New England chain of salvage stores. They take pride in how dirty and disorganized the places are. Once in awhile you can find a decent bargain, especially on furniture. Scratches can be hidden. Forget finding clothes, although I found a great and comfortable pair of $100 Skechers for only $25.

My local Building 19 stores

Pawtucket RI--in former grand stand of Narragansett Racetrack

Swansea Mass--former K-mart

Cumberland RI--former Ann & Hope

Cranston---former Ames which was a Zayre

Warwick--former K-mart, now closed and taken over by a car lot

see www.building19.com for more locations

I've got a picture I took of the very Building 19 (1/15?!) in Nashua from February 2007. I found a bevy of black 90's Caldor carts here too amongst other things (like the Theme from Goldfinger played on the store's musak)
All submitted photos were taken by myself unless stated otherwise.

I just found this online Wal-Mart Eyes Nashua, N.H., Location.

The Telegraph, Nashua, N.H. Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News

Apr. 18--NASHUA, N.H.--Wal-Mart is exploring whether to build one of its stores in Nashua, where Building 19 1/15 is located at 420 Amherst St., according to city officials.

Gerald Prunier, a Nashua land use attorney, came before the city's Conservation Commission Tuesday, for an informal discussion about replacing the existing Building 19 1/15 store with a Wal-Mart store, but there were no plans or application submitted, according to City Hall administrators.

There are wetland areas around the building and other environmentally sensitive areas near the building. Conservation Commission members are...

Here's an aerial view of the store.  It's clear that the space at right of the building was meant for another store or expansion.

I really wonder what was in there when this place was built.  It looks like some kind of hardware store or discount store, there's a fenced empty "garden center" in the left front corner.  The entrance is not where the church-type steeple top is but in the center of the store.  Also note the shapes of the building, the rear corner, the design on the exterior walls, the sidewalk with two round trees...

I'm sure there's a story behind that strange store, but what is it ??

jmcnamara96

i new it! it looked like a grocery store:bigsmile:now witch one?

I hope that they have contacted various enrvironmental groups such as Ducks Unlimited, etc. to help them out.  If the land has been designated as a protect wetlands, someone cannot come in and simply start building.  (I used to work for DU.)

I wish them luck since the last thing we need is another generic big box!

:yup:

jmcnamara96

big box stores ruin the environment and close small businesses

captjack

But in prospective, small business is always hurt by larger companies. Economies of scale are hard to fight. I am referring to the progression of retail history from my limited knowledge.
Downtown stores - Suburban stores - Open malls - closed malls - big box stand alone - power centers - Next? Internet? Mini power centers?
I guess this is why I find this subject so interesting having lived through these retail changes.
If anything is responsible for the death of many mom and pops, it would be our own buying habits. We control where are dollars go and it usually finds it's way to the lowest price. jack

Looks like a really interesting store -- reminds me a bit of this awesome place I went to in Wisconsin called American Science and Surplus, mixed with Marden's...is this part of a regional chain or a single store? I'm tempted to check it out sometime...

I first went there in 2005.   It reminds me a lot of Marden's.  They're a chain and also have a store in Manchester now.  I once wrote and e-mail to the company to find out if they were interested in opening stores in Maine, I received this reply:

"We have no current plans to expand into Maine.  My old friend Mickey Marden opened several similar stores in Maine.  They are not exactly the same, but they are pretty close.

I just got a email back from Jerry
Hello Joe,

I am sending your e-mail to Mr. Paul Kane the manager of our Nashua store.  I bet he would love to give you a tour.  Give him a phone call (603) 880-0119 and arrange it.

Before we leased that store it was occupied by a Builders Square, a Home Depot type operation.

The grocery store was taken over by Hampshire Farm "a division of Alexander's Supermarket" prior to it turning into Builders Square and then Building 19.

Found this info on Wikipedia
the original Building #19 moved to the Harborlight Mall in adjacent Weymouth. From Harborlight they moved back to Hingham, to the former GEM (Government Employee Merchandise) building on Derby Street. The main store is currently situated back in Weymouth at the old Caldor/Zayre's/Ames building on Route 18.

Lastdaysofrain

The Nashua NH location just announced it is going out of business. It's only the second Building 19 location I can think of that went under (the first being the one in the old Jordan Marsh at the Assembly Square Mall)

Talking to some of the employees it sounds like the landlord wouldn't renew their lease and wants to sell outright to a larger retailer (I think Walmart)
