I found an interesting Kmart in Somers Point, NJ. This one is fairly new and is not a "BIG" Kmart, and still has a Little Caesars. It might have been a Caldor. There was a newer Acme in the plaza which even had a Starbucks. The Starbucks is now closed as they built one across the street.

NO it opened in OCtober 2002 and was the last store opened and was under construction before the company filed.

D_Fife, how do you know that and how do you take pictures of stores from all over the country?

Really why?

The tank cart is used because it is small enough for the tank... plus the metal allows the tank to be physically attached to the Family Dollar cart.

Why we have so many in the back... I'll never know. One theory is that there is a Family Dollar store down the street (about quarter mile) down the road with low-income apartments behind the Kmart property. I think the shipping team just collects the ones left in the back (where people dump them before going home) and use them in back.

Here's the vacant Kmart in ORANGE, CT. Taken 2-14-09.

It was a Builder's Square in its final years. It's still vacant, going on a decade and a half!

My idea of what the Kmart logo would look like in the future.

2002 prototype logo for comparison.

The people really need to stimulate the Kmart brand by  opening bigger locations with two entrances, and wider aisles that can be easily navigable with shopping carts, which has worked well with Target and ShopKo. I would also like to see the the Big K signs removed and replaced with just Kmart signs with the caption "A part of the Sears family." underneath it, as well as the name of the city on each location.

I noticed that comment in the bashing topic so i came up with something, my view of that new Kmart you suggested:

And one today. No, it doesn't have a separate entrance, this is an emergency exit.

You know, It'd be cool to see Kmart in Waterford CT, is there anyway to get one down there?

We have a Vacant Big-Y, could a K-Mart fit in a building like that?

Next time I make it up to Holyoke (which could be soon), I will get some shots of the Kmart Family Diner. I'm actually curious about the cuisine and prices myself.

Ok... so the last time I was in Kmart I was disoriented after finding that they had moved a lot of things around. They're redoing the store layout. It's a nice change I suppose. They are also in the process of building a brand new garden center (I think) on the front left corner of the building.

An update on my Torrington Kmart. I was there recently and it looks like they're in process of changing the sign. Currently the big store front sign has "Big" and it's yellow underline intact,HOWEVER the front of the Kmart part sign has been torn off leaving the interior lighting of the K exposed. It looks really cheap and bad. They couldn't AT LEAST put some type of plastic tarpover it so they can hide this embarrassment? GEEZ is this is how CHEAP Kmart has become? they leave part of a sign EXPOSED while open without covering it? how low can you go? It also look like they're taking down the smaller red Kmart Garden Center sign down too as well.

There has been an update on the the doors though, they recently put in red stripes sporting the new logo in white. They look nice at least. STILL not much change in the inside sadly. sigh. I feel bad how crappy my Kmart has become. This renovation has been taking FOREVER!

Here is another picture from my visit to South Burlington, Vermont (1/30/09)

heres what i found on http://blog.syracuse.com/storefront/

Syracuse, NY -- First, the story in a foreign language. Then we'll try to interpret.

From Retailing Today:

Sears Holdings Sees 4Q, FY Income Drop

HOFFMAN ESTATES , Ill. -- Sears Holdings reported that net income was $190 million, or $1.55 per diluted share, for the fourth quarter ended Jan. 31, compared to net income of $426 million, or $3.17 per diluted share, for the fourth quarter ended Feb. 2, 2008.

For the fiscal year ended Jan. 31, net income was $53 million, or 42 cents per diluted share compared with net income of $826 million, or $5.70 per diluted share, for the fiscal year ended Feb. 2, 2008.

"Fiscal 2008 was a very difficult year for the U.S. economy, and its effect on consumer confidence reflects the turmoil that has enveloped the retail industry and our business. We maintained our focus on providing great product and service value to our customers, many of whom feel the impact of lower incomes and tighter credit," said Bruce Johnson, Sears Holdings' interim CEO and president.

The translation: This ain't good. Fourth quarter (covering the holidays) profits less than half of what they were the year before. For the full year, income of $53 million compared to... $826 million the year before???

