Apparently part of these stores are up for lease.  Sears is willing to downsize the stores to lease sometime more than half of the space to another retailer!

(I spent time in an area of Michigan where the nearest store was a 35 mile drive,
and the nearest mall was 3 hours away!  It's why Ames went into the state....a lot
of areas with sparse competition.)

what of Walmart coming in? Among areas w that is Guam, Virgin ISlands, Madawaska ME, Palmer MA, Hyannis Mass, Great Barrington MA, Sidney NY, Greenwich NY, Alliance NEBRASKA, some places in Iowa. The FLORIDA KEYS, some place in Wisconsin, WAtertown Ct, Hamilton MT, Glendive MT and this place in California near the ARizona Border

the remaining 40-50K Kmarts, almost all of them are in no WAlmart towns, well if there was a WAlmart theyd be GONE as Kmarts that size cannot compete with anyone and hense why those stores were the first to go, 20 years ago and almost 10 years before Bankruptcy and Eddie Lambert days.

Either could happen (or even something else).  All one has to do is look at the northern sections of New York state (places like Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake and similar) to see a number of towns that once had an Ames and many of which no longer have that type of store after Ames closed up, thus requiring lengthy travel to find some items.

On the other side, some of those places might be able to attract a Walmart - not necessarily huge areas, but far enough from others that they might be interested in them (and possibly even the Kmart stores themselves - while the couple you mention I know of aren't huge - Great Barrington particularly - if there is not an option to build (local rulings and such) they have been known to alter their format.  One only has to travel up Route 7 into Bennington VT to see that Walmart took over a 5&10 building in order to get into that area.

Finally, there is always the option that something else will pop up - they did try that in a couple of the northern NY areas with WiseBuys (and the expansion of Hackett's, a local hardware store turned general store) but then got a bit over their heads merging and expanding too quickly.  But you do have successful smaller store chains (look at ShopKo with their Hometown operations) so there is always a possibility of a similar operation popping up elsewhere (one wonders if Ames could have been successful doing just that, had they been able to get rid of existing debts and stores in more competitive areas).

but will Walmart come to those places just a smaller store? like they have a small Supercenter in Berlin VERMONT and Mexico Maine. and how come Great Barringtons store is open till only 6 pm sundays the rest of the week 9-9?

also I went to Rochesters in NH on EAster and I asked if they are closing and they said they were told their store is sound and is not closing, whats that mean? I said yet I went to one in Daytona Beach thats closing and they said we arent in that round. Whats that mean? its in the Lilac mall and one of the 4 left in NH (Salem, Hooksett, Lebanon and Rochester remain). we had one in Laconia at one pt (I live there now), it was smaller than the one in Portsmouth that closed, if that surprises you?

The Sears Hardware in North Windham CT has closed. Not sure when it closed, had to have been within the past couple months. I'm not sure how it even lasted as long as it did. There was never anyone in the store. Had to have been bleeding money for years.

I'd predict that, upon Kmart's closure, Walmart will be in the Stevensville, MD store so fast it would make your head spin. Excellent location in an affluent area, and a long ride to the nearest Wally World. The county zoning board locked Walmart out long ago, and the Kmart building would be their only way in. Neighboring Kent county did the same thing as Queen Anne county (and they have no discount department store at all.) Talbot county has only a "regular" Walmart, old and unable to expand even a square inch, but a small store is better than nothing and the zoning board saw to it that what they have is all they'll get.

I believe somebody who has the entrepreneurial spirit will reopen closed KMarts in small towns...Wise buys was good but someone decided to expand. I would love to open 4 Sawhills in small towns (Sanford, Maine would be one town).

Makes sense that they would choose that one if they were going to pick one of the two, since the Kmart is the only one remaining in the greater Albany area (not counting the couple on the fringes in Saratoga or Warren counties)while there are more other Sears locations in the area.

That last article was interesting-I didn't realize they ever got OUT of the paint business! Shows how much attention I pay Sears. And Kenmore TV's, Die Hard tires? Sounds like a good way to burn up whatever reputation those names still have.

Regarding the new logo at Danbury, in the early 80's they used a similar logo on the catalog one year.

Could Sears Canada possibly be positioning itself to survive as a stand-alone company

Years ago Tractor Supply divested itself of its Canadian stores (which continue to operate
under that name as a separate chain under local management).  The reason was Canadian
government restrictions in place on taking profits back out of the country.

I believe this has changed however under more recent governments.
The logo indicates to me that they have market research indicating that Canadian
shoppers would like to patronize stores that are distinctly Canadian.

Sears at the Staten Island Mall is downsizing. Primark will open on what was the 2nd floor of Sears. The former Auto Center is becoming The Container Store.
