998 then in 2003 white planes got one and again in 2005 when my town finnaly got one itys not to big not to small there stores are just right they have a good out look they dont put up a fight with outher stores like Wal Mart dose and the dont open super targets evrey were too
hears a Target Grat Land Sign theres a Wal Mart rigtht down the rod from it but it dosentr seem to get much bizz then this target dose lol take that wal mart
The local Target Greatland near me opened in 1993. I remember being very small, reading the construction sign, and thinking to myself, "What is a Target? I don't think I have ever been to Target..." lol. Anyway, they're expanding it like crazy--it's already huge and is going to become a Super Target with groceries, apparently. I like the idea :) There is a regular Target stoe in my actual town that opened in 2002, amid TONS of excitement from locals :)

Target dose it if a reglur Wal Mart opens up they wanna show Wal Mart that there better and it works and they dosnt dom it alone they add outher stores in there like u see in that picture
If you ever go to the Abington Pa., it is really neat. Its two floors with a Pizza Hut/Taco Bell/KFC in the front and there is a special escolator for carts, one for up and one for down. Once you go to the second floor, you have to take the escolator or elevator back down. It is a really cool Target, opened in 2002. The building was a three floor mini mall before and before then a Sears. Sears 195?-1985, moved to Willow Grove. Atrium Mall 1985-2001, the mall closed because it was practicly empty. The TJ Maxx and Old Country Buffet moved out of the mall. Target took over the out of business Circuit City and the rest of the little stores.

Ya, i've been to that store, it is very unique compared to the other Targets. (One of my friends used to have a Jewlery store in that mall until it closed). I ended up just putting a cart on the escalator for fun even though I didn't need anything on the 2nd floor:insane:

I recently visited the (south) Nashua NH store. It was pretty much like a regular Target but i like the one-level store more because you have everything on the same floor. That store had a Pizza Hut Express, an elevator, escalators and escalador for carts. It was the first time i saw that.
The old Newburgh, New York Ames is has been demolished, and a Target is being built there.

This is the Newington Target. It opened in September 2003. It is an average size store. There is one near Westfarms in New-Britain that's a great land and is much bigger with more merchandise. This picture was probably taken when they were still working on it (august probably). It has a big food department, and has a Pizza Hut Express.
i nodiced how target has changed there style there becomeing more of a store they dont do the cheep look like walmart and they seem to get better as tiime gos on if they sold more lines of clouths and tools and had auto centers they could become the next Sears in a way

This new target concept is ok. I was tired of the old looks, the ones that opened 5 years ago. IT seemed this concept started SPring 2004 and onwards and will probably go till 2010 or so. I Bet the one in Topsham looks like this.
this target is in Boston (Dorchester near South Boston) in South Bay Center, is 128,000 square feet and replaced K-mart in March 2004. K-mart closed march 2003.

National chains closing stores to cut costsToys``R''Us eliminates 73Akron will lose Rolling Acres site; Target also exiting weak retail zoneBy Mary EthridgeBeacon Journal business writerToys``R''Us Inc. is closing 73 stores nationwide, including its longtime location on Romig Road in Akron.
It is also converting 12 Toys``R''Us stores to its Babies``R''Us format, according to a news release issued by the New Jersey-based company.
This most recent attempt to streamline operations at the chain retailer marks the latest blow to Akron's struggling Rolling Acres retail corridor.
Last month, Target Corp. said it was closing its store in the Rolling Acres Mall, bringing the shopping center's occupancy rate well below 50 percent.
The Toys``R''Us closings will be completed in the spring after inventory liquidation sales, said company spokeswoman Kelly Cullen. About 3,000 jobs nationwide are being eliminated, with about 50 of those jobs at the Romig Road store. Some laid-off employees will be offered jobs at other stores. Those not offered jobs will be given severance pay, she said.
Toys``R''Us will continue to operate three stores in the Akron-Canton region -- on Howe Avenue in the Chapel Hill area of Akron; on Springside Drive in the Montrose area of Copley Township; and on Whipple Avenue Northwest in the Belden Village area of Jackson Township.
Dave Lietz, economic development manager for the city of Akron, said the closing of Toys``R''Us puts a key piece of Rolling Acres real estate into play.
City officials have made no secret of their desire to shift the area's economic mix to include more light industrial and office tenants. To that end, he said, the city is willing to consider proposals for nonretail use of that property and other Romig Road sites.
The Rolling Acres corridor has been moving slowly to more wholesale and office/industrial use. For instance, Regency Inc., an office supply distributor, moved into the former Ames building on Romig Road earlier in the year.
Rolling Acres Mall, the two-story shopping centerpiece on Romig Road, has been for sale for months. Broker Jennifer Fernandez of NAI Cummins said she has received a lot of interest from developers who want to change the mall to a mixed-use facility. Negotiations with a potential buyer are still under way, she said, although she declined to give details.
The mall's sale has been complicated by multiple ownerships. Smaller stores inside the mall are owned by the Whichard family of North Carolina, but four of the five anchor stores have other owners.
Last month, Target Corp. said it would shut down its store at Rolling Acres Mall at the end of February, and open a new store six miles away, in Wadsworth, the next day. That may give any potential buyer of the mall more flexibility in shaping the future of the facility.
This week's announcement of store closings by Toys``R''Us did not come as much of a surprise to industry watchers. The chain has long been in a fierce price war with Wal-Mart Stores Inc.
In March last year, Toys``R''Us was purchased by two private equity firms, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. and Bain Capital, along with Vornado Realty Trust of New York. At the time, analysts predicted the chain would close more than 100 of its 950 stores.

There is a multi level Target store in Stamford, CT. It consists of two floors on top of a four story garage in the center of downtown. It's a pretty cool store, although it is VERY SMALL compared to many other Target stores and parking costs $1.00 for the first two hours. Nevertheless, it's worth a visit.

OOO it did, as far as I know target took over caldors in saugus mass, some place in new jersey and there: there may be a few others that TArget took over caldors.
well Kohl's did take over at least 32 in 2000. most of those areas had another discount store within 5 miles away and Kohl's wanted to set foot in our region

my dad and I were not surprised either because hardly anyoen was in their stores even around vetrans day and 6 weeks after my mom said I do not think bradlees will be around much longer, the news came of bradlees going out. they were getting bad at the stuff they specialized in: housewears.
now back to TArget. TArget is thriving now and I like target better than wal-mart they have higher quality stuff
which target design do you like beter, the new or old ones.

I live in Newington and know of the New Britain Target. It's not exactly a regular Target and not a Super Target. It is much bigger than a regular Target with much more selection and variety. I find more when I go there than the Newington store.

The Greatland stores tend to have more clothes, and a larger pantry area, but that is pretty much it. Stuff is a little less cramped compared to a regular Target.
I think the purpose of these stores was to built so they could be converted to a SuperTarget (because both Stores are about the same size, have the double entrances and all) one day. (The two Greatland stores near me also have a Giant (PA) supermarket in the same center.

Yes, the Target store in Milford, CT does have an indoor mall entrance. It's kinda cool...You don't see many discount stores like Target and Wal-mart as anchors to indoor malls. They did a nice job constructing that end of the mall..As far as I know, there is a sports store, book store, and a megaplex theatre.

did target replace the caldor? The malls they are in are: pheasant lane mall in nashua, independence mall in kingston mass, hudson valley mall in kingston mass, crystal run mall in middletown, poughkeepsie galleria, eastview mall in Victor NY, Berkshire mall in mass, Liberty Tree mall in DAnvers, watertown mall (it is a smaller mall), HOlyoke mall, pyramid mall in ithaca, palisades mall, enfield square mall, Ct post mall, Aviation mall in queensbury, rumors of one in the champlain center in plattsburgh and other malls in the US. I wonder if they will come in the overlapping malls in the sears merger.
how come some areas have a target a few miles apart: Latham and Northway mall in NY and Palisades mall and Spring Valley New york and Orange and Milford Ct
I love the new target look.

