In 1989 Penn Traffic Company purchased Big Bear and operated as a division of Penn Traffic. Big Bear Plus was a format created when many former Harts stores and Big Bear stores were combined to create both a retailer and grocery. Big Bear Plus was the result of the combination and they were, in my oppinion the frist to successfully pull off such a huge goal way before the Wal*Mart SuperCenters of the current day.

Penn Traffic pratically ran a good chain into the ground

how mand square feet was big bear plus did they have a electronics department

Big Bear Plus usually had 90,000 to 120,000 square feet, althought some were bigger or smaller. I was never in one and was wondering exactly what 'general merchandice' they did stock too.

What's there now??

It appears to be an Anytime Fitness now, with the former Ames being a Magic Mart. I haven't been back to Hurricane since I took those photos nine years ago.

Looks like 20ish stores in VA/WV/NC/KY with some of everything, kind of similar to an Ames (clothes, food, furniture, household, auto, paint and more in the current ad).
