The Cape Cod Mall opened in July of 1970 with Filene's, Sears and Woolworth as anchors and around 40 original tenants (of which only Sears, CVS and the mall barbershop remain to this day, all the rest have been replaced over the years).

In 1977, Filene's was expanded to 2 levels (80,000 square feet total, still somewhat small) making it the first location on Cape Cod with escalators.

In 1978, an additional wing was added to the back of the mall with about 20 additional stores and a fourth anchor, Jordan Marsh (130,000 square feet).

Sometime in the mid 1980s the interior of the mall was updated (it had been a retro stone and brick interior with orange and brown ceilings and walls up to that point).

Woolworth left the mall in 1993, prior to the chain folding in 1997.

In 1996, Jordan Marsh became Macy's.

Starting in 1998, the entire mall was renovated once again, and another wing was added from the closed Woolworth space with around 40 additional stores, including Best Buy, Marshalls, a 2 story Barnes and Noble and a 500 seat food court with 12 vendors.

Filene's closed in early 2006 after the merger with Macy's.  It is to become the mall's 2nd Macy's store in April 2007.  It will house the women's department.  The existing Macy's will house the men's, children's and home furnishings.

The mall currently has a total of 850,000 square feet.