Earlier this week, the girlfriend and I visited Target in Bethel (or Danbury) where they recently built a brand new Target. Since my birthday is coming up, I told her I wanted a Target hand basket since I love the store so much and she coerced me to take one! I don't know if I should feel ashamed or what but we had fun at the store that day! Here it is on my bed...
That Maine target is nice, I guess this is the new look for them. More department store-like than big box.
And XISMZERO, I don't think it was appropriate to take that basket. I can understand (and would likely do the same) if it was around an abandoned store, but Target will eventually have to pay to replace it, and they are surprisingly expensive. Just my opinion.

well i dont see anything rong wit it we wanna take old signs carts ect from Caldr Bradlees ames ect thats bacley the same thing people reused he carts

Totally different. Old signs and carts lying around an empty store is different. If there is an Ames cart floating outside an empty Ames store, obviously it is now considered as "litter" (especially since the liquidation company never took hold of it), same thing with a sign. It isn't going to be missed on an empty store.
If a cart obviously belongs to a store (like an ames cart with the name scribbled out in the parking lot of "big lots", it shouldn't be taken either. Usually if you talk to a manager or someone and offer them 30 bucks and explain your story they'll give it to you)
But do you think it is okay to go into an operating Target/Kmart/Walmart and drag out a clothes rack, a mannequin, or a box of hangers? Hey, how about a TV or some cookware while you're at it? I think not.
Preservation of the past is one thing, stealing is another.
Sorry for my long rant, but I just don't want to see anyone getting into trouble.
This is the Target in the Berkshire Mall in Lanesboro (MA) - it replaces the former Hills/Ames building at the end of the mall.
Target maintained a mall entrance (sort of) - they have a small doorway that you can use to get into the store from the mall, but there are no checkouts there - you have to checkout then walk back through the store to go back into the mall. Hills and Ames always had checkouts at both the mall and exterior entrances. In addition, the outside entrance to Target is at the far end of the building, whereas the former entrance was much closer to the mall entrance.

here is more of the target in berkshire mall. I went there last wbeek and there is an entrance to the mall. The indoor entrance only has the target logo, I w*ould have photographed that, but I feared a merchant would have called mall security since photographing that would be taking pictures inside.

Yes, there is an entrance to the mall - what I meant by the sort of in parenthesis is that it is much more inconvenient, having to check out then walk back across the store to the mall, rather than having registers right there (as the previous stores, Hills, then Ames did). The only other Target I know of in a mall (Kingston) solved this by building the outside entrance in the corner connected to the mall - thus the two entrances meet in the area where you pick up a cart just outside the registers.
Using your picture of the Berkshire store, you can see the mall entry on the left side - the Hills/Ames exterior doors would have been between the lower, lighter brown portion of the building that sticks out on the left and the light pole in the middle of the picture - much closer to the mall entrance.
The Keene store is different (especially the tower with the sign) - but part of the design also goes back to an older style with the arch over the entrance doors.
I just saw the new Target in Keene myself. It's good to know there's a Target down the road to stick it right to Wal-Mart. Since my girlfriend goes to college in Rindge, it's only 25 minutes away and a nice alternative than the two Wal-Marts in the area. I know I'll be directing my money towards Target now instead of venturing 45 minutes to get the nearest one in Nashua! I also noticed the neon half-target symbols which remind me of good old Caldor and their rainbows.

Actually, there is an entrance from the mall - the old Kmart was divided into Best Buy & Dicks - between the two runs a hall to access both, and then it continues, turns a corner and winds up at Target.

Here's a new Target store in Trumbull, Connecticut in Hawley Lane Mall on the Stratford border. This Target is unique with a parking garage and located inside a quasi-outdoor mall. This store is located right off Rt. 8 near Bridgeport and Stratford.
Here's the parking garage entrance sign.
Here's a Target clearance sign.
Elevators can bring you up to the store's front.
This Target has a Pizza Hut Express as well as a Starbucks eating area at the front of the store.
Here's the inside of the store, looking typical of most Target stores.

I heard about this today. I was there yesterday during the day and actually did some reporting on something a tad different... Check it! http://thecaldorrainbow.blogspot.com/ (/plug)
Rumor Alert:
There's a rumor floating around Southington that Target will be building a store on Queen Street in 3 or 4 years. Where will they build it? My sources say they're gonna rip down that Chinese Restaurant (next to Randy's Pizza across from the Shaw's Plaza) and abandoned building that's behind it.
Just got a job at Target :)
That's cool man. Good luck to you.
thank you very much. I am greatly looking foward to it.

A newly-built Target in Waterbury, Connecticut. This store opened on October 7, 2006. The inside is typical of the current store layout, the outside features a neo-1960s artsy style.

Target is currently in the process of trying to get the approvals to build a store in Southington, Connecticut which is the town I live in. If they get the approvals it will be built on West Street (Route 229). It's gonna be located really close to the I-84 Exit 31 off ramp. I saw the Planning and Zoing Meeting on TV last night and they were talking about moving the off ramp a little bit so it lines up with Hart Street so they could put a traffic light up.
Here is the recently opened Target in the Steelyard Commons Development:
In their 2006 annual report they write that at year end, they had 1,488 stores.
The company expects that the total U.S. store countwill be at about 2000 in 2011.
In longer term, the company thinks that thepotential for profitable U.S. Target stores may be as many as 3000 or more.
That's expansion! Can't wait to see that. Meanwhile, i don't expect to see Kmart opening new stores...
I work for target and don't think they are going anywhere soon. They can be a bit pricey but when they get rid of items-they mark them down quickly and to 30-90% off until they get rid of them. I just hope they don't overexpand. Even Wal-Mart is scaling back their expansion plans. Target offers nicer goods at lower prices but sometimes things are slightly more than a Wal-Mart or KMart but many folks feel it is worth a few extra pennies to shop in a nicer, cleaner, friendlier store than Wal-Mart.

I like Target. Mostly because the stores are bright, clean and not too large. It's easy to get around the store and find what you want. Prices are often good compared to competitiors. I also like the service and the fact that the stores are usually less crowded than Wal-Mart.

I LOVE TARGET A LOT A LOT TOO. its trendy and they get customers through faster than Wal-mart. They are also a good place to work for. I worked at the one in Concord last fall!!! it was nice and fun and friendly service!!! they are also ones who are hesitant to fire people (this year I had 2 jobs that will threaten to fire you in the 2nd or 3rd day).
I am still mad there is not one in Vermont.
TARGET COMING TO PLATTSBURGH
A ceremonial groundbreaking was held Wednesday for a new store in the town of Plattsburgh. The former Ames department store will soon be knocked down to make room for a new 126,000 square foot Target department store.
Officials of the Champlain Center mall said they have pursued the jewel of big box stores for some time and Target is now ready to move here.

That Target looks just like the one in Plainfield, IN, except it doesn't have a pharmacy. It opened in April 1996 when I was in kindergarten. (The PetSmart that is attached opened in September 1996, and the shopping center that was attached to THAT opened in late 1999 with the Kohl's across the parking lot.) It reminds me of the former Target that turned into Old Time Pottery in Greenwood, IN. I hope they NEVER do ANYTHING to the Plainfield location! Brings back memories...

Target's profit tumbles
Retailer says weak economy hurt its retail and credit card segments.
By Ben Rooney, CNNMoney.com staff writer
Last Updated: November 17, 2008: 1:17 PM ET
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Target Corp. reported a nearly 24% decline in third-quarter net income Monday as the weak economy continues to weigh on consumer spending.
The Minneapolis-based retailer reported net income in the three months ended Nov. 1 of $369 million, down 23.6% from earnings of $483 million a year earlier.
Earnings per share fell nearly 14% to 49 cents from 56 cents in the same quarter a year ago.
Revenue in the quarter rose 1.7% to $14.59 billion as new-store expansion helped offset declining same-store sales.
Analysts had expected Target (TGT, Fortune 500) to report earnings of 49 cents per share on revenue of $15.24 billion, according to a survey by Briefing.com.
"Our third-quarter financial results reflect the significant macroeconomic challenges facing our retail and credit card segments," said Gregg Steinhafel, Target's president and chief executive, in a statement.
Same-store sales, or sales at stores open at least a year, declined 3.3% in the quarter.
Profit from Target's credit card segment declined 83% to $35 million from $202 million last year.
Looking ahead, Target said the outlook for profit growth was difficult to gauge since same-store sales growth has been volatile this year.
However, fourth-quarter profit could vary between 90 cents per share to $1 per share if same-store sales decline in the "mid-single digit" percentage range, according to Doug Scovanner, Target's chief financial officer. Wall Street analysts are expecting fourth-quarter earnings of $1.22 per share.
Target has struggled to compete with Wal-Mart Stores (WMT, Fortune 500), the world's largest retailer, as wary consumers shy away from discretionary purchases amid rising unemployment and the weak economy.
"Right now the consumer is more than hesitant," Steinhafel said. "We, like other retailers, suffer from an inability to motivate consumers to come into our stores."
The results come ahead of the all-important holiday sales period which can account for half of the retail industry's profit for the year.
Steinhafel said he expects holiday season competition to be "equally, if not more, aggressive" from previous years due to a "slightly higher sense of desperation by some of the other retailers."
That said, he expects Target to meet Wal-Mart's prices "on all like and identical items."
Meanwhile, the company also said it has temporarily suspended share buyback programs and will limit capital spending. In the third quarter, Target repurchased about 2.5 million shares of its common stock at approximately $55 a share.
"The current environment and our financial outlook have naturally reduced our appetite for investment in our business," Scovanner said in a statement. He added that the company has reduced planned capital expenditures for next year by $1 billion.
"Overall, we believe these related decisions will help to protect our liquidity and strong debt ratings as we continue to operate in a very challenging retail and credit environment," Scovanner said.
Target's financial results came after the government reported last week that retail sales in October suffered their worst decline on record.

