I know this has been discussed before. But it seems an industry that is relatively new is in rapid decline. Not long ago, VHS tapes in a variety of colors were new. The sad part is, "adult" video shops seem to be growing. All these establishments I have seen close:

1. Springfield Video, my local video store. The place is now a Chinese restaurant!

2. Video Update, what seemed like a local chain. Now my nearest one is a state liquor store.

3. Movies Unlimited, which apparently is a website now. Their only store might have been the Broomall PA one, which lasted 25 years. Sure enough, this one became a state liquor store too...

4. Movie Gallery, of course. Too bad they had to have Hollywood Video go down with them. So did the local chain West Coast Video. There is a Christian group boycotting Movie Gallery because of their "adult" section at all locations. I doubt that has caused any real damage, but it can't help.

5. And the best for last, Blockbuster. Mine finally closed a couple weeks ago. All signs are already down. Someone crashed a car into this store one time. I will miss their ice cream... that is the strange thing about Blockbuster.

All the big chains seem to be closing gradually. The only independent video stores left seem to be "adult" ones. One of them is literally right next to my favorite bowling alley.

Yes. Video stores are soon to become a thing of the past... I think a lot of physical retail will eventually. Especially anything pertaining to physical media, because physical media is becoming obsolete.

I don't like it. I'm a product of the last century, and I find that I'm not taking too kindly to modernity. It's just one less reason for people to get out in the sun and really socialize, that they can "stream movies in HD directly to their iPhones!".  ::) /rant

From what I've heard supposedly Blockbuster is gonna go more toward having those kiosk machines instead of brick and mortar stores. Video rental stores have been a dying business for quite a few years now.

Agreed. Redbox/DVDXPRESS machines are popping up like candy.

I LOVE Redbox!!! I rent all the time, and since there's one at the Walmart by my pizza hut, I can drop it off the next day. Also, I bought Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince last week for 5 dollars!!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE Redbox Rentals!!!

The ones I recall near me
1) Video Update - closed became a West Coast Video, which closed too like 3 years ago I wanna say, now is a galaxy tans

2) West Coast Video - The one above like I said is closed, but the other one near me is still open, one thing tho for sure is its much smaller than it used to be, with hollywood tans taking up more and more room, this has an adult section ;)

3) Blockbuster - Well lets see, the one closed down a few years ago and now is a movie stop (This was near amc orleans 8), then one on frankford ave near solly ave is now becoming a advanced auto parts. and the one near me on frankford ave by knorr st, is still open, of course with blockbuster filing for bankruptcy we shall see how long this stays open.
Oh yea and a wawa near me (on frankford ave, lol a few blocks from the blockbuster still open) just got a blockbuster express machine outside.

I too am a fan of having a phyical copy of media, makes me feel like I got an actual copy. Even tho with cd's I just rip them to my laptop and they probably dont get played too much (well sometimes in my dvd player when i wanna hear it loud on my tv) and at this point I only am getting cd's of band I really like alot.

But I also want to bring up something else, when supermarket and other stores had videos for rent, that is definitely a thing of the past now, hell I remember pharmor near me had a big video and video game rental section (at least at the time as a kid it seemed big)
Of course now in supermarkets you will probably see some dvd's for sale at the beggining of the register line.

True, but both Stop & Shops in Bristol along with Price Chopper in Southington (not sure about Bristol) have Redbox. Walmart in Southington (may Bristol too?) had/has (not sure) Bluebox.

That too of course.
