Because so much of Ames's growth happened when they bought stores from Hills, Zayre, King's, Murphy's Mart, Caldor, Jamesway, Gaylords, Nichols, Westons, Woolco, etc.

No two Ames were really the same. Their stores came in all shapes and sizes. But all of them had that 60's/70's charm.
