Macy's to shutter 14 stores this spring

Macy's did their annual store-closing announcements today. This year's list has the following stores:

Metro Center, Phoenix, AZ (107,000 square feet; opened in 1973; 88 associates) (former Goldwaters, Robinson's and Robinson's-May);
Cupertino Square Mall, Cupertino, CA (177,000 square feet; opened in 1997; 111 associates) (former The Emporium);
Promenade (main store), Woodland Hills, CA (192,000 square feet; opened in 1993; 112 associates) (former Robinson's and Bullock's);
Promenade (furniture gallery), Woodland Hills, CA (81,000 square feet; opened in 1993; 19 associates) (former Bullock's Wilshire, I. Magnin and Bullock's Men's Store);
Gulf View Square, Port Richey, FL (84,000 square feet; opened in 1981; 78 associates) (former Maas Brothers and Burdine's);
Northland Center, Southfield, MI (504,000 square feet; opened in 1954; 170 associates) (former Hudson's and Marshall Field's);
Wendover, Greensboro, NC (141,000 square feet; opened in 2002; 83 associates) (former Hecht's);
Ledgewood Mall, Ledgewood, NJ (73,000 square feet; opened in 1994; 79 associates) (former Stern's);
ShoppingTown Mall, DeWitt, NY (120,000 square feet; opened in 1993; 94 associates) (former Kaufman's);
Rotterdam Square, Schenectady, NY (120,000 square feet; opened in 1995; 98 associates) (former Hess's and Filene's);
Kingsdale Shopping Center, Columbus, OH (108,000 square feet; opened in 1970; 115 associates) (former Lazarus);
Richmond Town Square, Richmond Heights, OH (165,000 square feet; opened in 1998; 105 associates) (always Macy's);
Upper Valley Mall, Springfield, OH (156,000 square feet; opened in 1971; 79 associates) (former Lazarus);
Southland Mall, Memphis, TN (150,000 square feet; opened in 1966; 112 associates) (former Goldsmith's).

Somewhat surprised Century III Mall in Pittsburgh was not on there.
Since Sears bugged out in November it's getting REAL sparse in there.

And yet they will be opening a new Macy's in Los Angeles in 2016 and a new BloomingDales in San Jose in 2017.

In NJ, the store that is closing is a former Stern's.  As far as the NY stores, 1 opened as Macy's, the other opened as Hess's, and then was Filene's.  And as far as the OH stores , 2 opened as Lazarus, the 3rd as Macy's

And Rotterdam mall edges ever closer to dead status...if Sears holdings goes out then they might as well pack it in maybe sell to Wal-Mart I am surprised the Macy's has been here this long since there is one like every 10 miles here.

Meanwhile, Northland Center is also on the verge of becoming dead sixty years after opening as Michigan's first mall...Target is already about to close, their food court is nearly completely vacant and if the new megachurch that's supposed to open in the long-vacant JCPenney fails, I guess whoever owns it now is left with no choice but to tear it down and probably sell the site to Walmart, as they've been longing to have a store in the city of Southfield (they came close once, but city council rejected it).

Honestly I'm surprised Macy's is still as big of retailer as it is. I can't for the life of me remember ever buying anything at Macy's..they are just a middle-of-the-road blah department store that sells just slightly fancier stuff than JCPenney or Kohl's.

I live about a half hour or so from the Rotterdam Macy's that's closing. I went to the Shoppingtown Mall once too. A shame that these malls are inching closer to being dead.

Honestly I'm surprised Macy's is still as big of retailer as it is. I can't for the life of me remember ever buying anything at Macy's..they are just a middle-of-the-road blah department store that sells just slightly fancier stuff than JCPenney or Kohl's.

Macy's is like middle class/ semi upper dept store and they sell decent things and have good sales and i think that's why they manage to do well.
