Took these pictures last night. Sorry for the blur (1/24/09)

Claremont, NH (recently got new logo, never had Big K logo but had 1990 logo until last year)

Sears entrance is to the side behind the Garden Shop, but you can use the Kmart entrance

So is that a combo sears/kmart then?

It was a regular Kmart until 07/08 - there is a separate entrance for Sears but it is really just like a big "Sears section"

Is it just me, or does this look like a Kmart in a former Walmart building? I guess not...

Well the type of roof and the red stripe is a dead giveaway,so maybe. If it was a Walmart it was probably built in 1995 or so.

dmx10101

I would say yes thats a former Wal-mart.

That Kmart store was also touted as having wider aisles and better selection than your average Kmart store. They thought that going with lime would be better at the time, because of red being overused by other chains like Target. I really liked the futuristic-looking prototype logo. I just wish they would've kept that logo's physical structure, and change the gray to blue, and lime to red.

why does it say morton?

thats the city its in. The lime prototypes always have the name of the city next to the Kmart logo.

...or underneath it, like on the White Lake, Michigan prototype.

If you want to see one of the last remaining vintage Kmart logo, go to South Burlington Vt. or look at this report... picture and video (and we're in 2009)

The road sign for the store is a vintage one too.

This K mart in Northport, Al was built in 1989. Located at Northport Corners.

First time i see a white on red old Kmart logo.  I think i'm going to Burlington this summer just to see that!

videogamer75

The logo on the road sign is not necessarily vintage. The font is much different - and it is the logo currently used by Kmart Australia. Look at their website and you'll see it. The sign on the building, however, is original and old school.

TRJ22487

I'm driving to Burlington tomorrow by complete coincidence

Will take pics.

TRJ22487

Thanks to Zayre88 for the heads up on this
As soon as I swung into the parking lot I got taken back 20 years instantly
I honestly haven't even been to a Kmart of this style for 15+ years
The inside is all up to the current decade, just a small small cramped store and for whatever reason the logo was never changed.
Electronics section is tiniest I've ever seen in a current dept store
It was great to see with my own eyes in 2009

All carts were grey with updated logo, but I found this blue cart
around the back of the building behind the vacant supermarket
What supermarkets have been here? The back area is huge. I found a price chopper and shaws cart out front but obviously carts get around
The long abandoned supermarket leaves this massive plaza
with the little Kmart as the only tenant
They do not even bother plowing the parking lot in front of the vacant area

On the way back I visited the Kmart I went to most in the 90's
West Lebanon, New Hampshire

in the late 90's when the Big logo was added
red stripes were painted in gray

Garden Center

All the carts used in the store are grey with variations of the 90's logo
I was about to leave the store thinking I'd find nothing significant
When I found this hidden well behind the huge row of registers
Tied up and with a locked grate over the top! I wanted to use it!!
Much smaller than the fleet of current carts, woulda fit in my jeep nicely!

dmx10101

sweet pics..thanks for takin them

that K cafe looks a little nice than most of them.

I hope not, but just going inside the store I was pretty surprised it was still open because the store was just so tiny and crammed. The fact that logo is still on the building was so cool though.

I've been thinking for nearly a decade that the West Lebanon Kmart I took pictures of would close since Walmart opened in town around 1999-2000, but I'm suprised everytime I go there the store is still packed with cars and people. I always thought the West Lebanon Rich's and Ames seemed to do well too. I've always thought of West Lebanon as a good shopping town

The cart you saw with the locked cabinet is called the "Tank" and is used to transport the money collected at the end of the night to the cash office.

During peak-register times, it is also used as a place to store cash "dumps" for when their is excess cash in the registers.

Normally, it is stored in the office and they shouldn't have had it out.

videogamer75

I've seen my local Wal-Mart use one of their old ''Discount City'' carts from the 80's, for the same reason. They should use one of the boring old regular carts for that and let the customers use the old carts. Although, I guess it's better than them not even having one at all.

Great photos, TRJ. If you want to see another great old Kmart, come to the Watertown, CT store -- it has the 70's logo still up on the building. It's like two miles off I-84 in a sea of car dealerships and not near much other retail stores. It's a true relic!
All submitted photos were taken by myself unless stated otherwise.

Hmmm, makes me want to take a ride there with a pair of chain cutters...;)

Haha right! If only I'd known at the time what that was for

I found an interesting Kmart in Somers Point, NJ. This one is fairly new and is not a "BIG" Kmart, and still has a Little Caesars. It might have been a Caldor. There was a newer Acme in the plaza which even had a Starbucks. The Starbucks is now closed as they built one across the street.

Well my Kmart uses a "Family Dollar" shopping cart for the tank... in fact, we have several "Family Dollar" carts in back.
