Yes, this sort of thing happens from time to time-you are watching a scheduled program when the station decides to insert a commercial break during the program.

Here are two examples that occurred in June 2013:

  • KXAN-TV, the NBC affiliate in Austin, Texas, was airing game four of the Stanley Cup Finals between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Boston Bruins. With exactly 10:12 left in overtime (and the game tied 5-5), KXAN suddenly cut to a commercial break which included a newscast promo, a commercial for a Kia dealership and a commercial for a veteran's organization. When they returned to the game, the Blackhawks were already celebrating their game-winning goal, which tied the series 2-2.
  • WJBK, the Fox O&O in Detroit, Michigan, suddenly inserted a commercial break not long after a scheduled network one during an episode of Masterchef. This break featured three promos, each separated by two commercials, the first for Cool-Aid and the second for Maaco. Even weirder, these exact same two commercials and three promos aired during the affiliate-insert part of the next network break! This happened on a Saturday at about 11:15 PM.

Sounds like a problem with the automation system. A lot of times stations don't have Master Control operators on duty 24/7 any more. >:(

Even better, when they cut to a commercial in the middle of the program, then back to the program halfway thru the commercial!

Seems to happen quite a bit around here on multiple stations.
