The American Wendy's chain once had hamburger restaurants in Australia in 1970s and 1980s. Wendy's Hamburger Restaurants of Australia were in debt by 1986, and most of their locations were taken over by Australia's Burger King franchisee, Hungry Jack's.

It appears that the American Wendy's chain took on the identity of "Wendy's Hamburger Restaurant" to avoid confusion with the Australian ice cream chain "Wendy's Supa Sundaes."

I didn't know that the American Wendy's chain was in Australia at one point.

I wonder why the Aussies did not take to Wendy's hamburgers?

Maybe because they didn't adapt to the market?  For example toppings.
I understand that a slice of pickled beet is a popular burger topping down there.

Wendy's was in the UK, too; I remember eating at one in London back in the 1990s. They were in the UK from 1980-1986 and again from 1992-2000. They set up a pop-up location in 2017 amid speculation that they were going to try again but so far nothing has come of it.