What the first Target in Rosevill Minnesota looked like! Also from their Website
I like Target it's nice and clean inside, plus there's something special about the way it is laid out. They've created the layout as such so you could see all the way to the back. This is accomplished by reducing the height of shelves so they don't block the ceiling. This creates an optical illusion of a lighted ceiling that seems endless. It makes the store look larger. It reminds me of Caldor which also used to do this on their later stores. I just like seeing a seemingly continuous lighted ceiling when you walk right in. :yup:
Maybe I'm odd but I like things like that.
I also like the fact they got a cafe' inside it's very convenient and the food is good. Pretty cool store.

QuoteTarget to Cut 9% of Headquarters Jobs, Shut Distribution Center
Jan. 27 (Bloomberg) -- Target Corp., the second-biggest U.S. discount retailer, plans to eliminate 9 percent of the jobs at its headquarters and close a distribution center to reduce costs in the shrinking economy.
The company will slash 600 existing jobs and 400 open positions, mainly in its hometown of Minneapolis. It will also close its Little Rock, Arkansas, distribution center, which employs 500, later this year, Target said today in a statement.

Actually, there are only five Targets in this entire state. Each in the only five larger cities in the state than the one I live in. But I've been to one of them, I liked it from what I can remember.

It used to be a "mini-mall" of sorts, but was pretty much dying after the early 90's when Sears moved to a new mega-mall a few miles away. The Target is fairly new, opening around 2002 I would say. One of my relatives used to have a jewlery store in this mall. Target is the only "interior" store left taking up the entire 2nd and (3rd?) floor of the former mall. There are some other stores on the first level but they all have outside entrances.
I've been to this Target and besides the cool cart esclator, I was not impressed. This store is in a lower-middle class area and doesn't seem to be well maintained or stocked. It is never real busy either whenever I visit (There is a new Walmart supercenter a few miles away, and an older Kmart down the street).

nice looking target
It does look cool, looks exactly like the Torrington one from what I could tell. Those balls are interesting, and heavy. I wonder what they are for still, decoration? to prevent people from driving onto the sidewalk? what?
Anyway all their stores look like they were built in the future.:D:cool:
That's also what the Turnersville, NJ store looks like, as well as several other ones in my area. Target has renovated a LOT of their stores to this new look already.

QuoteTarget's profit falls 41 percent amid downturn
MINNEAPOLIS - Target Corp. says its fourth-quarter profit fell 41 percent as consumer spending suffered amid high unemployment and other economic woes.
The discount retailer earned $609 million, or 81 cents per share, in the quarter ended Jan. 31. That compares to $1.03 billion, or $1.23 per share, a year earlier.
Revenue in the quarter fell 1.6 percent to $19.02 billion.

QuoteTarget revamps its Target brand as "up & up"

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Target Corp (TGT.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) is looking to make its namesake store brand a hit with consumers by giving it a new name and getting rid of the familiar bull's-eye on the package.
The Target brand line, which includes sunscreen, tissues and diapers, will now be more easily recognized across store aisles with packaging marked with a big, colorful arrow on a white background that says "up & up" -- the brand's new name.
"We believe that it will stand out on the shelf, and it is so distinctive that we'll get new guests that will want to try it that maybe didn't even notice the Target brand before," said Kathee Tesija, executive vice president of merchandising for Target, in an interview.
http://www.reuters.com/article/ousiv/idUSTRE54I6UK20090519
I'm not so happy about that, I liked the Target brand better with the bullseye logo. All these arrows on the shelves will mess up the "clean look" of the stores.
I think it looks cheap but could have been a good idea for a specific baby brand only (growing up). Now it looks like: Prices from $3 and up & up.

So consumers shopping in a "Target" store will no longer be able to find the store branded bullseye products. Well I guess we'll have to sit back and see how long this one last.
This is moronic. Target's signature logo is not an arrow with "up&up" on it; it is a bullseye. They can't use both. What does "up & up" mean, anyway?
EDIT: 400th post!
target in millbury turned down a delvery of market pantry cookie sandwiches last week and my cousion got like 10 boxes out of it any idear why target is turneing down items

I hate it, I miss the bullseye logo, all these arrows on the shelves are ruining the look of the stores. And when a product is upside down, it looks like this "Down & Down".
So the Target Greatland in NE Philly on roosevelt blvd and haldeman, now just says "Target" I guess any target greatlands that are still out there will just be targets now.
When did Target Greatland start? Was it an 80's thing?
The company started working on the concept in 1988 or 1989. The first store to open with the Greatland signage was in 1990.
I've been to the one in Woburn, MA. It's a huge store with the expanded food category.
The new mall Target (former John Wanamaker/Strawbridge's) opens October 11. The existing Springfield Target (former Strawbridge & Clothier) has a grand reopening October 18.
Yea it seems like to me they are redoing every target's food section. Last month the did one near me that opened in march, and now they are doing the one on haldemen (that I said just dropped the greatland part of the name) all teh freezers are blocked off and says a tastier target is on the way.
Yeah, it's called the PFresh concept. Basically, they are enlarging the food section, along with adding "fresh" meat and produce selections. However without the actual meat and produce departments in the regular Target stores, we'll see how this one will go.

The store near me recently did this...it's kind of silly if you ask me. First, they moved all the departments around, cutting back many to make room for isles and isles of fridges and freezers. The past few times I have been in this Target, the food section is pretty quiet. The prices are good (especially compared to Genuardi's, also in the same center), but I didn't see anyone buying large amounts of groceries. There are too many grocery stores around me (and a Super Walmart opening next month) to make this seem like a viable concept...it's not like I'm going to buy some prepackaged meat or produce..I'll go to the supermarket for that stuff.
This is making me want to drive all the way to Greensburg to look at Target....lol and I usually don't go in there. Not too many bargains with Walmart supercenter right up the road. Oh yeah, I moved back to Latrobe on Saturday...
Well, it'll be good for all the people who want a little taste of what a Super Target has to offer, of course on a much smaller scale. I think this could go both ways. Most people don't do all their food shopping at Target from what I know and this maybe could bring in more food oriented consumers. However, because of that fact, people might not notice the change, at least for the time being.

I like the idea :) There is a regular Target stoe in my actual town that opened in 2002, amid TONS of excitement from locals :)
Where is that Target?
A new 2 floor Target opened this past Sunday, October 11, in Springfield, Pa, at the Springfield Mall. This new Target has the expanded Food section that's being added to almost all the Philadelphia area Target stores.
This new Target was built on the site of a former John Wanamaker/Hecht's/strawbridge's Department Store that closed whem Macy's took over May Department Store. Macy's already has a store in the Springfield Mall that opened as Bamberger's Department Store.
Target opened 26 new Stores, including one in Lowell Mass near Chuck E Cheese and Hanover Mass.
WHEN WILL THEY OPEN ONE IN VERMONT!!!???
Will they ever have one around Lewiston / Auburn Maine? why is it that that is the last place chains in Maine enter?
and will they ever have one in Tilton NH or Seabrook NH?
why do they NEED two Targets near each other in Springfield PA? I saw the two near each other (The one in the mall was not open yet when I went in August)

I think that the Seabrook store is approved. Lewiston/Auburn has to be a market for Target, but is there a new Walmart coming to Lewiston? If that happens, Target would be too late to grab that area.
Tilton would be nice, or maybe Laconia/Gilford where a new Target store would easily win against the old and small Walmart. vermont, I don't know, is there a law to force retailers to use existing space or something like that?
The deal with Vermont is basically that everywhere(most notably Rutland) Target wanted to go, the town wanted them to go into an existing building, and Target didn't want to go for that, so basically they have not bothered to open up there. That's basically what I've gathered as the reason why.

