TOYS `R US READY TO JOIN THE GAME IN AKRON
Toys `R Us, a Rochelle Park, N.J., company with nearly 300 stores worldwide, plans to open about 60 more toystores before Christmas, including Akron area stores on Romig and Howe roads within roller-skating distance of a major competitor, Children's Palace.Other Ohio stores are scheduled to open this year in Niles, Parma, Mentor and North Randall.Toys `R Us senior vice president Michael Miller said his company would have located stores where they are going no...

2 TOYS R' US STORES MOVE INTO N.E. OHIO
Finding special toys for Christmas presents might be easier this year in Northeast Ohio as five Toys R' Us stores are scheduled to be open by early October. The toy retailer's move into Northeast Ohio will include two stores in the Akron area that will compete directly with Children's Palace stores.`They were there first and we intentionally went there,' said Toys R' Us spokesman Harvey Finkel, referring to the...

so they did not open in a lot of parts in ohio until 1986. It seems Child world's Children's palace was the main store there!! I wonder when Toys r us started opening stores. it said it became public in 1978 and the store in Albany new york told me it opened in 1978 when I asked this woman with a tag that said been there since 1978 and the framingham retail website says toys r us opened in 1978.

and Toys r us only entered the Danver market in june 1990

Child World's five Children's Palace Colorado stores closed September 15 following store-wide liquidation sales. The move is seen by local industry observers as the result of an aggressive Toys "R" Us stance since the Paramus, New Jersey-based successful toy retailer entered the Denver market in June, 1990.

A Toys "R" Us spokesman told Children's Business that company executives are so bearish on Colorado they are exploring the possibility of opening a Kids "R" Us retail clothing division store here. Toys "R" Us stores are in Boulder, Aurora, ...

posted on 10/1/2006 at 14:56 I list as many toys r us' as I gathered and it seems that a lot of the ones on the closing block are ones that opened in the 1992-1993 area.  I have a theory on why many of these 1991-1994 era stores are closing, they built them smaller than the older ones (The older ones built in the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s were in the 40,000s-48,000 squrae efet and the newer ones, built in early-mid 1990s were in the early 30,000s of square feet) and building the newer ones smaller was a mistake. I Bet the ones closing in markets liek colarado springs are closing because they wbere way too small (maybe in the 20000s square feet range) and the area isn't exactly thriving.

They are closing only one geoffrey store. it is in alebine texas. I am surprised it is closing. the article of the geoffrey clsoing store said if it was as popular as it was on Sunday (during the closing sale), it might not have closed. I bet no matter what it wasn't very busy.

As have said before it is not uncommon for a chain to close newer stores in a mass purge. The reasons are that newer stores can be a lot to operate, opening there was a disaster. The older ones seem to be safer bceause they have been around long enough to build up costumers and made the cut off long ago. then Toys r us may have been trying to fill in the void left by child world.

I am surprised the oen in Concord new hampshire is not closing. IT is a smaller store, stuff there does not seem to move, not very many people go to it (Last August on the 20 somethign  I went there at 6pm and there were 12 cars, the no one was at the cash registers, and only a few other customers where there and I went to the one in manchester an hour later and that had 27 cars and people there) and it is badly managed and not well stocked and manchester's store is 20 minutes away, but there are toll booths between. But it is on the road as other stores and the road it is on is a thriving area as it just got dick's sporting goods and a few other restuarants. the store in concord is probably in the early 30,000s of square feet. (I know the one in bellingham mass, which will not close, is 33,800 square feet and it was laid out exactly like concord. The one in concord is probably 32,000 square feet!  a lot of the kids in my college says the one in concord is usually dead, not very busy etc and one i know that works their said they store barley sells anything at night. maybe improvements can be seen> I remember when this store opened in early november 1992. it is the only toy store left in concord as kb toys clsoed in the mall 5 years ago (it was kicked out to get a temporary mall entrance)

for the boston ones, boston is one of their major markets. yet they are closing the ones in Cambridge (No surprise as it is not in a very good location and small!!! and 35,000 square feet in part of a former ames/zayre), medford (no surprise as it is smaller store opened in late 1992, it was probably in the mid 30,000s of squrae feet, was a child world and the plaza is dying and the plaza is in not a major shopping area) and Boston/Dorchester (South  BAy plaza and opened in november 1993, the store seemed somewhat big, it seemd small to my dad and said to be 46,000 square feet, SOMEONE I KNOW SAID THE STORE WAS NOT USED A LOT, but it is hard to rely on college students but she lives not far from there, and the South Bay Plaza store closing in Boston/Dorchester is in a plaza with Target that replaced a K-mart that closed 3 years ago, a STop and Shop that relocated from one and the old stop and shop will become Circuit city and bed bath and beyond, Old navy taht was added in 1998, home depot that was added in 1998, marshalls, officemax and the plaza will be added with a few more and an applebe's and olive garden will get added, I gues the toys r us in dorchester/boston did not get used a lot as to why they are closing in a thriving plaza and FAo swartz 3 miles away closed).

