this mall called the walden galleria mall was built may 1989 and is in cheektowaga new york near buffalo and off the NEW york route 90 off exit 52. the mall is 2 levels. The mall has over 200 stores and a 12 restuarant international food court. the mall then had a a 150,000 square foot JC penny, a 150,000 square foot store that became Bon-ton and a chain that became KAuffmann's. the 82,000 square foot lechmere and 90,000 square foot Lord and taylor opened 1991. warner brothers studio store opened in summer 1993 and closed in 2001 with the rest. lechmere closed in late 1997 and became JC penny home store that became Galynn's sports in 2000. Galynn's became Dick's sporting goods in 2005. KAuffmann's home store is in the mall. the 150,000 square foot sears was built in 1999. Bed, Bath and Beyond, DSw Shoes and Old navy opened in the mall. talks are coming of putting Dave and Busters. this mall hurt the smaller and older malls around buffalo and is the major mall in the area, like crossgates is to albany area and carousel is to syracuse, and largest one in the Buffalo area and Western new york. The mall is 1.7 mill square feet. it says 57 of the 200 stores in the mall are still around. Bon-ton closed late january 2006. AMC cinema closed and will become a 50,000 squrae foot Best buy in the summer 2006. A 46,000 square foot Barnes and noble will open October 2006. Kauffmann's will become MAcy's in 2006.

Actually, the only original anchors that are still at the mall, are Sears and JCPenney. All the other current anchors were ethier not there, or something else at the time the mall opened. The Bon Ton(now closed) was first an AM&A's store(for a brief time), Kaufmann's a Sibley's, and the Old Navy/Bed Bath and Beyond area was a Bonwit Teller. Also, there was a Lechmere(now Steve and Barry's and DSW(was for awhile a JCPenney Home Store). Lord and Taylor and Galyans were added on later. Lord and Taylor is expected to close soon, and Kaufmanns is expected to become Macy's. Also, Galyans was recently bought by Dick's Sporting Goods.

i think they will still be around i just  think some locations might be slod to outher stores like dillard or nordstrom maby JC Penny or Neaman Marcus

Correct - the original anchors at Walden Galleria were Sibley's (actually opened in 1988, a few months prior to the May 1989 grand opening of the mall, JCPenney, Bonwit Teller, and Sears.  B. Altman was to open at this time too, but as the Galleria was opening, Altman's was going out of business.  The spot sat empty for almost two years and then became AM&A's.  In early 1995 it became The Bon-Ton, which just recently closed.  

Best Buy is not going where the theaters are.  They are actually still open as Regal Cinema.  Best Buy is going to be located on the first floor near Sears in the current Limited location.  Limited is moving to smaller quarters elsewhere in the mall.  About 15,000 square feet is going to be added to accommodate Best Buy's needs.  

An article in The Buffalo News the other day stated that Lord & Taylor is planning on staying open at Galleria.

Two new free-standing structures measuring a combined 80,302 square feet, a new 60-foot tall parking ramp, 260,000 square feet of redeveloped existing retail space, and an "urban streetscape causeway" are among features included in an application filed by Walden Galleria officals with the town last month.

According to the mall's development review application, provided to the Times on Wednesday afternoon, all construction will occur within the limits of the existing shopping center's 90.5-acre property.

"The project plan includes an emphasis on restaurants, entertainment, books, music and retail uses," states the document, filed by Walden Galleria General Manager James L. Soos.

Mall officials hope to begin work by May, with completion by November.

A multilevel parking ramp on the north end of the property, near the food court and Regal Cinemas entrance, will be razed in favor of the two stand-alone buildings, which will be primarily used for restaurant and entertainment tenants.

A new 73,800 square-foot parking ramp to accommodate 1,200 vehicles is planned for the northeast corner, near the former Bon Ton department store.

The two new buildings will form the north side of a tree-lined "Main Street" that will run between the new buildings and the main mall.

An engineering report submitted to the town by the mall states, "The cornerstone of the proposed 'Main Street' concept is the creation of a pedestrian promenade."

The promenade will incorporate wide pedestrian walkways, limited parallel parking, valet parking, outdoor seating, streetscape features, landscaping and ornamental lighting.

"It's really impressive, from the illustrations we've seen," said Dan Ulatowski of the Cheektowaga Building and Inspections Department. "It's pretty exciting. Architecturally, it's going to be a vast improvement."

The main street will end at a new traffic signal at Galleria Drive, between two existing signalized intersections where Galleria Drive meets the west and east ends of the mall's ring road.

In order to begin, the project needs site plan approval from the Town Board and a variance from the Cheektowaga Zoning Board for its building height.

The mall also remains committed to improvements that the town has requested since it first applied for expansion in 2001.

For example, a sidewalk will be installed along the north side of Galleria Drive from a Target department store, east to Union Road. An exit from a United States Post Office branch onto Galleria will be closed, and the exit relocated to the east ring road.

The expansion was discussed at Wednesday morning's meeting of the Town Environmental Advisory Committee, and is on tonight's Planning Board agenda. The Planning Board meets at 7:30 p.m. in Town Hall.

The highly anticipated plans are a scaled-down version of what mall officials had considered since they first announced their desire to expand in 2001. Initial plans called for adding up to 650,000 "leasable" space and two four-level parking garages.

Officials had also discussed a "theatery," which would have been a segment of the mall offering dining options and entertainment-related stores and theaters.

The area's largest mall, Walden Galleria opened in 1989 and currently has five anchor tenants among its roughly 200 stores.

Officials from Walden Galleria and its Syracuse-based parent company, The Pyramid Company, could not be reached for comment.

The mall sits on the border of the Cheektowaga Central and Maryvale school districts. Most of the new development will occur on the Maryvale side.

That's right and biggest loss for Walden Galleria since this thread started was Sears, also some of the other stores that have left Galleria Mall in recent years were Aeropostale and Ruum American Kid's Wear.

Not entirely sure. Something tells me that they were in a different spot. Their space does look awfully similar to a BBB store, albeit with 2 levels.

Not entirely sure. Something tells me that they were in a different spot. Their space does look awfully similar to a BBB store, albeit with 2 levels.

IIRC Bed Bath and Beyond was where Best Buy is now.
