The XFL and USFL, two pro football leagues playing a Spring schedule, have announced their intention to merge.

The XFL is owned by a consortium headed by Duane "The Rock" Johnson and his ex-wife, investment banker Dany Garcia. The USFL is owned by Fox Sports.  The biggest question appears to be whether or not games will be played in the actual cities for those franchises.  The XFL has been playing games onsite in the home cities.  The USFL had been playing all games in pod sites (Birmingham, AL, Canton, OH, Detroit and Memphis).  Both leagues have a Houston franchise, which will need to be addressed.  The USFL has a New York area franchise, a market the XFL opted to exit. Reports are that the XFL was already looking to get out of Las Vegas due to a combination of low attendance and stadium issues.

Likely at least one of the two leagues was not going to survive in the long run in any case.