If they decide to look in the Rutland, VT area again there is the empty Hannaford location that sits between the route 4 business route and the route 4 bypass.
I remember when Target first moved into NH, they utilized the former Lechmere buildings in South Nashua at the Pheasant Lane Mall and the free standing location that was torn down and rebuilt in Salem, NH on route 28.

All the Targets in my area have now added the fresh foods departments. They do look nice, but I think they take up too much room. The other departments are now smaller in size. And in renovating, they also removed those cool neon lights from the walls.

I miss the old neon lights and classic early 90's decor. Their new carts look cheap. On top of that, the old-school "Pizza Hut Express" sign at my Target is gone. I think the Target Greatland stores have been completely phased out by now. Never figured out what a "greatland" is though. I hope the first Greatland I ever saw, in Maryland, is still there. They just closed Taco Bell that the Greatlands had too.
Target Greatlands just had an expanded selection of merchandise. That's about it from what I know.

Yes, not unlike "Big Kmart" was supposed to. I still wonder what the name means. That the stores are bigger and take up more land? They had a nice logo though.
I think Target had stores (all Greatland) in Delaware and Maryland before PA. The Philadelphia Inquirer just did a big story on the new Targets. On their "Philadelphia area" map of Target stores, MD and DE were excluded. Bradlees might have entered New Jersey before PA too.
I have an idea: instead of overdoing the Supercenters, Wal-Mart should build Neighborhood Markets (with food) in this area to compete with Target.
The only Greatlands near me were located in in Mount Laurel, NJ and Cherry Hill, NJ. I think they have both been remodeled and are now just regular Targets.
What did earlier 80's Target interiors look like, such as the former Ayr-Way stores? Also did they build any new stores between about 1983 and the Richway acquisition?

Target Greatland stores were basically Super Targets, but without the grocery section. They also shared the same layout, with hardlines around the outer edges of the store, and softlines in the middle. This layout is also repeated in some smaller regular Targets as well.

Minneapolis-based Target Corp. takes on a Canadian retailer that's using the same name.
By JACKIE CROSBY, Star Tribune
Last update: October 15, 2010 - 9:31 PM
A tiny Canadian retailer has drawn a bead on the bullseye company.
Target Corp. is fighting Toronto fashion merchant Isaac Benitah, who is opening his own Target stores at a time when the Minneapolis-based retailer is making plans to expand into Canada.
The American retailer was scheduled to make its case before the trademark office on Friday, according to the Globe and Mail newspaper in Toronto.
Benitah claims that he has owned the rights to the Target name in Canada for nearly a decade, the newspaper reported. He recently opened a Target Apparel in Nanaimo, British Columbia, using the same red, sans-serif style lettering. Another store is scheduled to follow soon in Sudbury, Ontario.
Benitah has said that he plans to open at least a dozen supersized Target Apparel stores across the "Great White North'' in the next couple of years.
Observers say resolution of the case could take years, and that the conflict makes Target Corp.'s entrance into Canada more difficult -- and perhaps impossible. Target already is on the hunt for possible sites in Canada. Target said it hopes to open stores there by mid-decade. .

So this will be Target Corporation's first official venture outside the U.S. (the Australian Target stores are owned by Wesfarmers).
So far reactions are positive. Many people know the Target chain in Canada so they are really looking foward to shop Target in Canada.
Zellers has been declining for quite some time and they are on the defensive against Walmart. Many stores are cluttered, too small, and the chain has been poorly trying to copy the Target concept. Target will certainly do better with their own strategy and money to improve the shopping experience.

Of course not everyone can be happy. Zellers employees will go through the transition, some will lose their job in stores not picked up by Target.
Some say "we should buy Canadian". But Zellers was owned by HBC which was owned by an American. Also, even if Zellers was a canadian chain, merchandise, (like at other retailers) is obviously not all Made in Canada...
It's a bit sad for some to lose a canadian retail icon like Zellers, but we also lost Eaton's, and many others and life goes on. That the retail market. If Zellers was so great and profitable, it would have stayed in business on it's own.
Around me, people are happy to see that Target will be a great improvement over Zellers which was kind of lost with no clear strategy. Many stores are cluttered, with narrow aisles and don't have merchandise people want...
And of course Zellers was majority owned by W.T. Grant from 1959 until the latter went bankrupt in 1976.

Mixed response to CNBC's Target documentary from the employee ranks (BTW, The Break Room is a fantastic resource for getting an idea what it's like at Target from the inside.) Personally, I thought it was okay, but I wish it had gone into more depth with the Dayton Hudson era, and the interviews with Target execs were generally unenlightening, plus Becky Quick added nothing except eye candy. Laura Rowley came off best by far, but even she is a bit too worshipful for my tastes (not surprising, as her cousin is a designer and a client of Target.) As with most CNBC docs, it bears all the hallmarks of an authorized biography. No mention of the Golden Age of Lechmere: fail! :) Worth seeing anyway....

I read that Target Pfresh will be expanding to many more Target stores in CT. Has anyone been to Pfresh? Does it have fresh bakery items and fresh seafood? How does the produce selection compare to the one of supermarkets (such as Stop & Shop or Shoprite)?

I've been to one. It was not that impressive. There was a display with fruits, bananas, bread and such items. Maybe it was only a small scale Pfresh. It did not seem to draw a crowd.

The PFresh thing is a joke, IMO. A lot of the prices on edibles shot up (4 bucks for muffin mix, folks?), and what they added was nothing to brag about either (29 cents for ONE banana?...not a pound...ONE banana)

'Vibrant market'; Plans to open about 200 stores: CFO
By S. JOHN TILAK, Reuters April 7, 2011
U.S. retail giant Target Corp. expects to generate at least $6 billion in annual sales in Canada in as little as six years as it makes its first foray into a foreign market.
Chief financial officer Douglas Scovanner also said Wednesday the No. 2 U.S. retailer, which announced its entry into the Canadian market in January, now plans to open about 200 Canadian stores, expanding on earlier estimates.

Here is the original Target in Roseville Minnesota back in the 60's. It was replaced in 2005 for a current style Target
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v41/CorporateA/tyler/Target_Roseville_Minn_1960s.jpg)
If you're asking what it looked like in say, 2004, I'm not quite sure. Probably didn't keep the vintage logo to the end.
By the mid 1990's most Target's looked the same way they generally do today.
Vermont is very strict about what it allows to open in their state. To my knowledge still no Walmart in Vermont either. Only Kmart's.
Even then I believe Vermont only has three Kmart locations.
No, Vermont has Wal-Mart stores. Just no supercenters. There are locations in Burlington, Rutland, and Bennington, possibly others.
From what I've heard, Target wanted to put a store in Rutland back around 2004-05, but the city wanted them to go into a preexisting building downtown, and Target wanted to build their own building. They couldn't come to an agreement, so they never opened, and apparently that has soured Target's view of Vermont.
Oh Vermont does allow them now? I haven't lived there for over a decade
Actually it seems mostly to be what Amesman referred to with Target, in that Vermont prefers (where possible) to have retailers use existing buildings rather than build new. Of course, many of the chian prefer to build so that their stores have a similar set-up.
The Bennington WalMart is in a former 5&10 (I know it was mentioned before somewhere which one it was, but I forgot). The store is probably about 1/2 the size of most "regular" WalMart stores, but seems to work in the area (they also have a normal Kmart in town).
Another example - their Home Depot is actually a combined former Price Chopper and Ames side by side (with the garden area having been, I believe originally a drug store) - while the store is probably just as big as any Home Depot, it looks strange because the aisles are short (those stores not being as deep) but there are many more of them side to side (since using the two buildings together).
On the other hand, they allowed Price Chopper to build new (but they removed part of the plaza in the process so kind of a "substitution" of one large building for several smaller spaces), along with Aldi & CVS (this was vacant land prior). The Hannaford also appears to be a newer building. Possibly since at the time of those stores being built, nothing was available that would fit them?
Target has released a list of the first 105 stores to open in Canada in early 2013.
I'll be getting a store in my hometown! It will surely be a great improvement over Zellers.

