Amazingly, the Ames on Central Ave. in Dover, New Hampshire hasn't had a new permanent tenant since they liquidated. I verified its empty status last night when I visited the Papa Gino's (for what might be the last time - who knows.) I didn't detect a labelscar. The Hannaford next door (they own the plaza) has been renovated and had a grand re-opening in 2017.

I saw it vacant last year and the lettering was gone. I live an hour north of there in Laconia, NH

The one in SEabrook NH is vacant too.

I think you're right that this space never had any new permanent tenant since Ames closed. Not too sure why. In Dover you also have the Indian Brook Commons shopping center where a large vacant lot was never developed.

The proximity to Newington to the south and Rochester to the North can be a factor.
