I have seen them use that Kmart price sticker styled above until the early 90's (then they switched it to the 90's logo).

And that pic is of their newest remodel. A store near me has a sign like that too.

how come some areas have a lot of kmarts and some have a sparse amount of kmarts?

Like the wilkes barre / scranton area had like 5 kmarts, the albany area had 7, but the providence area has like 2 or 3 and the boston area has 4 and the hartford area has 2. there were 2 kmarts around binghamton new york. there was 3 kmarts around syracuse and 2 in poughkeepsie.

I know there has been discussion about the Cromwell, CT    K-Mart, but I just wanted to know if anyone has been up to that location lately. If anyone has a photo of the store, or can just give an update on its condition, or its look.

Thanks!

I did'nt knew these old signs could still be standing today!  They looked big and bright with the letters in neon.  I wonder how that big square with the "K" could stay in place on that small pole ...

Kmart's slogans were:
80's:The Saving Place
Late 80's- possibly early 90's-Satisfaction Always
Mid 90's- Kmart Is The Creative Place
By the way, when Beechmont Mall was still around, I vaguely remember a small food area in the back of the store. On the outside, there were cinderblocks, white with the top blocks red. It was very similar to Target's little food places. anyhow, right before the mall was demolished, they took it out.

this kmart is closing!!!!!!!!! well it is too close to the ones in clifton park and schenectady! the store was not very busy when I went in about 2 months ago, biut I went there at 3 pm on a monday! My pictures of this store are on page 29.  there is another post I have of the Kmart in scotia / glenville on page 30 on post 16. I heard it opened in 1971. But I say the store is in scotia. I mapquested how far the closing store (Glenville / scotia) is from the Clifton park one and they are 8.22 miles apart and the glenville store is 7.17 miles from the rotterdam mall one.  When I went to latham, the lot was bare, probably because I was there at 9-9:30 am. But I have been to some kmarts that where busy. they are just not as busy as they once where.

Kmart in Glenville to close
Discount retailer, which faced stiff competition from nearby Wal- Mart, to shut doors in August

GLENVILLE -- A Kmart store on Route 50 will close in August, about four years after a Wal-Mart supercenter opened down the road.
Like many Kmarts around the region, the Glenville store was often overshadowed by the nearby Wal-Mart, which is twice the size and seemed to draw well over twice as many customers.

But while the closing raises the question of whether Wal-Mart is winning the battle between the two discount retailers, Kmart officials and other experts say shoppers shouldn't read too much into it.

"We open and close stores like all retailers do," said Chris Brathwaite, a spokesman for Kmart owner Sears Holding Corp. "That's part of our normal business practice."

Brathwaite said the company had no plans to close any other Kmart stores in the area.

Eight other Kmart stores operate in the region; the closest to the Glenville store is at Rotterdam Square mall, which is newer and larger.

Brathwaite said he did not have a specific closing date for the Glenville store, but said the company hoped to provide jobs for employees at other local Sears or Kmart stores.

Kmart filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in January 2002. Sixteen months later, it completed its reorganization after closing 600 stores and borrowing $2 billion to help it compete with Wal-Mart. Kmart acquired Sears Roebuck & Co. in March 2005 and now has more than 1,400 stores around the country.

Kmart reported 2005 sales of $19.7 billion, according to the business data Web site Hoovers.com, making it the third largest U.S. retailer behind Wal-Mart and Target.

Scotia Mayor Michael McLaughlin said he wasn't surprised to hear the Glenville store was closing.

"It was clear from the parking lot that business there was on the wane," he said. "It didn't have the high vitality it used to have."

Britt Beemer, founder of America's Research Group, a consumer-behavior marketing firm in Charleston, S.C., said the closure shouldn't be seen as a sign of what's to come at other Kmarts.

"If they were going to leave, they would close them all," he said. "It's probably a highly underperforming store. I would suspect the lease is up, and they're just saying 'We're out of here.' "

But some Kmart shoppers couldn't help but wonder. Most Kmarts in the region have Wal-Marts nearby, and some shoppers are struck by the difference in the number of customers at the respective stores.

Yvonne Nocera of East Greenbush, who shops at both Wal-Mart and Kmart, said she has been expecting the Kmart in her town to close at some point soon.

"The parking lot is not quite as crowded as Wal-Mart," she said after shopping at Kmart on Columbia Turnpike on Wednesday. "Wal-Mart is almost always crowded."

Rose LaFalce, a Slingerlands resident shopping at the Glenmont Kmart -- which has a Wal-Mart supercenter only a few hundred yards up Route 9W -- said she hoped the Kmart there stayed open.

She said she and her two adult daughters generally avoid Wal-Mart.

"We make it our business to come here," she said.

I know, I've heard about this store closing, and it makes me sad. I liked this Kmart(I like all the other Albany Kmarts too). Next time I go through the area, I'll snap some pics. Also, to get specific, the Kmart is actually located in the hamlet of Mayfair, in the town of Glenville, north of the village of Scotia.

notice how bare the parking lot is. In this kmart in scotia / glenville. I Was there at 3:00 pm. not very many people where in the store. it was the same size as most. probably around 85,000 sf. there was no sign, but that may not have killed it as it is visable. I wonder if displaced kmart shoppers will go to rotterdam and clifton park ones since they are like 7-8 miles from this one.

amesman

Most likely they will go to Clifton Park more than Rotterdam, because the Kmart in Glenville is right next to Glenridge Road, which turns into NY 146 which goes right to Clifton Park, but that's just my speculation.

What happens if someone opens the doors?...."Water beds on sale now. Want to try one? Go uotside and lay down, just like the bed, except no bed."
I have a funny story from ours. Well, it was time for ol' Beechmont Mall to be demolished, and Kmart to be renovated. well, they renovated just in time for Anderson Towne Centre's opening, and it looked dandy. Except for one thing:
They put up the new sign with the old logo on it!!!!!:insane::roll:

I have an idea. If K-Mart was smart, they would paint over the K of the old logo, and add a 'mart' piece next to or under it, and maybe that would look nice. Also, how much would it cost to make a plaza sign with the new logo. Big K-Mart doesn't really exist anymore. It's just K-Mart.

We have an abandoned K-Mart right across the road from where I live and there has been some strange activity going on lately.  When the store closed in the spring of 2005, there was talk of it becoming one of the new Sears/K-Mart stores with Craftsman tools, etc.

Months went by and nothing happened and then one day there were signs saying to "excuse our dust" while they renovated the building into something else.  Well, that's been a year ago and nothing.  However, I have seen cars on more than one occasion parked up near the door and yesterday, there was a car and one of the doors was open!

I wish that I'd had time to stop and had my camera with me (since I have no fear of entering an abandoned store in the daylight!).  I will be watching that store and will try and send some pictures in the near future.
