Ahold (owners of Stop & Shop) also owns two mid-Atlantic chains called Giant.  One is based in Landover, MD and its operations are merged with Stop & Shop.  The other is based in Carlisle, PA and is run separately.  Lately, though, there are signs that Giant-Carlisle's private label products are losing their distinctive logos.  Look at the cooler case and whipped topping photos in this very recent photostream:

Some private label products now carry the "Cornucopia of Doom" Giant logo.  Is this a sign of the two Giants slowly consolidating? (Hat tip: Remembering Retail group on Yahoo)

Some of the Stop & Shop brand products have just the logo on it and no longer feature the words Stop & Shop.

Are the pics of any examples of these 'brandless' products?

A very large majority of the S&S brand products that have been switched are like this.

Giant PA stores look more interesting than Stop & Shop signage wise.  Are the flickr photos representative of the newest Giant PA signage?  Eventually, I wonder whether all Ahold USA supermarkets will share the same name and have the colorful symbol as their logo.  It is comparable to the Target bullseye or arrows and Walmart sun.

The new giant stores in pa signage is indeed the red with black shadow logo still.
But the store brand is changing over to the fruit bowl look, as shown here.

Giant-Carlisle acknowledges the private label design change...does Christopher Brand's statement that there's no plan to change the store logos of Giaint-Carlisle or Martin's "at this time" mean anything?  It seems inevitable to me.  Guess we'll just have to wait and see...

It's a relief seeing pics of the Mount Joy store. When I heard they had come out with a new interior look, I figured they were getting stuck with the dreadful Stop and Shop/Giant MD interior. Turns out they are not. They do seem to be adopting a classier look and letting go of their cartoony styled signage.
Check it out... Acme Style!

The 50-year-old Abington PA store is closing, plus Foodsource in Bryn Mawr will be shuttered

The FoodSource (not sure what it used to be) was next to one of the oldest most preserved Acmes in the chain. Sadly Acme knocked it down to rebuild last year. You could see that store in the movie The Sixth Sense.

Anthony Hucker President of Giant of Landover has resigned.

Giant-Landover has a lot of stores in the DC area, which has been particularly affected by the sequester. Consumers are trading down. Another factor is a number of prescription medicines are coming off patent, and generics don't generate the same revenue.

Giant Food Stores LLC (Giant [PA]) announced this past Friday, October 4, that they will be closing it's location in Warrington, PA.  The store, located at 389 Easton Raod, was a former Genuardi's that Giant purchased in 2010.

Giant has 20 other stores in Bucks County, including stores nearby in New Britain Township, Warminster, and Plumstead.  Giant did say that affected employees will be offered positions at other markets.

Here's a free story about the Warrington closure; apparently this location has been an underperformer as both a Genuardi's and as a Giant.

Giant-Landover recently opened up a very nice store in Washington DC, in the former O Street Market building. The 78,000 sq ft store is the largest in DC, and has a full service bar inside the grocery store.

You can read a little more about this store, and see some photos, here:

Here's a question for our Giant-Landover fans...

The ShopRite in East Norriton, PA (near Norristown) is a former Giant-Landover store, and was also a Shop & Save before being sold to ShopRite.

The outside of this store says "We are the low price leader."

Does anyone know which chain used that slogan? I don't know of any other Giant-Landover stores that say that on the outside.

Is there anything stopping Giant-PA from expanding into Southern NJ? Unions? Stop&Shop claimed territory even though Stop&Shop doesn't serve South Jersey anymore?

Originally Ahold operated SuperG in Southern NJ, which ran a short life in the end as Stop&Shop. These were unionized stores that were eventually sold to ShopRite or closed.

However, the Giant-PA division is more prominent in the Philly market and South Jersey is just over a bridge.

I was thinking that the macy's which is closing in Moorestown might lead to some big box style development and maybe PREIT will seek a grocer tenant. Probably something small like Fresh Market, but why not Giant? Really Giant just operates a mere 30-45 minutes away in Bensalem and Burlington County, as mentioned, is over the bridge.

In the immediate Mt. Laurel/Moorestown area, there is competition
1. ShopRite East Gate Square - not a great ShopRite by any means
2. Acme in Maple Shade - nothing spectacular and likely in a weaker location
3. Future Super Walmart on 73
4. Kmart (may go out of business)

Yes, further east there is Wegmans, but I think Giant would be remarkably better than the 4 options that I listed and if it came to Moorestown Mall lot, it would be a better, more central location than some of these.

I'm not exactly sure how Union agreements work, but it might prevent Giant from opening non-union stores in a state (not just a region) with a Union operator under the same ownership.

Also, ShopRite pretty much dominates South Jersey (as well as Philadelphia) and I think they really have a hard time competing with them. Giant generally has lower every day pricing, but ShopRite's sales are pretty much unmatchable and really draws in a crowd. (Not to mention Wegmans with several south Jersey stores).

Giant also really doesn't seem to be in much of a growth mode. They have been closing down several (usually older) 'unprofitable' stores over the past year or two (a few in Lancaster announced last week). And just recently, they reduced the hours at all but their very top performers from 24 Hour operations to a 6AM-Midnight schedule. They have cut back on a lot of prepared foods and that kind of thing and their stores are no longer inviting, IMO...they have just become average and 'Walmart-like', especially since Stop & Shop/Martin's/Giant MD/PA are pretty much being treated as a single company now with different logos).
