The dimensions of the pylon sign are optimal for using the Aussie Kmart logo. I've seen the Aussie Kmart logo used in store closing signage. As an aside, I wonder if Kmart Australia will feel inclined to rebrand after the US Kmart goes under.

Kmart used to have that logo in the US years ago, so that's probably why they are using it, if they never changed it.
Kmart US never had this logo:

...but we had this logo:

Zayre88

The Australian Kmart logo has even been used for store closings.

Below the Portsmouth NH store:

Not sure how can this happen, maybe someone goes online and just searches for a Kmart logo then it ends up on a sign.

retailisking

^That's the store closure sign I was referring to. I imagine the liquidation company does just as you describe in acquiring the logo to print up the sign.

Yeah I know it's important to us retail nerds, but I'm willing to bet the average person going to the sale gives a crap about the logo.

While the American Kmart stores die, their Australian counterparts will continue with business as usual as if nothing has happened, since they have moved on to different ownership. Kmart has not been related to their Australian counterparts since 1991, when Kmart US bought back their remaining shares in their Australian stores, which at the time were owned by Coles-Myer. (Kmart AU/Kmart NZ, along with sister retailers Coles, Myer, and Target AU now belong to Wesfarmers Ltd.)

I tried to get into the shuttered Putnam, CT Kmart a few weeks ago but I had no success in doing so. It's a shame too, all my friends wanted to go in there and take pictures. *sigh*

Isn't that KMart an old The Fair store? Or am I incorrect...

I don't believe it was. I'm pretty sure it was built from the ground up in the early 90's, I could be wrong though.

Built Originally as a BIG K-Mart, then after a Subdivision (By Big Lots) it reverted to just K-Mart.

I know their very profitable.. but I am surprised the NYC stores haven't been closed and sold for the sheer fact that the properties are likely worth millions.. maybe billions since they are in very prime locations.... Herkimer NY is one store that I am surprised hung on as long as it did despite the face that they have the smallest wal-mart supercenter I have ever seen
K-Mart really needed to modernize their stores.. since literally every K-Mart you go to it is nearly impossible to tell where/when you are..I am in NYC on several occasions throughout the year.. I look at all the modern buildings and architecture, then I go to K-Mart and it is like I am back home..

the NYC ones must be profitable yet the one near Macys half the lights are off, an escalator is broken and it feels like a 2nd hand store.

The one in HErkimer I went there in 2006 and it was dead as was uticas now closed one.

Kmarts stores look same as they were 25 yrs ago!!!! and I go in them half the lights are off. even many they remodeled w the red logo are closing, even larger ones w it.

what year will the rest of them go?

I would predict that Kmart and Sears stores would all close by 2020, although I wish the company would miraculously turn around. I would hate to see them go, and at least where I live, we have Kmart in Vernon, CT and Sears in Meriden, CT. Hoping for at least a few more years with those stores, especially Kmart. It's nice to have another option besides Walmart, and they still have nice merchandise if you look for it. My mom loves their clothes.

I know you're talking close to your location, but for the rest of the class there are 4 KMART's left in the state of Connecticut:

VERNON (as you mentioned)
Milford
Watertown
Southbury

Kmart Australia/New Zealand still uses their previous logo as a secondary logo, while using the logo with an oversized K:

It's just like how cable networks Nick and CN have secondary logos with their full names, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, respectively.

Has anyone else seen the "Summer Blowout: 10-50% off everything" sale that kmart is having?
They say it's so they can make "room for fab fall deals", yeah sure.
I suspect that much of the items they sell won't be restocked and they are just using the extra income to stay afloat so they can make it until Christmas.
If that's the case it's likely the complete going out of business for kmart will be sometime early 2018.

That's all speculation and people have been guessing the end for years now so who knows but that is what it seems like to me.

I've seen ads on Facebook to enter to win a $2500 KMART Gift Card. I didn't think any KMART stores had $2500 worth of merchandise in them. *RFLMAO*

Omg that would be the perfect way to troll someone, they would get the gift card only to find out the closest one is a hour away, and then the look on their face when they see how bad the store actually is. :D

You might be jumping to conclusions. I went to kmart.com and this "summer blowout" looks like a run of the mill seasonal clearance/markdown that every store does to entice people to buy seasonal items before they begin bringing in their next season's merchandise. NOT their entire stock/website. Let Kmart's demise happen when the time comes. Until then, let them continue on. I don't understand how some people want to see them disappear completely and try and predict the end. I don't want to see them go just yet.

I very well could be jumping to conclusions, hence why I said " That's all speculation" I have no idea.
Also it's not just seasonal items on sale if you look everything is at least 10% off, the two kmarts I visited on Sunday had pretty much every item in the entire store discounted with higher discounts on the seasonal items. I don't know what retail is like out where you live but I've never walked into a Walmart or a Target and seen the whole store 10%-50% off for a "run of the mill seasonal clearance", not to mention most of the signs were hand written with the amount of percentage off which I've only ever seen during a going out of business or liquidation sale.
Another thing that I find odd is on the kmart website and in store they are advertising only 10% off in some sections but many of the products are actually cheaper than that, so why would you not want to properly advertise the lower prices?

Maybe you are right and this is just a normal sale but I've personally never seen anything like it except when a store was going out of business. I just can't see any other reason why they would run a sale like this unless they want people to think that their local Kmart store is going out of business cause that's what it looked like when I walked into my local kmart.

Look at those signs and tell me your first impression

For comparison here is a kmart that closed

AmesNewington

That does look very conflicting indeed. On one hand, I've never seen a store that was going out of business take it upon themselves to run a GOB sale, especially if the remainder of the stores were closing. Usually things are "business as usual" until the very day the liquidators take over. On the other hand, those pics sure do look like what the liquidators would do, just a very silent way to do it. If this is true, it's a shame that if Kmart were really going under completely that they would have to do things like this and not in the orderly way it has always been done. They have gotten very sloppy in the way they do business and this kind of thing discredits them even further. I am supposed to go to the Vernon CT store in about two weeks, so I'll see what things are like there.
