TRU closing 13 percent of its store base
By Brent Felgner
Playthings -- 1/9/2006 1:21:00 PM

NEW YORK ? Toys "R" Us has begun liquidating inventories leading to the closings of 85 U.S. stores, with 12 of those units being converted later to Babies "R" Us (BRU) outlets. The closings will be completed by early spring and the BRU conversions will be accomplished prior to the holiday 2006 selling period, a company spokesman said.

"We conducted a comprehensive review of our store portfolio across the United States and these closures are a result of that review," explained TRU spokesman Kathleen Waugh. "There's no singular reason why any of them are closing."

The closings will erode the toy stores' U.S. base by an additional 13 percent from the level it reported ? 674 stores ? less than three months ago in its third quarter report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Following the shutterings, the chain will operate 587 U.S.-based Toys "R" Us stores. It currently operates 230 Babies "R" Us stores, reflecting a net gain of seven BRU stores from the Q3 report.

In addition to the 85 TRU closings with 12 conversions, an additional two toy stores ? in Biloxi, Miss., and New Orleans East ? were not reopened following the hurricanes that battered the region last fall. Those closings were not previously announced.

Waugh said there would be no further closings of TRU stores this year, but that there would be additional openings of Babies "R" Us stores. She said there were no major market withdrawals created by the closings. Where closings impacted smaller markets, customers would still be able to find Toys "R" Us stores "at greater distances." She declined to provide a complete list of the closures.

However, published reports from around the nation indicated that among the closures were: Cedar Rapids and Dubuque, Iowa; Albany, Ore.; Grand Junction, Littleton and Pueblo, Colo.; West Ashley and Columbia, S.C.; Dorchester, Cambridge and Medford, Mass.; Levittown, Commack and Freeport (Long Island) N.Y.; Bridgeton, Mo.; and Redding, Calif.

Among the closings and conversions to BRU stores are Holyoke, Mass. and Wichita, Kan.

Employees of the affected stores were notified last Friday and the liquidation sales began Saturday, Jan. 7.

Toys "R" Us is owned by an investment consortium consisting of affiliates of Bain Capital Partners, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, Vornado Realty Trust and Gordon Brothers.

Gordon Brothers, which specializes in retail liquidations and consulting for distressed retailers, joined the buyout group after the March sale announcement, but prior to the July 21, 2005, closing of the sale, according to SEC documents. The $6.6 billion buyout was funded with $1.3 billion in equity from the investors and $5.3 billion in debt.

One of three Western New York Toys R Us stores will close for good by early spring.

Company officials announced Tuesday the Williams Road site in Niagara Falls will shut down while the Amherst and Hamburg stores remain open for business.

The move is part of a nationwide reorganization that will result in 87 of 674 Toys R Us stores closing in the coming months. A dozen of those are expected to be converted into Babies R Us stores.

An inventory liquidation sale is already in progress at the Niagara Falls location. While the store will not accept returns for items bought during that time, any items bought prior to the inventory liquidation sale can be returned with a receipt until the store closes.

Local Toys "R" Us store not on closure list

By CHARLES FIEGL, cfiegl@postsar.com

Updated: 1/10/2006 5:10:49 PM

QUEENSBURY -- Toys "R" Us on Upper Glen Street escaped being named on a list of 87 toy stores scheduled to close across the country in the next few months, an official with the corporation confirmed Tuesday.

Toys "R" Us Inc. announced it would shutter 87 locations as part of its reorganization after being taken private last year, but plans to convert 12 of those into Babies "R" Us stores, The Associated Press reported. Kathleen Waugh, a spokeswoman with the company, said the Queensbury location would remain open.

The Post-Star contacted store officials on Upper Glen Street, but they would not comment on the company's announcement. They directed all questions to Toys "R" Us headquarters in Wayne, N.J.

Toys "R" Us will close two stores in upstate New York: a location in Dewitt, located outside Syracuse, and Niagara Falls in western New York, Waugh said.

The closures will cause the company to record $155 million of restructuring charges, including $45 million for the cost of liquidating the inventory, the AP said. Some $99 million will be recorded during the fourth quarter ending Jan. 28, and $56 million in the first quarter.

The announcement was made Monday by Vornado Realty Trust, which bought the company last year in a partnership with private equity firms Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. and Bain Capital Partners LLC.

Vornado said the store closures were contemplated when the retailer was acquired in July.

SYRACUSE ARTICLE SAYS from http://www.syracuse.com/business/storefront/index.ssf?/mtlogs/syr_retail/archives/2006_01.html

Monday, January 09, 2006

Toys R Leaving and so is Jo-Ann
Closing in the latest cutbacks at Toys R Us is the DeWitt store, which fronts Marshalls Plaza in a freestanding building that's been busy since 1992.

Toys R Us announced on Friday it was shutting 73 stores, including the DeWitt location, in an effort to streamline operations. A group of investors bought the troubled company in July and took it private.

In recent years, Toys R Us, the nation's largest toy retailer, has been losing business to the giant discounters, especially Wal-Mart.

Also? This:

As we heard (and reported here and in the P-S), Jo-Ann Fabrics & Crafts at Carousel Center is splitting. The company sent postcards to its best customers over the weekend telling them the store will be closing in the near future and asking them to shop at the JoAnn in Towne Center at Fayetteville.