Really not impressed with the whole PFresh concept. Seems to be more for a convenience factor as many items aren't all that competitive with either the local supermarkets or Walmart.

More stores were recently announced. The final number of picked up location to become Target stores could be from 125 to 135.
Target has also sold 39 Zellers sites to Walmart Canada.

I believe that Target dropped the Target Greatland concept. I have never seen a Super Target or Greatland and most new Target stores near me have been regular stores.
Zellers has been declining for years. They tried to copy Kmart, then Target but without success. Walmart Canada easily beats Zellers on all aspects. The company that owns Zellers probably wanted to sell while the company is still afloat rather than wait a couple years and loose more market share and maybe close stores or go bankrupt.
There are, or rather were, a number of Target Greatland outlets in metro Boston including Danvers, Framingham, Woburn and Everett. I believe all or most have converted to PFresh.
Target said it plans to close stores in Broomfield, Colo., Raleigh, N.C., Orlando and Portland by the end of its fiscal year in late January.
In each case, the company said the decision was made after careful consideration of the financial performance of the specific location and that all eligible store employees were offered the option to transfer to a nearby Target store. What’s interesting about the closures is that the stores aren’t all that old. The Broomfield and Raleigh locations opened in 1995 while the Portland store opened in 1996. The Orlando Super Target location on West Colonial Drive is roughly a decade old as it opened in 2001
That's not good... We already know Kmart is living on borrowed time, and now Target is struggling? It basically indicates that Walmart has "won", and really it's a matter of time before Walmart is the only place to go. Sad.
Their "cheap chic" reputation may have worn a bit thin of late, but Target is hardly on life support. Like many chain retailers, in good times Target misjudged economic growth and demographic trends in certain market areas that did not pan out as expected. In the case of Broomfield, they built a larger store one exit away, so the older location became redundant. Lowe's just adjusted its store portfolio for the same reasons. Target continues to enjoy the loyalty of a slightly upscale (relative to Walmart) customer base who wouldn't be caught dead in the Big Blue Box.

I think it's mostly a big brown and tan box these days. Anyways, while Target is closing redundant stores, Walmart is still in the process opening them, and I do of course mean markets where "supercenters" already exist, which I think a clear indication of their vastly different financial outlooks.

Target will franchise to outside pharmacists when it rolls out its Canadian stores, the inverse of its US business model
http://www.chainstoreage.com/article/target-use-pharmacy-franchise-model-its-stores-canada
It's really interesting to watch Target Canada's progress in opening here.
There is an official list of about 45 confirmed stores so far out of a possibility of up to 135. These current Zellers stores have apparently received their notice to liquidate and close.
So far our local Zellers, although picked by Target, is not yet confirmed... it may or may not become a Target.
What is it about the pharmacy business in Canada that would encourage Target to employ the franchise model as opposed to owning and operating the in-store pharmacies themselves?
Target settled the battle with a Canadian rival using the Target name.
QuoteCanadian gives up rights to Target banner
For about a decade, Canadian retail mall king Isaac Benitah tangled with U.S. discounter Target Corp. (TGT-N52.140.140.27%) over who owned the rights to the coveted Target name north of the border.
He had snapped up the name 11 years ago when he acquired a bankrupt domestic merchant amid signs that the U.S. discount giant would eventually land here.
Now, he is turning that purchase â€" and claims to the exclusive rights to the Target name here â€" into a victory. On Wednesday, he agreed to Target Corp.’s settlement to phase out his own Target stores and avoid a messy court battle in the process.

If the Target name is already taken in Canada, why don't they settle on an alternate name, like "Bullseye"? I heard of alternate names for oh-so-familiar businesses like Australia's "Burger King", which goes by the name "Hungry Jack's", or the UK's "T.J. Maxx", which goes by the name "T.K. Maxx".

I guess they could, but then they would have to spend a lot to market that new name, create new logos, ads, signs and everybody would know that they are Target anyway.
So they decided to fight back and they finally settled. It also looked like the Canadian company was doing it on purpose when it decided to suddenly expand and open many "Target Apparel" stores to prove their point...

Nice pics dmx! Neat to see a target that still has its original signage.
Two of the four Targets near me - Avon, OH and Elyria, OH - have the neon on the walls. Elyria still has the white signage, while Avon has the multicolored signage with the different typeface. I know that Amherst and North Olmsted, OH don't have the neon on the walls. I *think* they both have the multicolored signs for the various departments, but I could be wrong. Truth be told, I never really paid attention!
Only 230 stores (compared to nearly 400 last year) will be converted this year. The results they're getting are only meeting expectations and TGT is looking to reduce the cost of remodeling lower-volume stores.

I saw the Target Canada website and they have a very good timeline of Target's history, starting with the founding of Dayton's Department Stores in the 1900s and ending with their international expansion into Canada.
I don't really know why, but I like the Meriden, Connecticut Target better than the one in Southington.
With all this talk about Target expanding into Canada right now, we are all going to wonder what the future will hold for Target, another ten or twenty years from now. I predict an acquisition of Target Australia might be next, as well as an expansion into New Zealand, Mexico, and the UK.

Going back to Target Canada for a sec, if I could, my local Zellers is going to become a Target. Having been to two Targets in the in the US, I am excited. I like Zellers, but I gotta say, Target kicks Zellers' butt.
I also hope they'll bring along some cool US merchandise to Canada that we don't normally get here.
So Target is now done with their list: 127 stores for 2013.
It will be interesting to watch this arrival of Target, Zellers being closed and renovated.
Another aspect, the store sizes are not much like your average new U.S. Target stores. I think that most free-standing Target stores range from 120,000 to 130,000 sq.ft.
At least 32 Canadian locations will be under 100,000. 11 of these will be under 85,000 sq.ft. including our local store. They will have to fit the Target concept in smaller stores.
Our local store is 85,000 sq.ft but they could expand by at least 2,000 more with adjacent vacant stores. It's possible that the store will not have a Starbucks thus saving space. Not all Target will get one.

It's obvious that it won't happen. The cost of doing business is not the same in Canada, different regulations, higher taxes, higher minimum wages and so on.

In Quebec City, a store that is already 119,500 sq.ft. will be expanded by an extra 15,000 sq.ft.
In my hometown, the 85,000 sq.ft store can grow into at least 1,800 sq.ft. of adjacent vacant space.
Our local Target here in Avon, OH, is remodeling the store to fit in food. As far as I can tell, it's going to be mostly in the front left corner, where Electronics was on the old "neon" store layouts. They've got almost everything moved into the 'uniform' Target look, and the signs posted throughout the store promote only fresh produce, but do the "retail + food" Target stores also have stuff that Walmarts have (bakery, deli/meats, etc), or is this simply going to be "produce + the traditional multiple aisles of mostly non-refrigerated food"? They had grocery aisles in the front by the registers the entire time, so those will likely move to the new "food side" when the renovation gets there. They're not *expanding,* rather they're consolidating the retail portion to fit food in as well.

Usually a single aisle (although wider than normal) with a small selection of produce, meats and other fresh items, along with an expanded refrigerated and frozen section (a couple aisles at least, plus some on the outside wall) and a larger selection of packaged foods. No service counters.
I'm guessing your store entry is on the right side (based on your description of front left corner)?

I figured on no service counters, considering how everything was shaping up. Also, I got confused. It's "front right corner," not left. The old Guest Services counter is the new home of Starbucks, with the separate 'Cafe' operating where it always has been. Registers 1-4 are now "Guest Services: Returns and Inquiries," which seems like a bizarre step backwards from the secure way that returns used to be handled (walk in through a separate front entrance). You walk in, and the food area is going to be at the far right by the Pharmacy and possibly-still-there-although-I-never-see-it-open Portrait Studio. They renumbered the food aisles (the old automotive/home improvement section) with "G##," and they currently start at 18 and go to 35. There are mobile (temporary?) coolers on the back wall over there, which I'm guessing will be replaced with permanent coolers when the time comes.
Also, their new all-plastic carts are quite neat.
http://www.onmilwaukee.com/market/articles/newtargetcarts.html
new? They've had plastic carts for years now.
Oh I see that article was written in 2009, even before then id guess they had plastic carts.
Our local Target is slowly taking shape. I can't wait to see how they will they roll out their concept in a small 84,800 sq.ft. space...
The mall had available store space alongside the former Zellers (1,800 sq.ft.), yet Target did not take it...

