Its too bad they don't expand into CT/WMASS

They're pretty disciplined about expansion and have limited distribution capacity. Right now they're concerned with filling in existing territories and expansion into contiguous areas. They aren't even in the Worcester area in any major way. And of course there's the ongoing battle between Arthur T. and the board which has brought expansion virtually to a halt.

I just hope they'll get it settled.

Are workers' hours being trimmed to finance price cuts?

With all the Obamacare-related hour cut since somehow it defines full time as 10 hours/week less than what the US had done for 80 years prior, this may be an easier way to break it to the press. One smaller Northeastern chain openly played that card and has cut hours due to decreased store budgets as their sales are down.

Here's a novel development - the "A" stockholders are bringing a lawsuit:
http://supermarketnews.com/retail-financial/demoulas-board-squabble-leads-new-suit

And the "B" stockholder-friendly website has its view of recent events:

And now there is talk of the company's real estate holdings being sold off
http://wearemarketbasket.com/carleton-and-shea-file-suit/

And a developer with family ties to Arthur T. is suing the company:

Another big loss in court for the good guys today - next meeting is Monday, and a sense of doom is taking over

Stork of The Weak

Is this the same Market Basket found in Louisiana?

Very sad...

It is, but it's ultimately Mike's side of the family's fault that this happened in the first place. Mike cared about the business, but he was greedy, too:

Hell has frozen over - Market Basket has an official website! Not surprisingly, no social media component whatsoever.

Unbelievable!

Sales are down 70%.

They even had a story about this on the local NBC 30 News here in Hartford.

It was also interesting seeing a story on the Spanish language local news on Univision 18 (which is produced in Boston).

And the protests continue. And Customers are joining in too.

NECN had a story this afternoon that a couple of MB employees want Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick to step in to end this.

Editor's note: This is a bad idea. Politicians should not get involved in private business's business. Plus MB has store outside of Massachusetts.

ynkeesfn82

They have eliminated all Part Time Employees Hours.

And the parent company of Hannaford has put in a bid for all or part of the chain.

Looks like the doomsday scenario is playing out, and I can't say I'm surprised. RIP Market Basket...

I hope A&P or ShopRite buy Market Basket. If either company buy Market Basket, either one would have stores across the Northeast.

A&P isn't in the position to buy anyone right now. I'd say A&P's likely to BE bought, but they're probably the lepers of the supermarket industry.

Shoprite would be a better fit, but the fact that they're a cooperative makes it hard to find a lot of qualified owners to run groups of stores. But hey, there's at least one qualified supermarket owner without a job right now but will have money should MB be bought out...

They wouldn't need any "owners" - they could just be part of the SRS group (subsidiary of Wakefern itself) as 32 stores already are (and a good chunk of those were ones that were part of the "Big V" ownership in NY that went bankrupt and the company bought them out).

Not to say that they want to expand that much, but you never know.

When you are in the store locator on the ShopRite site, click on the store name - it takes you to whatever the ownership is (or at least this one did, since all our stores here in upstate NY are part of this group).
OK - I just tried looking at CT - and not all the stores work for this, but East Hartford, Manchester and Enfield do (to two different ownerships) - not sure how many others may.

Market Basket today issued a letter to 200 employees of their Distribution Center and Headquarters they have until Friday to return to work or be fired.
