XISMZERO  check out my pics of Toys  r us' from pages 44-48. I went on a road trip for one week in the early 20s of October of 2007 (Excepte for the mass ones) and got these Toys r us' and covered a good amount of Toys r us' that time forgot!

Amazing pictures, Dan! You found a ton of old school stores! It seems like most old ones were repainted over in white, which is of course, sad.

thanks, what other comments do you have on these stores.

I wonder why the rainbows were repainted. that burns me.

I knew about CEDAR RAPIDS, MOLINE, PORTAGE, BLOOMINGTON via Google Satellite but didn't know what most of them looked like at eye level enough to study them.

I find it odd how the company is draping stores formerly rainbow striped into solid colors, white or blue stripes - seems like more lazy paint/attempts to remodel jobs. I can't figure out why they're doing this, but it seems like the new trend. I'll bet CLAY will soon paint over in white too (like HORSEHEADS).

About MOLINE, very interesting looking store because of the box-shaped glass exit, Chidren's Bargain Town sign and different Jeoffrey. Looks like the YORK (PA) store; slots under the roof, corner shaped store, longer bar stripes along the edge and four ripples on the roof (as opposed to mostly three)! Did you notice the old-school pastel colored logo on the building side? Very, very cool, vintage store.

Also "I told him I am obsessed with BRown Toys r us' and he said he has seen a website of it." --was he possibly talking about my website? Did he notice you taking shots of the store?

CEDAR RAPIDS has an interesting stone-arch around the stripes - never saw this type before. Also has an interesting "curtain" effect with the ripples on the edges.

BLOOMINGTON had rainbow stripes a few years ago as well as a brown sign. A contact emailed me after seeing my website claiming he took a slew of pictures of the store, but had reported it was painted white. Cool old sign on the building side.

PEORIA is a weird looking store, indeed. I can't even guess what year it is judging on the trends of most other stores. Must've been early 80s because of the colorful entrance/exit signs

ORLAND PARK must've been an oldie - you can tell it must've been an old store either a TRU or something else.

PORTAGE is very interesting! And what a weird looking entrance door and outlined lettering! Cool brown sign too.

BATTLE CREEK looks like the EUCLID store. You should've gone for more shots of this one. That parking lot looks terrible as well.

All very different stores, Ohio, Michigan and Illinois are oddball states for varied looking stores.

good comments, that was all the better pics I  could get of battle creek.

I am guessing peoria opened maybe in 1984

ABout the manager who said he has seen a website of brown Toys r us', he had a more enthusiazed tone of voice and I dont know what website he was refering to, maybe yours. He did not notice me taking shots of his store, I only did it outside and if he saw me taking shots while outside i dont think it would have mattered, right? I noticed the old school pastel cover. I still wonder what he ment by saying "one of the original 50".

I am mad that the rainbow entrances were painted over!!!!!

I guess the midwest has more "left behind" or "Time forgotten" Toys r us.

He was probably talking about the first slew of stores in the entire country. 1978 was the year stores began to populate all over the U.S. It would also seem that the midwest is an area where there are a lot of patchy left behind/cheaply remodeled stores. They must be hanging in there...

By the way, I forgot to mention the AUBURN, MA store - could this be a prototype for what the company wants to do next? Seems to be one of if not the first store to have the new "R" logo on it.

Hah, yeah I saw that the other day while I was the Auburn Mall.  That store has always been pretty dead.  Everyone buys toys cheaper whether at the mall, Blackstone Valley Shoppes, or Wal-Mart down the street.

XISMZERO

This is my hypothesis as to why many of the struggling stores are seeing their fair share of cheaply repainted and lacking remodels - the chain can't spare the bucks to keep up those locations which aren't managing to pull in enough revenue. If you ask me, I don't know who ever thought draping a 20 year plus design in solid tones would be a good idea but the results are muddled, horrible looking.

Seems only right for Auburn, MA to have gotten a reface: it's well known and has been there since before 1980 and is deepest south servant in Mass. Auburn also tends to breed higher medium income patrons, if I'm not mistaken.

I guess the Springfield store isn't doing well enough to see a remodel beyond the 1992 version it has now, about 50 miles north-easterly. I can't explain Woburn, MA, it seems to be a busy store everytime I've seen it and but still struck with the brown roof syndrome and lazy blue paint job.

Either way, with the fall of KB Toys recently (fall = closing over 100 more stores) and Wal-Mart and Target's lead paint recall bonanza, parents may be lesser inclined to push toys this season and more kids may want, as they've been for a while now, more electronics, video games, etc. Either way, not good for TRU.

Another old-school hack job in DURHAM, N.C.

I'm guessing it's this one because it appears to be the last old one in the state judging by Google Satellite. Must have been built between 1984-1986 (I want to say '84)? Notice the white old-school Jeoffrey sign, removed rainbow planks and old colored/spaced signage.

Here's another odd looking store in MAYS LANDING, N.J.

Notice how it has the rainbow stripes on a 90's looking store. It had a Kids R Us on the left side, now occupied by OfficeDepot. Don't know about year built, but this store also has two entrances, another oddity.