The one in Revere cloesd a year ago because its lease expired and it opened in 1988 or 1989, it was 44,400 square feet and it had the old school design though they only repainted it white and did not remodel the front. it was 5.5 miles away from the one in medford and 10 miles from the one in peabody.

the ones left around boston are in Woburn, Peabody, Dedham, Brockton and Framingham. but the one in Woburn is 3 miles south of the highway on Rt.3A, the store had the old school design (Brown with rainbow colored entrance) and in a plaza with Star market and rinky dink stores, but the store was HUGE and when I went in there 6 years ago, some shelves were half empty and I gues the one in WOBURN has higher sales. it said the one in woburn is 48,000 square feet.

the nearest ones to the closing ones:

Dorchester/Boston: Dedham mass on Providence HWy (9 miles away without highway and going through boston)

Cambridge: Woburn mass which is 6.5 miles away.

MEdford: Woburn mass which is 7.2 miles away.

the 36,000 square foot Holyoke store that opened in late november 1995 (I remeber the store having a crappy exit to the store) will become BAbies r us. The nearest other Toys r us store is in springfield on boston st and that is 14 miles away. The sTORE in Springfield was big, probably very early 40,000s of square feet, and opened in 1980 and is white. IT was probably remodeled in the 1990s. You can tell, some brown lining is in teh side of the store wehre the side says Toys r us lettering.

These toys r us' are in areas where another toys r us can be found, but my dad said not everyone will go to the next one. I guess they will go to those toys r us' to get something special or something they cannot get at wal-mart or Target. there are not very many wal-marts around boston!

It seems not many around northern boston will be left. THE PROBLEM WITH THE BOSTON STORES IS THAT MANY OF THEM ARE ON OFF MALL LOCATIONS and not in major retail areas. the 3 closing around boston were built in 1992-1993. but again BOSTON IS ONE OF TOYS R US' MAJOR MARKETS!!! the ones left: Woburn (I mention that paragraphs above, why didn't they just have it around the burlington mall as it is 4 miles from it,according to store nuimber it opened in the 1970s, it had the 70s look the store was somewhat out in the middle of no where); peabody seems to have been the first around boston acording to the store number and it is decent sized (maybe like very early 40000s of square feet) and in the parking lot of the northshore mall and is white (I first saw it in 1992 and it was old school looking (The brown look) and according to the store number it opened in teh 1970s; Dedham (a little up the road from the Dedham mall that is turned into a power center, store was dcent sized and maybe in the early 40000s of square feet (it seemd smaller inside as the they reformated the stoer a few years ago, the outside you can tell it is big) according to the store number dedham opened 1979 or around there) and the one in Dedham is purple and remodeled like the one in NAUNET NEW YORK a little over 3 yeras ago but on the left side of the road you have to go down south to a turnaround due to a median strip!); Framingham (In shoppers world, and rebuilt into the newer shoppers world in 1994 and the odler store was built in 1978, I KNOW SOMEONE WHO ONCE WORKED THERE AND I WAS TOLD IT IS THE BUSIEST TOYS R US IN NEW ENGLAND, well thats because its on rt. 9 with all other major stores and on the crossroads to Boston-Worcester and the store is 45,000 square feet); Brockton (near the WEstgate mall on the road that goes from the WEstgate mall to the road that goes to WAl-mart, the store opeend in 1991, 40,000 square feet); I have been to EVERY TOYS R US IN MASSACHUSETTS!! Is any of you surprised the one in Swansea mass;WHICH OPENED IN 1981 and is 43,000 square feet; did not close. I knew someone that worked for north attleboro (I went to that store last summer, that store opened 1991 and 45,000 square feet, is white acorss emerald square adn decently busy and HE last worked there in 1998; he was the bookstore manager of my college; and said Attleboro made 10 million and Warwick RI very busy, one of the major stores and that made 14-15 million). HE said Swansea was not so busy and thought it would close, he said swansea is an older store and others you could go to (Dartmouth 15-20 miles away, but that one is small, 30000 square feet opened 1996; WArwick 20 miles away; north attleboro 20 minutse away). But I WENT TO THE TOYS R US IN SWANSEA LAST SUMMER on a sunday at 11:15-11:30 am and people were already in the store and the parking lot was of like 25 cars. IT was busier than he said. The one in Swansea looked to have had a cheap paint job as where the front area where it says Toys r us Would have been brown was purple, the black glass exit way was, and the entrance said Children's bargain town in white letterign and background area (The older style ones had it say children's bargain town in black lettering in a orange background area) and the entrance way was old school, but they repainted the rainbow colors around the entrance way white but they area where the rainbow colors were lingers as lines go down and you could tell where the rainbow color entrance was.  the swansea store was big and nice. It probably got the paint job a few years ago. It is near a not so good mall. True you can go to others nearby. I thought that toys r us would be worse than what I saw because of what he said and that it is near Fall River, a scummy area of mass.

