The past six decades all have been defined by their own musical styles and car designs. But what about retail? These are the establishments you might see in a real estate brochure from each time period:

1. 20's: Sears, Strawbridge & Clothier, Macy's

2. 50's: Lord & Taylor, Gimbels, Woolworth, Acme, A&P, Food Fair, Penn Fruit, STATE STORE

3. 60's: Penneys, Pathmark, Kmart, Ames, Woolco, Grant City, JM Fields, Two Guys, Zayre, Nichols, King's, Safeway, Rea & Derick, 7-Eleven, Wawa, Pizza Hut, Howard Johnson's, Mobil, Getty, Gulf

4. 70's: JCPenney, CVS, Rite Aid, Thrift Drug, Kroger, RadioShack, Cloth World, Bradlees, Clover, Hills, Denny's, Brazier Foods

5. 80's: Target, Caldor, Jamesway, Jefferson Ward, Venture, Linens N Things, Marshalls, Jo-Ann Fabrics, Barnes & Noble, Service Merchandise, Toys R Us/Kids R Us/Babies R Us, TJ Maxx, Ross Dress for Less, Office Depot, OfficeMax, Staples, Best Buy, Circuit City, Levitz Furniture, Filene's Basement, Bed Bath & Beyond, Dick's Sporting Goods, Modell's Sporting Goods, FuncoLand, Chuck E. Cheese's, Red Lobster, Home Depot, Genuardi's, Wal-Mart, Walgreens

I have thought about such ages of retail myself. There is a great deal of overlap; I see that in your 80s list which includes many names which were not a player in my area until the later 90s or even in the last decade. (I doubt, for instance, that most folks where I live realize the Target chain is many decades old)

Looking back I can see the locally owned retailers giving way to Sears and Woolworths; they in turn gave way to Ames and Kmart. Then came WalMart. Target seems to have put a dent in them but I don't think they are the "next big thing". What will it be? What will it look like?

On the grocery side, local merchants started getting moved out of the way in a big way by A&P and American Stores/Acme. Those stores were in decline by the 80s, after decades on top, to be replaced for a while around here by Meatland/Food City. Then Food Lion came to town, and then WalMart. Again, there was overlap. There were some 50s era IGA/Food Rite stores that stayed viable despite there being an Acme down the street, or a Meatland, but Food Lion proved devastating and effectively ended anything that remained from the old independent era.