Here's a time lapse video of a Canadian Target store materializing:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0EJ6jq5WJgo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0EJ6jq5WJgo)
Target's food side in the Avon, OH store is officially open, and, I must say, I wasn't that impressed. Maybe it's because it was the first day, but it seemed to be hyped up as being more than what it was. Where's my rotunda of fresh produce? Bananas for 24c each isn't "rotunda of fresh produce." Yes, there's some meat. Yes, there's SOME produce. Beyond that, it looks like the same food selection they HAD, but more of it.
I'll have to check back in a couple of weeks to see if it improves. I'll chalk the first week up to it being the grand opening. If it doesn't get any better, I wonder what the point was in even putting it in.

St.Georges, Quebec. Here is that store as of July 2013:

Store is almost ready, Starbucks is ready and a lot of fixtures are up inside the store already.
Note the french slogan. In Quebec there is a Language Law to protect French and when a company has an English name, they can use it when it's a trademark but they must use one of these four options:
-Translate their name
-Use both the original English name and the translated name
-Add a French description
-Add a French slogan
Frankly I think this is all useless but Target did it right to be a good neighbor in this new country.

According to information I found Target will be opening in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania sometime in 2014. It will be located on West Dekalb Pike in a plaza near Acme. It looks like there is a Bed, Bath Beyond and a Michael's in this plaza where Target is going. That's a change of plans for them. I know several years ago they were looking to build at the King of Prussia Mall, but I think that was before Walmart opened a SuperCenter near the mall.

Judging by the Facebook comments, people have these complaints:
-Target is higher priced than Walmart
-Target is higher priced than in the US
-There are empty shelves since the first openings in March
-Not enough plus size clothing
-Target does not sell yarn
-Target does not have all the same products and exclusive lines as in the US
-It's taking too long to open all stores
-It's just a renovated Zellers
Some say the stores smell funny or that there is too much red, lighting is too bright, mall entrances are poorly located, they should put on music in the stores, or that Zellers is missed and was better... ???

It only makes sense that Target's prices are higher in their Canadian Stores than here in their American stores. Remember that The Canadian $Dollar is worth less than The American $Dollar which results in everything being higher priced in Canada no matter what store or retailer that you shop in up in Canada.
Just look at gas prices and retail wages in Canada, they are higher and so are taxes, social costs and so on.
Canada's population is smaller than California but scattered in a country bigger than the United States. Distribution will be expensive.
There's also translating costs for the province of Quebec. Target has to have their systems operating in two languages and must translate every ad, document, flyer, signs and more throughout the company.
Target Canada will open their first Quebec stores on September 17th, more on October 19th.
I can't wait to see if the Target concept does not get lots in translation.

So... I have visited our local Target store this evening. In one phrase: "It looks and feels like a US Target store"
The layout is the same, colors, bathrooms, Target brands, price tags, sale signs, electronics, baby, all very similar or the same as US stores.
Some prices are higher than in the US, some items have the same prices, most items are comparable to what you see at other retailers.
Some shelves were empty here and there, but overall the store was at least 95% full.

It's tiny, but to be fair there is one more aisle on the left not seen in the picture.
I think they dd what they could with the smaller, odd-sized store. 85,000 sq.ft. with one corner of the store that has a 45° angle (similar to the JCPenney in Nashua), and the store has two entrances (one in the front and one for the Mall).
They did keep the wide aisles. Maybe they could have saved some space there but not that much. They kept the Starbucks as small as possible, tucked in a corner right by the entrance.
Target used to have McGlynn Bakery stores back in the store's early days before they had Starbucks Coffee shops. Food Avenue/Food Express stores were also found in most of Target's earlier locations, long before they were (mostly) replaced by Pizza Hut Express or Taco Bell Express. In the Target Greatland stores, their snack bar has the Food Avenue menu alongside a Pizza Hut (or Taco Bell) Express menu and Starbucks Coffee menu.
People on Facebook kept complaining about empty shelves at the stores opened during Spring and Summer.
Our local store has opened on September 17th, almost all shelves were full except around 5% empty spots here and there. I thought they had fixed these issues.
However, 3 weeks after the opening it's painful to watch. The store is full of empty shelves, especially in grocery, households and health & beauty products. Sale items ran out after a day or two and were not replenished. Regular priced items slowly vanished and were not replenished!
The Market Pantry brand appears to be successful but not a single item that has run out has been replenished in 3 weeks! Unbelievable. I have visited the store four times and saw products go away and today that shelf is simply empty and has sat empty for days. Target will open 9 more stores in 10 days, they need to fix their supply chain fast, customers appear willing to buy but will be walking away....

Does anyone think Target in Meriden, Connecticut should move across the street into The Westfield Meriden Square Mall in the JCP spot once they close in May? Although that will mean yet another giant sized empty building in Meriden, I think this would help the mall. Westfield already has a Target at their mall in Trumbull. Plus if they took over the JCP spot that would give them a bigger store in Meriden. Their current store is kind of on the small side. Several malls have Targets in them such as Westfield Trumbull Shopping Park, Enfield Square Mall, Holyoke Mall in Holyoke, Mass.
Isn't Target a bad fit for Canadian shopping centers? I always have thought of Target as being an "urban" retailer, and it is a company that traditionally has avoided even the most slightly rural smaller towns. I admit I don't know too much about Canada but my understanding is that their culture is much more rural than urban, in both Quebec and the English-speaking regions, so Target just doesn't seem to belong except perhaps in the biggest cities. Walmart is much more rural-oriented (after all it started in Arkansas) and seems to be perfect for Canada for this reason. Kmart also is very rural-friendly, not surprising because while it started in Detroit, it evolved from Kresge, which along with Woolworth was able to fit into both urban main streets and in small towns.

Kmart had their chance in Canada and they failed. Kmart Canada called it quits in 1998, their CEO at the time became CEO of Zellers and most of their stores were picked up by Zellers. Most of the Zellers stores are now Target, except for a few which became Walmart and other retailers.
"It's aboot time for Target Canada to step up their game, eh?"
If Target fails in Canada, who else is left to buy the former stores up there? Kohl's? Being from Wisconsin maybe they should try the market. Meijer also might be a good idea.

On another topic, would anyone here happen to know what became of the Target featured throughout the 1991 movie "Career Opportunities"? I know it was a former Richway in the Atlanta GA area, which would have been converted to Target in the late 80's. But I don't know what town this store actually was in. Target relocated a number of their former Richway stores to new-build Target Greatland stores fairly early, around 1995, and I know a few of the obsolete stores became Value City at that point. But that chain (except for Value City Furniture or are they gone now too?) went out of business several years back.
Also could someone please help me find pictures of the former Richway/Target stores in their Value City years, and pictures of the early-mid 90's Target Greatland stores when they were new?
I remember when Career Opportunities came out. Discount Store News had a cover story
glowing about what a wonderful thing it was going to be for the discount retail industry.
Turns out all it did was reinforce the idea of how much it can suck to work for one.
Obviously no one at DSN had read the script.

That's a big news. !!
Steinhafel, a 35-year Target employee, had been working to regain customers’ loyalty after hackers stole card data and personal information at the height of the Christmas season last year. The company already replaced its top technology executive in the wake of the breach. The retailer’s Canadian expansion also has struggled to gain a foothold, weighing on profit.

Today, I went inside the Target that is located behind the northwest corner of Southland Center in Taylor, Michigan. It originally opened in 1987 as one of Metro Detroit's original six Target stores and was remodeled to add a PFresh section in early 2013. Unsurprisingly enough, it's located almost directly across from the mall's Macy's anchor, which was originally Hudson's and later Marshall Field's-Hudson's, Marshall Field's and Target were all once owned by the same parent company!

They're so broke after they leave the casino, they can't spend any money anywhere else...
Seriously though, it's amazing how the casino was viewed as the saving grace for that area, and it doesn't seem like it's been that helpful in turning the area around.
And I'm not surprised to see that Springfield's closing. Both of their Kmarts are gone (I didn't realize they had 2!), why not Target too?