E-mail:

* Dan in Auburn checks in about the Toys R Us closing:

"I know some real estate conglomerate (or something like that) bought TRU last year, but I hadn't heard any closings were right on the horizon. But I distinctly recall hearing on the local news a couple years ago (when the last wave of TRU closings went down), that TRU Corp was very pleased with the performance of both their Syracuse area stores, and neither was in any danger.

So does this have more to do with the nice chunk of real estate the Dewitt TRU sits on, than the store's performance?

Thanks!''

They were pleased with the performance of the Syracuse stores. I know. I spoke with them. But it's been no secret the last couple of years that Toys R has been getting pounded by Wal-Mart (and Target). And, while we're at, supermarkets and drugstores. They, too, have been heavy with toys at the holiday season. Did we forget electronics superstores? No. They, too, have snagged chunks of Toys R Us's business as more toys become more high-tech.

It's a shame. I had tons of fun myself shopping at Toys R Us over the years.

As for that piece of real estate, you can bet that Developers Diversified, the owner of a nice swag of property holding Toys R Us, the plaza and more, isn't crying crocodile tears at the loss. I think they can, and will, do big things with this plot. A lot of attention is heading that way, along with Old Navy and others.

* Norm Gauthier checks in, appropriately, on the Wal-Mart issue:

"Bob,

Just wanted to tell you that, over the years, your column has become one of my favorites. I look forward to my three times a week shot of what's new(s) on the retail front.

I'm perplexed with the local battle against Wal-Mart. This is the third time I've watched, and thrown my two cents in on, this battle. The first time was in '99 in Saranac Lake. WM wanted to move into town and a very vocal minority was able to derail it. WM moved on and we common folk were left with a shoebox sized Ames or an hour's drive to Plattsburgh to be able to do any affordable shopping.

As things would have it, Ames went belly-up, leaving absolutely no affordable shopping in town. Now they're scratching to get someone, anyone, to show interest in bringing a department store to town. No takers so far. Just desserts? Hmmmm.

Here I thought the WM battle was just one for the boonies. I'm hearing the same old 'anti' stuff that I heard seven years ago.

Thanks, and keep the good stuff coming!"

It's not just here. It's many villages, towns and cities that fear what Wal-Mart will do to their current business model. What about locally?

Let's look at the old-school Wal-Marts first -- before groceries. When Wal-Mart came to Fairmount Fair, I wrote the same article that journalists everywhere do when Wal-Mart comes to town. You know the one. About how Wal-Mart will or won't crush established businesses. I may be wrong, but taking a look at what is in the Fairmount area now and what was there when Wal-Mart came, I don't think any small businesses were crushed. It has a pharmacy. Pharmacies stayed. It had shoes. Shoe businesses stayed. Etc.

When Wal-Mart first brought groceries to CNY, in Auburn, supermarkets stuck around.

Certainly, there are examples on the other end. Take Rome. Take Central Square. Wal-Mart SuperCenters certainly weighed heavily, and sometimes were deadly, on the supermarket business.

There are two sides to the story. And change is scary.

Toys 'R' Us is closing its store at The Summit mall

The "closing" banner was hanging above the entrance to the Toys "R' Us store in Wheatfield Tuesday.

Toys "R' Us will close its store at The Summit mall in the Town of Wheatfield in early spring, after more than 13 years in business there.
The closing date has not been set, but a liquidation sale started last weekend, said Kelly Cullen, a spokeswoman for the toy retailer. The company's three other Buffalo area stores, in Amherst, Clarence and the Town of Hamburg, are not affected and will remain open.

Toys "R' Us has been in the mall, formerly known as the Summit Park Mall, since November 1992, when it took over Child World's former space.

The Wheatfield store is among 87 Toys "R' Us locations that will be shut down amid a companywide restructuring. Two are stores that never reopened after Hurricane Katrina. Twelve others will be converted into Babies "R' Us stores, but the Wheatfield store is not one of them.

Cullen said the company's senior management chose the 87 after reviewing its portfolio. "There is not a singular reason why they are closing," she said.

Vornado Realty bought Toys "R' Us last year in a partnership with private equity firms Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. and Bain Capital Partners LLC. At the time of the acquisition last summer, Vornado said store closings would be considered.

The news of Toys "R' Us's imminent departure was unexpected, said Ronald Anderluh, the mall's general manager. "It's always a loss to see a tenant and jobs lost."

But James Anthony Jr., whose company, Oberlin Plaza One, owns the mall, said Toys "R' Us, still has 13 years remaining on its lease obligation. He said he is confident the 30,000-square-foot space will be subleased: both the mall and the toy retailer will seek tenants, he said.

"We're not financially impacted by it," Anthony said of the toy store's planned closing. Toys "R' Us requires the mall owner's approval of any tenant it wants to bring into the property, he noted.

The Wheatfield store has 27 full- and part-time employees, Cullen said. Not all of the employees will necessarily lose their jobs, Cullen said: in regions where it is possible, the chain will try to offer the workers other job opportunities.

The Wheatfield location will not accept returns of items bought during the inventory liquidation, Toys "R' Us said. But customers will be permitted to return any items, with a receipt, that they bought before the start of the liquidation sale.