Bellingham store is 25 minutes from north attleboro and that opened in fall 1996 and is 33,800 square feet but in a major plaza with home depot. The one in leominster opened in october 1992 in the old market basket in the searstown mall and is white. the one in kingston mass; near plymouth mass; opened near the car dealers that is near the independance mall and that toys r us opened in 1991, but it was white and small like concord and not well stocked and not as busy as it was when it opened. The one in hyannis repalced a 36,000 square foot Child World in summer 1993. acodring to the store numbers the one in Auburn mass seemed to be the 2nd store in mass, but that store was HUGE AND WHITE AND VERY BUSY and across the Auburn mall, it was probably remodeled and is 25 minutes from the one in leominster mass. the one that closed in revere is 44,400 square feet and did open like maybe 1988 and the only paint job was the brown where it says toys r us got repainted white, but the outside stayed the same style and the store had a long entrance way, the store was busy and the article of it closing said it did very well, it clsoed due to the lease, I mention the other nearest toys r us' to it.
What do you all think?
The child worlds that used to be around boston: Medford (WHere toys r us is), SAugus plaza, Danvers in the liberty tree mall parking lot, Dedham in the dedham mall parking lot where Circuit city is, Quincy and Framingham. child world stores were in the 30000s of square foot or even the late 20000s square feet. number of toys r us' in mass wnet from 19-14. revere closing a year ago made it go down to 18 nd thse 4 closings will make it go to 14.
My fav toys r us' design is the ones were they were remodeled to concept 2000- departments lableed, nice flooring, glass windows with yellow titnted windows and is blue above the glass windows and the 1/4 left and right sides of the store are greyish white. That is my fav look. I like the old school look about as much because those Toys r us' with that looks is now rare species and remindes of me of the days when I went to Toys r us younger and that format is itneresting. The white look has gotten stale with me, as most toys r us' look that way and I do not find it as colorful.

here is an Idea, from the shape of the store that is shown on the picture displayed, on what Swansea may have looked like before it got its cheap remodeling.

Most toys r us' have been annouced to be scheduled to close early spring. a lot of articles say march 8.

WHEN DID TOYS R US OPEN STORES FIRST!!!!! IT says they became public company in 1978, WHEN DID THEY OPEN STORES. Toys r us was expanding more in the 1980s and expanded more in the early-mid 1990s!!! they opened a lot more in the early 1990s!! but in around 1998 they were stopping opening new ones. they were founded 1948. I am confused when they started, something said the one in colma california opened in october 1971
the one in saginaw opened in october 1979

But the one in Albany new york (STORE #6314) opened in 1978

- WArwick RI is store number 7502 (terra server showed the outline of the land and the outline was dated from 1976 and it did not show Toys r us' spot) I know someoen who lived in conventry and moved out in 1977 and barley remembers toys r us, toys r us must have opened in warwick in 1977 or 1978.
- Peabody mass is store numer 7503
- Auburn mass is store number 7504
- Framingham mass is store number 7505 and opened in 1978
- Woburn is store number 7506
- Dedham is store number 7507
- Springfield mass is store number 7508 and opened 1980
- waterbury's original location (The new one still has the same store number but it opened fall 1997) is store number 7510
- West hartford connecticut is store number 7511
- Manchester new hampshire is store number 7511 and opeend mid july 1981
- Swansea mass is store number 7512 and probably opened around Fall 1981
-Portland Maine is store number 7513 and opened in 1981 or 1982 or 1983, according to fire department things on the store's wall
- Newington/Portsmouth New hampshjire is store number 7514, but a woman working there told me she remembers taking her kids there in the 70s.
