We have an abandoned K-Mart right across the road from where I live and there has been some strange activity going on lately.  When the store closed in the spring of 2005, there was talk of it becoming one of the new Sears/K-Mart stores with Craftsman tools, etc.

Months went by and nothing happened and then one day there were signs saying to "excuse our dust" while they renovated the building into something else.  Well, that's been a year ago and nothing.  However, I have seen cars on more than one occasion parked up near the door and yesterday, there was a car and one of the doors was open!

I wish that I'd had time to stop and had my camera with me (since I have no fear of entering an abandoned store in the daylight!).  I will be watching that store and will try and send some pictures in the near future.

:goodidea: :insane: :dizzy: :bouncing:

where was this?

I live in Cordova, TN while is east of Memphis and out of the 5 K-Marts that we had at one time, all have closed except for one that is in a terrible neighborhood.

The store that is across from me is located on Germantown Pkwy. and I have not had time yet, but plan to go over with my trusty camera and see what I can find and try to post some pictures.

I would even consider going inside since I have no shame where closed stores are considered.  I went inside the Mall of Memphis on more than one occasion while they were tearing it down and even managed to get one of the chairs out of the food court!

;) :D  :) :yup:

here is the former k-mart in boston / dorchester mass in the south bay center that closed in april 2003 in the 2nd wave of closings. THE store opened november 1993 and was 128,000 sq.ft. was the largest k-mart in mass. I wbent to the closing sale in march 2003. the store had k-marts target auidence I when I went and it was busy then and. ARticles said they thought this k-mart did a lot of business. but then the store is not far from a high crime area and I heard the lease may be high. THIS IS A STORE I, OR ANYONE, NEVER THOUGHT WOULD CLOSE But target made slight alterations to the building.

I have pictures of this k-mart when it was k-mart, but I w/ill have to digitize them

as I have said before, the 2nd wave of bankruptcy closings (spring 2003 round) was more of a bummer as a lot of nicer, shinnier stores closed and caused half the supercenters to close. a lot of people where bummed by some of these closings and in some places k-mart closing was the only store in that neighborhood. Like they closed a super center in detroit in that round that was popular with people and the store fought hard to open and among most profitable when it opened in 1998 and people felt betrayed and angry when it closing and it was the only store like that in that neighborhood and some said it was in a high crime area, and the one in dearborn on the detroit border closed. detroit is k-marts stronghold. EVEN SOME K-mart stores that were converted into supercenters (UTICA MI, Middletown NY) in late 2001 closed in this round (maybe they were spending more money than they were making!!!). KMART PULLED OUT OF ALASKA (PROBABLY BECAUSE OF DISTRIBUTION AS THAT WAS ONE OF THE FACTORS) And MOST BIG MARKETS IN TEXAS LIKE HOuston, dallas, fort worth, austin, san antonio, tyler, brownsville (probably bewcause of wal-marts presence), but kept all their stoers in el paso, so they closed 80 precent of the texas stores. Thjey closed the super center in new haven, one of my friends at the college told me it got alot of business, but it was robbed alot. the one in wallingford CT closed for some reason. EVEN ONE IN WEST VIRGINIA AND VIRGINIA CLOSEd when there was no other store for a while away and those stores where newer ones. WHY DID MANY NEWER ONES GO!!!, but alot of older ones stay, maybe because the older ones opened during hte peak of their expansion and had remained a loyal customer base and have LOWER RENTS!!! MY POint the 2nd wave ticked a lot of us off. Like alot of newer CONNECTICUT STores closed, like windsor!! THE KMART SUPERCENTER IN KINGSTON WAS INCLUDED IN THIS ROUND!!!!!!!!!!!! the k-mart that was nice in rochester / henritta, I hear, closed. I hate hower newer ones get closed. A lot of newer k-marts looked cavernous adn had an oval on top of the entrance of the store!!!!

reasons for 2nd wave closings where profitablity, sales, competition (That shows they are cowards), and maybe areas of theft had something to do with it

here is the old kmart in dorchester