They could open there, but like I said, they probably would have to open a smaller prototype in Vermont, for a place like Burlington, maybe a store that is less than 60,000 square feet. It would sell 70% of what a normal Target store would carry, if one (or two) were to be built.
I would guess some of the issue is there either not being buildings available or them not wanting to use those that are.
Vermont has some fairly strong laws that force retailers to reuse existing buildings/sites where possible - just look at the Walmart and Home Depot in Bennington for an example (Walmart being a former 5&10, Home Depot combining an old Price Chopper and the Ames into one store which is similar in size to a normal Home Depot but a different shape, wide and shallow rather than narrow and deep).
Target's pharmacies were acquired by CVS last June...they are being re-branded...

It just depends on their flexibility - if Walmart can do it no reason Target can't.
Target has been flexible to some degree (with smaller locations and two floor stores in places as well).
One possibility lies in Kmart - if they keep closing stores that could offer Target an opening to take those spots over (and once in, to get approval to expand, as Walmart did with their Bennington location).
I think they could open in that Kmart spot, its logical! for 15 yrs I have wondered When is Target coming to Vermont? vermont was the last state to Get a Walmart.

Target Australia has something called Target Country (originally known as Fossey's). I believe it is Target Australia's attempt at a rural discount store similar to the American Shopko Hometown stores, as well as the now-defunct American rural retailers Pamida, Duckwall-ALCO, PM Place/Place's, Fischer's Big Wheel and Gibson's.
I went to the Taylor, MI location today and noticed a strip of translucent wall high above the corridor in front of the checkouts and then I noticed that behind one of the panels of the translucent wall was an office of some sort. Do any other Targets have upstairs offices?

Yes, the Target store in Appleton, Wisconsin's Fox River Mall has that. I believe most locations built in the 1980s have that.

I think the crux of doing that was for Target to outsource their pharmacy operations - an audit nightmare - to CVS. CVS inherits the customer base, and Target frees themselves up to just sell HBA supplies without needing to concern themselves with prescriptions.
I just wonder how long the overlapping stores - CVS/Targets with a standalone CVS nearby - are going to last. Surely, one's going to have to give, right?

I think the free-standing locations might close.
In my area, there's a mall with two Payless ShoeSource stores, one inside the Shopko store anchoring the mall, as well as a storefront in the mall itself.
They could possibly coexist if the CVS is within a one-block radius of said Target location.

I'd suspect that the ones in the Target stores would stay for at least some period of time (probably something they required in the contract to sell) since Target wants the benefit of those picking up prescriptions walking through the store and (hopefully) buying other items on the way.
Of course, there's also the thought that CVS (and the others) have been moving to free standing stores to provide the option of drive up pick up, which they can't easily do in the Target locations, so that would be a good reason to keep their own stores open as well.
So, it seems that, at least for some time, they may very well all stay open.

Target is an okay store. Sometimes their store in Southington will have a book my Mom or I are looking for that they didn't have at Walmart. The Pizza Hut stuff the have at their snack bar is pretty god.
What I don't like about them:
1. They don't have clothing for larger people. At one time I was 360 pounds and wore size 48 jeans/pants. They never had that size. (I'm 270ish and size 40 now). Depending one the style I wear shirts that are either 3X or 4X. Again they don't have those sizes.
2. They don't sells Men's footwear.
3. They don't play music in their stores.
4. I'm on their Do-Not-Hire list even though I've never been employed by them. A friend of mine who once worked there says it's probably because I've worked for 2 Union companies - Shaw's (2001-2006) and most recently Stop & Shop (2015-2016)

Sadly I think you are absolutely correct there. Non-union retail companies live in mortal quaking fear of hiring potential organizers. It was a major topic when I was in management at Ames. We were discouraged from hiring anyone who had worked at Fisher Big Wheel or A&P, both unionized stores in town.
Target is even more paranoid. They actually banned the Salvation Army bucket from their stores rather than risk a lawsuit by union organizers for the same level of access.

I have been to one of these target express locations and I personally liked the one I was in a lot, It had a small electronics section, a pharmacy, and fresh food in the grocery section despite not being that much bigger in size than a dollar general. Every time I make a trip to dollar general I have to make a second trip to the grocery store a few days later anyway to get something I need but dollar general doesn't carry where as I didn't feel like that when I went to target express. Aside from purchasing clothing I think I could live off of only shopping at a target express I couldn't say that about dollar general.

Huh, I thought Vermont would already have at least one location...I mean Killingly has one, and it only severs 50k in the area.
It's not the size of the areas (towns and population) in the state, but that Vermont has some unusual rules. One of which prevents stores from building newer buildings if there is a way to reuse ones that exist.
For instance, Bennington (in the SW corner of the state) has a Walmart in an old 5 an 10 which was for many years about 1/2 (or less) the size of a standard (not Supercenter) store. They did finally get permission to expand it, but even then the expanded spot would be closer to the size of an original store than a Supercenter.
Also there is a Home Depot which takes up a former Ames AND a former Price Chopper supermarket next to it. It makes for a store that is probably fairly close in size to a standard Home Depot but an unusual shape - about half as deep front to back and twice as wide left to right (or, take a standard store, cut it where the aisle runs across the store and put the back half next to the front half).
This is why many stores haven't gotten into the state, as they tend to want to build the same exact store every time and it is hard to do so with the VT rules - those that have adapted (like the examples above) have done just fine (though that Walmart does have a Kmart nearby that has, at least as far as I know, remained open so far, unlike so many), and (at least with the Bennington area) it has left it with very little of the empty, decaying buildings seen in so many other areas, so it seems to work on that front as well.

Why can't they demolish the old building and rebuild? It wouldn't still leave an abandoned building, right?

A lowercase Target logo, that's new
In early 2018 they began renovations of the Southington, Connecticut Target that are now complete. They renovated the Pizza Hut/Starbucks snack bar area. I believe they removed the Jewelry Department. They changed the Woman's Clothing area around adding a larger section of Maternity clothing and clothing for Plus sized women. Some things they changed around just for the sake of changing things. For example in the Men's Clothing area they reversed the socks/underwear with the jeans/pants. When walking down to the Men's Clothing area socks/underwear used to be to the left by the fitting rooms and jeans/pants used to be to the right. Now it's the opposite.
Now they also have something planned for the parking lot. I don't know if they're planning a redesign, but to me it seems like they're going to be doing more than just paving. There are a lot of chalk outlines. Particularly around the things in the middle of the parking lot where they got trees and plants planted.
Target plans to add to their toy departments following the departure of Toys "R" Us.
Our local Target - Avon, OH - added the Self-Checkouts recently in place of "Guest Services Registers 1-3," at the expense of having an in-store cafe of any kind, instead putting their Guest Services/Pickup counter where the Food Avenue section was. Sure, there's still a Starbucks in the *old* Guest Services area (left of the vestibule when you walk in), but now there's no food option. :( I mean, sure, the Guest Services/Pickup counter looks pretty with its hardwood accents and all, but why have zero food options?
Unless, of course, ANOTHER renovation is in the works to put a cafe/Pizza Hut Express in somewhere...
Same thing just happened to my Oaks PA (Phoenixville mailing address) store.
Original service desk was ripped out a few years ago and replaced with a Starbucks.
Service desk moved to "Express registers and service"
Now they ripped out the snack bar / cafe and replaced it with a Service desk.
Old express registers are now self checkouts.

