Family Dollar is closing 370 stores and will slow down the number of new stores they open beginning in 2015.

Thus Dollar General appears to be the winner of this battle.

Family Dollar has a LOT of stores in combat zones.
Would no doubt boost their bottom line just to close those and slash the shrink.

Bingo. I was just discussing with a fellow member of this website on Facebook. I was telling him here in CT a lot of the Family Dollar's and Dollar Generals are in bad areas.

The fact that they have stores near Dollar General might also be part of this since they are both pretty much the exact same store.

Most of the Dollar Generals in this area are in halfway decent suburbs (Baldwin, Crafton, Whitehall, Mt. Lebanon)

Family Dollar has stores in absolute combat areas (Beltzhoover, Mt. Oliver, Homestead, McKees Rocks)

Family Dollar has a store at 59 North Main Street in Bristol, CT. It's right down the street from the Police Department, but it's right by Bracket Park where there are a lot of drug dealing going on.

Dollar General is at 350 Divinity Street (despite their website saying 354) in Bristol, but the Divinity Street area isn't very nice. Lots of drugs in that area too. Also not really any other businesses in the area. It's mostly residential.

Family Dollar is in Lafayette Square on Myrtle Street in New Britain. Right near Lafayette Street. Lots of drug dealing and prostitution going on there.

Dollar General is either opening a store or has opened a store in Unity Plaza at 259 Barbour Street in Hartford, CT. Barbour Street is one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Hartford. - Stabbings, Shootings, and of course drugs.

So, stop by Family Dollar for some Doritos, a pair of socks, a bottle of shampoo and a hooker?   ???

Dollar General is expanding aggressively here in CT. They are building new buildings, and also doing total renovations of existing buildings. Its going to put a hurting on Family Dollar here real soon.

wish dollar tree would just buy them out already atleast they have the $$ to refurb some stores and set up locations in the ghetto where dollar tree is most needed...

I think the biggest problem is out of the 3 major dollar stores family dollar seems to be the most expensive and has the smallest selection. I  always looked at family dollar as an oversized convince store and not a real dollar store.

Tampa has about 20 FD stores. Some are in the ghetto, but some are in nice areas, too.
