Shop 'n Save entered the South Central PA/Western Maryland/Northwest Virginia/WV Eastern Panhandle area via the ex-Food Lion locations divested in the Ahold Delhaize merger. The original plan was for Supervalu to own these then spin them off to franchisees but that plan never came to fruition.

When this was announced, I thought that Giant Eagle missed a key chance to build their Maryland presence, even with just a couple of stores, and I stand by this at least on the Hagerstown and Winchester/Eastern Panhandle areas. Chambersburg and Waynesboro would be a huge problem with Giant Carlisle d/b/a Giant in those areas vs. Martin's.
