I just found out this week that one of the last remaining Kroger "superstores" still operating as such as well as possibly the only superstore/greenhouse hybrid store still operating as a Kroger is now closing later this month (June 22 to be specific) in Woodhaven, MI. It is located just east of I-75 exit 32 at West and Allen Roads. That intersection already suffered a major blow this year when the Kmart closed and now that the Kroger store is closing, there will be major vacancies on the eastern half of that intersection.

And from that article, here's what a Kroger representative said on why this store is closing:

Quote from: the linked article“The store itself, along with sales transactions, population and growth in the surrounding area all played a factor into closing this location.”
???

Ironically, the closest Kroger to this closing one was a former Farmer Jack that was acquired by Kroger in 2007!

IGA/Kmart Is Forever!

What exactly is a Kroger "Superstore" and what is the difference between a Kroger "Superstore"  and a regular Kroger Supermarket. I never knew that there was such a thing as a Kroger "Superstore."

Ironically, I can understand why the closing of Kmart has caused the sales to go down in this retail area. Back in 2002 when my local Ames Department Store shut down when the Ames Department Store Chain decided to close it's doors, the closure of this Ames just killed the retail in the area that this Ames Department Store was sitting in, while at the same time allowed crime to skyrocket in this area. Crime that was originally west of this Ames Department Store moved east as the original location where this crime used to sit back in the 1980's/1990's was forced to move east, due to the fact that the original location of this crime began to rejuvenate itself. Sadly, Wal*Mart demolished this former Ames Department Store to build a Super Center and despite the fact that crime in this area has skyrocketed due to the closure of Ames people are still going into this Wal*Mart Super Center despite all of the crime that is there. I hope that the same thing doesn't happen in your neighborhood now that this Kroger "Superstore" is closing.

Last, but not least are there anymore Kroger "Superstores" left in the U.S.A. at all?

Actually, I live closer to the Kroger store in Southgate, MI (which will stay open), but I do hope that there's no massive crime increase at West and Allen Roads after this Kroger closes (especially if the criminals come all the way down here from Detroit!)

And below is a ten-year-old photo of the Kroger store that's the main topic of this thread and the accompanying caption (courtesy of this site):

Quote from: the linked websiteThis store is in Woodhaven, Michigan. As of early 2003, the exterior is still original to this day. The store is remarkable because it still has almost the complete original interior. If memory serves, the wall signs may have been repainted, since I don't think the colour scheme is original, but at least it still has them. The checkstand signs and the aisle signage are not original, however, but with the notable exception of the bottle return machines at the entrance it is like stepping back in time. What's more remarkable is that the rest of the shopping centre has been extensively remodeled.

As far as I heard, it appears that the "wall signs" were removed about five years ago. And the Kroger "superstore" was actually the name of the architectural style used on this and similar-vintage stores. I also heard that the shopping center was probably remodeled when Target opened there around 1995. But at least there are several other successful stores in that retail area, including the aforementioned Target, a Meijer, a Kohl's and a Walmart Supcercenter and they are all going well, I'm assuming. And to continue with the crime part, I've heard that recently, there were several thefts and even a murder that occurred at that Walmart Supercenter.

UPDATE: A Planet Fitness opened on October 13th in the former site of this Kroger.

Also, the murder I mentioned above wasn't a murder at all-just a hit-and-run incident.