QuoteFresh off one of its best quarters in years, Target Corp. wants to step up its toy game ahead of the holiday season â€" its first without Toys R Us as a competitor.
All remaining Toys R Us and Babies R Us stores shut down earlier this summer after the New Jersey-based retailer declared bankruptcy, creating an opportunity for other retailers in the kids-merchandise space. Target (NYSE: TGT) was a clear beneficiary: Sales of baby clothing and shoes rose nearly 20 percent in the most recent quarter. Hardlines â€" a category that includes toys â€" saw high-single-digit comparable growth.
"We're picking up sales that would have gone to Babies R Us and Toys R Us. … We're certainly benefitting from new toy buyers, baby buyers that are coming to Target more frequently." said Target CEO Brian Cornell on a media call following its second-quarter earnings announcement.
When Toys R Us and Babies R Us went belly up, it meant the closure of nearly 800 stores throughout the country. In a report released in March, Seth Sigman, an analyst with Credit Suisse, concluded that 90 percent of Toys R Us stores and 96 percent of Babies R Us stores had a Target within five miles.
Cornell said Target is well-positioned to take market share in this category, and is increasing inventory now to prepare for a surge that is already showing up in stores.
"We are investing in categories like toy and baby where we know we have this big opportunity ahead of us," Cornell said in an interview with CNBC. "We are going to make sure we are taking more than our fair share of that market share."
Baby products have been one of Cornell's key areas of focus since taking over in 2015, as Target has revamped its product lineup in areas such as baby goods, furniture and fashion.
But not everyone is sold on a toy-focused Target.
In February, several Target Corp. investors told Reuters they think the company should take a step back from trying to boost its toy sales. Four investors told Reuters that putting capital towards the toy category would be a waste as the retailer competes against a growing threat from Amazon.com.
Brian Yarbrough, a senior analyst with St. Louis-based Edward Jones, warns that toys can be a lower margin business â€" and a competitive one, as other retailers like Walmart and Kohl's put significant investments in their toy offerings. However, he believes that Target's toy momentum will likely continue into the holiday season, through this time next year.
"The hope is that these customers will be new to Target, and this will get them to shop at other categories," Yarbrough said.
Beyond simply gaining market share from Toys R Us, Target expressed interest earlier this year in the company's real estate. Back in March, the company bid on a former Toys R Us location in Kendall, Fla.
I couldn't find the story on their website (or anywhere else online for that matter), but during the 4PM News on NBC Connecticut there was a story that Target was looking at possibly opening a store in the former Walmart Neighborhood Market in Bishop's Corner Shopping Center in West Hartford, CT.
Brammy's Thoughts: This is interesting to say the least. The former Walmart Neighborhood Market is just under 60,000 square feet and there is a full-sized Target on the New Britain/West Hartford line on Hartford Road near West Farms Mall. This Target was built as a Target Greatland, is 141,000 square feet, and opened as one of the first Target's in Connecticut in 2000 or 2001.

Target would have been better in that spot from the beginning. Even with New Britain's location close by, there is no Target near that end of WH, or the Farmington Valley for that matter. I also don't believe size would be an issue. Pretty much every store in West Hartford is smaller compared to surrounding towns (Big Y, both Stop and Shops). But there is one big plus...MONEY. They will do well there if they open there and Target certainly fits the neighborhood more. No doubt they'll come up with a special design for this store.
The new flexible size format is a recent addition to the Target chain. It's what's allowing them to open their first Vermont store. (See elsewhere in this thread.
Anyway here's an article form the Hartford Courant about them coming to Bishop's Corner.

I went in the Target in South Burlington VT for the first time 2 days ago which was its first day of its soft opening and it was busy like Black Friday. NOW VT has stores in ALL 50 states. the store is a small format store and has a mural. It's in the University Mall where Bon Ton is.
Easy, Fast And Free Delivery Is Key To Target's Plan To Beat Amazon This ChristmasBarbara ThauContributor
Retail,
Forbes MagazineQuoteTarget’s 1,800 stores, “which are within 10 miles of most Americans," are the linchpin of the “Run and Done†bricks-and-clicks delivery strategy integral to grabbing market share this holiday season â€" including about $100 billion that’s up for grabs from the downfall of Sears and Kmart â€" said CEO Brian Cornell during a press event in New York City.
“I have never felt better about our position and our readiness to deliver†merchandise for the holiday, he said, the make-or-break period for the retail industry when stores generate the bulk of their annual sales.
To that end, in time for the holidays, Target said it will be the first U.S. retailer to offer free two-day shipping on hundreds of thousands of items from Nov. 1 to Dec. 22, waiving its usual $35 fee and the requirement to use its Target RedCard. (Take that, Amazon.)
Another first: It will offer same-day delivery with Shipt (which it purchased in December 2017), as well as provide its Drive Up, curbside pickup service on digital orders in 1,000 locations coast to coast.
Grabbing Sears, Kmart Sales This Holiday
The cheap-chic discounter has invested big in stores, which in the second quarter fueled a 6.5% comp-store sales rise â€" a growth metric industry watchers said was a thing of the past in the Amazon era â€" and a 6.4% traffic gain that was unmatched by its retail rivals, Cornell said.
That investment helped steamroll online sales, which rose 41% in the second quarter, as 50% of digital orders are now fulfilled in stores, Cornell said.
The symbiotic relationship between stores and digital has also fueled comp-store sales gains, driven by “our guest who is shopping with us more frequently and using more of our [delivery options],†he said.
Cornell expects that amid the exodus of Sears and Kmart stores from the mall, “We’ll even be more of a destination in those markets†this holiday season. The “accelerated decline†of the beleaguered retailers means there is “$80 billion to $100 billion†in sales for the taking, he said. “As those stores close, there is retail market share up for grabs as we’re, invested for the long term.â€
Siphoning Business From Toys ‘R’ Us
Target is on schedule to remodel 1,000 stores by the end of 2020. Key to that goal is telling a new toy story.
As of the end of this month, the retailer has added nearly 250,000 square feet of permanent new space to toys in 500 stores, and is offering close to 2,500 new and exclusive items for the holiday, nearly double last year, Target executives said.
Target has repurposed downtrending categories such as entertainment, and donating more of that space to toys.
What’s more, 100 stores have undergone complete toy remodels. Executives said it’s amping up the fun factor in the category with exploratory and interactive displays for kids. In addition, in light of Toys ‘R’ Us’ demise, large merchandise that the chain once had no presence in have been added to the mix, such as John Deere tractors and big doll houses.
“We want to be a major destination for toys during the holiday season,†Cornell said.
This holiday, “over 80% of all retail shopping is [still] going to happen in store.â€
They painted the exterior of the New Britain, Connecticut target and put up new signage on the building as well.

I'd regard much of Business Insider's content with a lot of skepticism. They are so sensationalist in their approach that I really can't fully trust them.
The Target in Bensalem, PA has recently been updated with new interior & exterior decor. I don not have pictures of the interior, but here is the exterior:

The Meriden, CT store recently closed their snack bar completely. They replaced the other nearby locations with Starbuck's along with remodeling the store. This one has also not received a hint of a remodel. I wonder what the future of this location will be. It is across the street from a dying mall that is trying to reinvent itself. Meriden itself is not a very attractive city, but it's on the side of town closest to two affluent towns.
Target just reported a 90% drop in earnings. That's nine-zero.
If that keeps up store remodels will be the least of their worries.

In a dramatic break from their traditional practice of direct marketing through in-home parties, Tupperware has decided to for the first time place their product in stores. Specifically Target.

I'm thinking that anyone who relied on home parties to drive sales and then had to live through the country shutting down for COVID for two years felt some urgency to rethink their strategies.

Not the first time they did this, though the other was a short-term trial and they stopped it due to worries about it taking too many customers from their regular sellers.

All in all the increased theft is adding up to a projected $600 million hit to their bottom line.

Well, I don't want to say this but we lost a photo of the old Hedwig Village Target in Houston. It appears that the owner of the photo deleted it off the website.
From what I remember, The store used to have red green and blue stripes on the exterior when it was open.
Hopefully someone out here still has a photo of it.
Back in 2019, I did visit a store that had those stripes before remodel.
Never mind about the lost photo, I downloaded it back in April 2022 before it was taken off the internet by the owner of the photo. This location was interesting, this store had it's soft opening on November 28th, 1969 and a Grand Opening on December 1st, 1969. They would receive 1-2 remodels over the years. The last one was in around the Mid 1990's with the addition of the Red, Green, & Blue Stripes on the building (it was pretty much remodeled to the P97 Prototype package if that's the case). It would be replaced by T-1435 on 984 Gessner Rd (which had P01 when it opened) after closure.
This Target was store T-17.
Here's a photo of the store I do have:

I have a Target near me (Valparaiso, IN, T-1286) seems like it is remodeling every couple of years, more often than any other. I don't understand that. Does anyone else find that true about their store?
Target will close nine stores next month, citing rising organized theft and crime levels.

It doesn't surprise me that Target is closing stores in the Portland area. Walmart pulled out of the Portland, Oregon area entirely earlier this year, citing crime and shoplifting problems as well.
