me i nfront of Toys r us in SAvannah. XISMZERO  seen my SAvannah (which will have a BABies r us in the Toys r us and renovations started June 15) and WIlmington NC pics.

XISMZERO   did you see my pics???? I hope you see them and comment on them.

Dan, awesome finds, especially Wilmington, NC. It looks as if they will be remodeled very soon -- excellent job getting there just in time!

I wonder if Clay, NY is on the chopping block anytime soon? It's amazing that store is still holding in there. And how about the Horseheads store?! There's no Babies "R" Us out there but that one must be up soon.

By the way, it looks like another old-school store has been remodeled. Here's a banner I found on the store's page of new openings... Topeka, KS store is no longer old-school...

The new stores and logos SUCK @$$!!!!

What ever happened to the colorful charm of yesteryear?

I cannot stomach watching thse TRUs transform into these disgusting modern structures. Its like turning an old colonial or victorian home into a contemporary. Its sacrilege.

What I cant understand is why anyone on the board would approve these changes. Dont they realize RETRO is IN?????

XISMZERO

George, I share your lament. As a matter of fact, I'm deeply saddened whenever I see a Toys R Us today that has either been painted over or remodeled to fit a "corporate blandness." Can't understand why they've abandoned the wonderous look many of us grew up knowing.

Sadly, that's been the wave of the chain and many others for decades -- and their newest CEO Eyler isn't looking to bring back the rainbow-colored goodness of the chain from it's 1970s-80s era.

If you read the mission statement of CEO John Eyler, he plans turn all existing stores into Toys R Us-Babies R Us superstores -- and now more than ever that is finally happening. Can't blame him -- his job is to keep the company financially afloat. He admits Babies R Us has outclassed the TRU brand and he's doing what he can to save the company as a whole. In actuality, he's probably done more/has a direction for the company than the former CEOs have in the past (need I remind you of the blackout between late 90s/early millennium age of lame remodels and "catch ups," mission (im)possible store layouts nonsense, etc.).

When I did my article on the Clay store on my website, my goal was to bring attention best I could and hope the bring attention to how significant it is to recognize what made the chain so beloved to many of us who shopped there as a kid. Their unique multicolored store facade was largely apart of that!

I'm realistic, so I'm not saying they need to stop remodeling older stores but it would be wonderful if they brought back that original concept and connected with the chain's roots today. TRU was one of the only chains you'd be treated to seeing a joyous rainbow-colored keyboard of colors upon driving past it!

The Clay store is a wonderful artifact -- when it goes their store's history is as good as kaput. I hope they know how important it is -- at least among us nuts!

I seriously need to get to the Clay store before something happens.

I'd love to take my kids and photograph them inside and outside of the store but I'm afraid driving from southern CT to Clay NY with 4 children won't work. Think its about 5 or 6 hour ride eh Nick? My kids are 7,5,3 and 1.

I totally agree with you about the feeling I used to get when my parents would drive up to our local TRU. That colorful building with the brown roof was just a staple of my childhood. I'll never forget it. Then my favorite part was running inside down the long zig zag aisle which dumped you into the grocery store style aisles. It was so much fun. I remember running right to the action figure aisle, then over to the lego and last stop would be video games once we got into the 80s. I remember returning 3 coleco vision systems at Milford TRU. Damn Qbert would get me so frustrated I used to swing the controller and smash it on the top of the system. We kept buying new ones and then putting the broken ones in the new box and returningfor a refund. HAHA. My dads brilliant idea. Still works to this day with alot of electronic products. :insane:

Massapequa, NY (on Long Island). Taken 6-28-2008.

The town assessor reports this one was built in 1976. You can tell it's an oldie because of the bars on front of the building. This was probably remodeled back in 1992 or so and not since.

Built in 1976. Long Island was a heavy market for the chain in the 70s and 80s.

Whats the deal with the "R" off to the side there? It looks out of place.

I had to pick up some stuff at Stew's this past Sunday, saw a fresh coat of paint on the building and tape on some of the fixtures outside. Oddly, there were also employees still inside at 8PM.

I took pictures of a brown-and-rainbow Toys R Us/Kids R Us in Waco, Texas, emailed them to xismzero[AT]yahoo[DOT]com but never got back a response. It was cool, though...
