Note: I have tons more store pictures on flickr.

I made a mistake on this one, this was never a Kmart. I knew Clementon had a Kmart and I thought this was it, but it turns out it was actually a W.T. Grant City (their attempt at a more Kmart-like discount store from the 60's), then a Pathmark supermarket, and lastly an indoor flea market in the early 90's. The REAL Clementon Kmart is still open, and it's down a back road.

here is the abandoned Kmart in the coliseum shopping center in Charlotte, NC. It opened in 1965 and closed in the early 90's. As you can see, it was remodeled, probably right before kmart left.

I went to a Kmart that I had never been before a few days ago, its located in Snellville, GA. I was a typical older Big K, it had a K Cafe as pictured below, and an extremely old looking pharmacy, wish I could of got a pic of it. The store was dead when I was there at like 5pm.

If you look at the pic of the K Cafe under the K Cafe sign it says "Featuring" and then a grayed out circle to the right which used to say Little Caesars. It still had a huge pizza machine and they are now serveing their brand of pizza.

I found an old generic floorplan for Kmarts, circa 1996 (sorry no Super K designs).

Is this what they still have in some places????

That is a very similar layout to the Saugus, MA store.

The only Kmart to have been recently remodeled in the Philadelphia area (where Kmart has many stores) is the one in West Chester. The store has the new logo and a new Kenmore department. It's in an old plaza which also had an Acme Super Saver and Lechters Housewares. Next to the plaza was an A&P, later Frank's Nursery, which was just demolished.:hurt::flaming:

This looks just like the current Kmart in Brookhaven, PA, which used to have a "Family Dining" department.

This was Ames store #1! It looks like their flagship store, with the lights and maybe the green logo. Does anyone know when this Kmart closed?

Kmart now is one of the only stores offering layaways for the holiday season, bet some of them still have the layaway area there too unless its been remodeled.

If I had to guess, if anyone is not using their Layaway Areas for that set purpose, then they are using them for storage, whether it is Inventory, Store Supplies, Pallets, etc. Areas in a store that are not in use, tend to get cluttered in a hurry.

Lastdaysofrain

The Somerville, MA store still has a layaway section.  Everytime I go in there there are plenty of customers using layaway.

momof3

I would definetly use the layaway if they bring it back, makes it much easier and no hiding Christmas gifts from the kids too early.

This is a former Kmart in Houston, opened in 1983. It closed long ago. Kmart made a comeback in the area in 1996, when they bought many stores from Venture, but closed all those stores in 2002. :hurt::no::flaming: This store is also next to a former Kroger greenhouse, which was later MacFrugal's and now Big Lots. And across the street, there was an old-school Target which moved recently, and a former Albertsons.

As a employee of Kmart, MOST Kmarts still have layaway, including newer and remodeled stores. Layaway is still VERY popular with customers. In fact, it is a major money maker for our stores helping to account for 15% of our sales plan (at least my store's). It gets so busy that we have to a one person run the layaway counter and we have to use the jewelry counter as a backup.

BTW, if you are planning on taking out electronics layaways, please DO SO NOW!!! After a certain date (In November, sometime before the black Friday sales), items $200 and more in the electronics department will not be eligible for layaway...

That is really the 60's era logo, not 70's.

That's the 60's era logo, not 70's.

This logo was also used during the 70's and 80's.  Our Kmart opened in 1976 with this logo and kept it until they moved to a new location in 1990.  At that time, they switched to the red "K" with the word "mart" in white script diagonally on the letter "K."

Mobil

The logo was used from 1962 to 1990. That style store on the truck box was built in the 60's though.
