Sears and Penny's troubles mean the Death Knell for many malls

Article from the Wall Street Journal about how the large number of malls having both Sears
and Penny's as anchor tenants leaves them in a very precarious position.

The Westfield Meriden Square Mall in Meriden, Connecticut had both Sears and Penny's. Penny's closed a week and a half ago. The Mall wouldn't comment on the future of Sears, but said they weren't really worried about the closure of Penny's. They said they were certain they could divide up the space. It just make take a little time.

Gee I think that mall's trouble started when they made KMART a tenant. KMART's don't belong in a mall. Not now when they're on life support and dying. Not before when they were relatively healthy.

Kmart was the only thing that sustained Parkway Center Mall in Pittsburgh for the last
two decades of its existence.

It closed in January, 2013.   Same day as Kmart.

Try saying that about Kmart Australia and Kmart New Zealand. They have locations in their shopping malls. The Westfield Group owns lots of shopping malls in both countries that have Kmart stores as anchor tenants. Some are co-located with other discount stores, such as Target Australia and Big W in Australia, and The Warehouse in New Zealand.
