Sears has announced their closing its photo studios nationwide.

I see some of these studios are in Wal-Marts too. So does this have nothing to do with the Kmart photo studios?

Kmarts portrait studios are run by Olan Mills which is a separate company.

QuoteSears Canada to close two, possibly three, Toronto area stores

Friday, June 14, 2013
7:53 PM EDT

Sears Canada is not exiting the Canadian market, said president and Chief Executive Officer Calvin McDonald, after announcing that two more stores will be closed next March, at Yorkdale Mall and Square One in Mississauga. The location at Scarborough Town Centre might also be closed. “This is not Sears giving up and leaving Canada. We’re still the largest department store in the country,” said McDonald.

Last year, Sears Canada returned three leases to mall owner Cadillac Fairview, giving up prime locations at malls in Ottawa, Vancouver and Calgary for $171-million. It later sold back another lease at the Deerfoot Mall in Calgary.

Seattle-based department store retailer Nordstrom will open stores in those three former Sears spaces, and new locations at Sherway Gardens and at Yorkdale. It hopes to eventually operate as many as ten department stores in Canada and at least 15 Nordstrom Rack discount locations.

I don't live anywhere in the state of Kentucky, but I have been to the store in Fayette Mall several times. I feel bad that my younger brother will no longer be able to get his car work done at The Sears Auto Center though.

In Canada they completely phased out the Sears Auto Center business...

Sears in Presque Isle is closing http://bangordailynews.com/2013/07/09/business/sears-in-presque-isle-to-close-at-least-58-to-lose-their-jobs/

You've got to wonder how long the Kmart will remain open up there.
What city and state is this Sears Store in?

Presque Isle, Maine.

I don't think that Sears and Kmart can both be in the same mall together.  They try to turn Kmart into Sears with Craftsman and Kenmore products so both stores probably sell similar merchandise.

In Rochester NH there is a mall with a full-line Kmart store and a smaller Sears dealer store selling Craftsman and Kenmore too.

What the !??!

Maybe mall management realized that it was better to lower the lease rate and keep Sears than to have a large empty space to fill (which would be hard to do).

Does anybody know why Kmart Corporation purchased Sears right after Kmart escaped bankruptcy back in 2005? Sears has completely destroyed Kmart's image since Kmart purchased Sears. Not only that, but Kmart owns Sears. Does anybody know why Kmart Corporation became Sears Holdings when it is actually Kmart that owns Sears?

Somebody please get rid of Eddie Lampert and hire a new CEO who knows what he's doing! Sears and Kmart have suffered enough!

You can both say that again. I agree with the both of you completely.

I predict that if Kmart and Sears goes under, that some locations be sold to Shopko, and others will be sold to Meijer, but both stores would likely demolish the old Kmart and Sears stores and build new stores on the same site.

Shopko would likely take the locations at shopping malls filling the void left by a Sears or Kmart that once anchored the shopping mall (Shopko stores anchor numerous shopping malls and strip malls as well as big box power centers in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan's upper peninsula, as well as stores as faraway as Washington state, Nebraska, and Idaho.)

As for Meijer, they would likely take most of the larger free-standing former Kmart, Super Kmart, and large single-story Sears locations and convert those to Meijer hypermarkets, unless they are structurally unsound, they would tear down and build new.

Shopko, Target, Kohl's, or Big Lots would take over the single-story Sears locations that currently anchor single-story shopping malls.

Most Sears, two stories or more, could become Boscov's, Target (the stores would have to be modified to include special sets of escalators that can accommodate both people and shopping carts called "Vermaports"), or if the mall can handle upscale anchors, Bloomingdale's, Macy's, Nordstrom, or Lord & Taylor.

QuoteThis Legendary Retailer Might Be The Worst Investment You Can Make Right Now

Friday, August 23, 2013 8:30 AM
By David Sterman

The business of retailing is quite simple. You have a large base of fixed costs tied up in real estate, inventory and personnel, and you aim for a base of sales above those expenses. When that happens, each incremental new dollar of sales can quickly flow to the bottom line.

But this kind of operating leverage can work the other way, as falling sales make it harder to cover costs. That's the kind of negative leverage that has been in place for some time at Sears Holdings (Nasdaq: SHLD), which just announced another dismal quarter at both its flagship Sears stores as well as its Kmart stores. If the current sales trends continue, Sears won't even be around in five to 10 years.

I think SHLD should close every remaining Kmart and Sears store, and sell all their assets off piece by piece to more profitable retailers.

My Mom said she saw an article in the newspaper the other day that said the CEO of Sears says they can't afford to update/remodel stores because of employee pensions.

Sears is the GM of retailers.  It's been in business for so long that they probably have several thousands employee pensions.  They're big costs for a company but I don't think that they are the only reason for the lack of remodels.

Even if they remodel every store... at this point, Sears is doomed.  People are already shopping elsewhere.