Brutal.

I've said this before and I'll say it again -- there's going to be a major shakeout with SearsMart, the marriage of Kmart and Sears. It ain't gonna be pretty.

On to...

* nedrow42 comments, "I'm not convinced that the move toward digital photography is the main factor driving Ritz into Chapter 11. After all, very few of their locations are still photo studios. Considering all the items that can be sold for digital photography -- memory cards, card readers, digital frames, batteries, batteries, more batteries, paper, ink, cases, filters, the list goes on... And most of these are items that sell with healthy markups. An argument could be made that there is actually more sales opportunity with more customers using digital than there was with film; after all many people were reluctant to buy and develop film if they felt that their pictures weren't very good anyways. I know people who threw away rolls of film that they never developed because they expected the pictures on those rolls were terrible. If anything, Ritz has fallen victim of its own strategy. Mall locations, as you pointed out, are not doing well for anyone right now. Couple that to the fact that Ritz pays mostly on commission and now you have one thing that very few consumers want -- high pressure sales in close quarters in a mall."

I'm right there with you on much of this. For example, I only started going to Ritz Camera AFTER I had my digital cameras, for prints, accessories, lenses.

As for "high-pressure," I never, ever experienced that at the Carousel Ritz.

* auburnlax comments, "After surfing the Kmart Web site, I saw a link for Kmart store remodeling at the bottom of the main page in which they are calling 'Kmart extreme makeover.' Seems like NY got the shaft with only two stores here getting the makeover. Wonder if they will ever fully roll this out or even come to our neck of the woods?"

Oh, there's going to be an extreme makeover all right. See above.

That is all.

Talk to me.

Sears Essentials store closing in Noblesville

The Times

The Noblesville Sears Essentials, 301 Noble Creek Drive, will close its doors on May 31. The announcement was made Thursday by Sears Holdings Corp. during the company's fourth quarter and 2008 annual report.

Formerly a Kmart, Noblesville is one of 24 stores nationwide that will close its doors on or before May 31. Thirteen states are seeing at least one Sears Holdings Corp. store close. Only Florida and Ohio, with five and four respectively, will see more closing than Indiana.

Other closings in Indiana are a Kmart in Vincennes on May 24 and a Sears Essential in South Bend on May 31. A Kmart in Clarksville and a Sears in Indianapolis' Lafayette Square Mall closed in January, along with 23 other stores nationwide.

The company said in its annual report that the net income was $190 million in the fourth quarter, which ended Jan. 31, compared to $426 million on Feb. 2, 2008.

The closings of the Noblesville and South Bend locations will leave no Sears Essentials stores in Indiana.

The nearest Sears store following the closing will be the one located in Castleton Square Mall. A Sears Hardware Store is also located at 11728 Fishers Crossing Drive in Fishers.

I knew I had a picture of this somewhere.

KmartDanny09

Northwest Ohio will be closing two more stores by May. The Perrysburg and Byran, Ohio Kmarts will begin liquidation sales on Friday.

As an associate, I'm actually glad to see Perrysburg close. Perrysburg was the closest store to us, and we send people to them if they needed something that we didn't have... but countless customers would come to us and complain about the experiences they would have there. Even calling them was a chore... it wasn't a surprise to spend 20 minutes on the phone with them to see if they had something in stock.

They would also sent people to us looking for items that they didn't have... problem was they wouldn't call us first to see if we had it... and if we didn't, the customer would thrown a "female dog" fit.

Anyways, the downside is that 120 people will lose their jobs as a result of the closings. Poor sales, poor management, plus a lost lease is what drove the Perrysburg store to the grave...

On the upside, my store is doing pretty well! We are currently 15% over last year at this time of the year... we were supposed to have sales of $13,000 yesterday, but did $35,000!!!!

Kmart Danny, I am glad to hear your store is doing well.  I like Kmart alot.  Grew up shopping there along with Ames and Caldors.  I haven't heard of any Ct closing of eighter Kmart or Sears which is a good thing.  Lets hope Kmart here is doing well too.
