It appears that the distribution center in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin is already open.
Yes. It is. And while I was watching some Milwaukee Brewers baseball games, I saw Meijer advertisements behind third base. I guess Meijer has stores in suburban Milwaukee already, and they are ready to expand further north, to places, like Green Bay, Wisconsin, where they plan to open two locations sometime in 2015 or 2016.

Well, I just checked the two links in that post you quoted-the Meijer store locator still only has Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio clickable and the map only has the Pleasant Prairie distribution center, that's it.

That's because they are in the planning stages.

The anticicipation for these stores is killing me!

Having lived through the Ames-Zayre merger, I could have warned them about this.

But nobody asked.   ::)

I'm pretty sure most retailers are better than that these days.

Why?  The management are pretty much all the same people, or their proteges.

There are good managers/protegees and there are bad managers/protegees. The good managers are the ones that keep the business afloat, while the bad manager let their business crash and burn.

I guess all of that (the billboards at Miller Park behind second base, and the distribution center) and is just a preview of what's to come for Meijer (along with the newspaper articles and local news about Meijer's future expansion) when they do expand into Wisconsin next year. They are in the planning stages according to many sources. Not only that, Milwaukee is closer to the Meijer stores in suburban Chicagoland.

Here are some news articles to back up what I'm talking about:

This is my 200th post, BTW. Image is self-explanatory.

I was going to place a store list here, but I was well into it when I refreshed the page.

And here's a looong thread on Meijer on another forum: http://www.urbanplanet.org/forums/index.php/topic/43821-meijer/

If you are unsure about the expansion of Meijer into the state of Wisconsin, read these news articles.

(how could Hudsons81 have missed these?!)

In other Meijer news:

In Glendale, Indiana, Meijer has cancelled plans to rezone land on Keystone Avenue that would've housed a new store.
http://www.ibj.com/articles/50158-meijer-drops-rezoning-request-for-proposed-glendale-store

Up in Michigan, a new Meijer store under construction in the Brightmoor neighborhood of Detroit may spur a revitalization of this long-dilapidated west side neighborhood.
http://www.crainsdetroit.com/article/20141019/NEWS/310199989/brightmoor-new-meijer-expected-to-help-boost-urban-revitalization

And out west across the lake in Beloit, Wisconsin, plans are now officially in place for another new Meijer store (how can ShopkoFan miss this?).

Finally, I still have this in one of my kitchen cabinets.

A map showing the interior layout Meijer used for many years until switching over to the Rockwell Group prototype in 2003. Only a handful of stores still use this layout. Sorry if it's not loading for some of you.

I remember the Southgate, Michigan store having a similar layout when it first opened in 1994, but mirrored-as in grocery is to the left. It kept this layout all the way up until it was remodeled into the Rockwell prototype in late 2006 which, for some reason, left the bottle return area at the back-that was pretty chaotic. Anyways, the main problem with this layout-similarly-targeted departments aren't even located next to each other. That was especially the case with electronics-I still remember when I had to go to the back-center area for VHS tapes and CDs, to the toy department for video games and to the front corridor for photos. I am glad all of that has been consolidated into a single department at the back corner furthest from the grocery area.

Speaking of which-last night (or the night before) I had a dream in which I was inside an old-layout Meijer that was partially renovated into the Rockwell prototype-the old pharmacy window at the back was still there right in the pets department and eerily enough still had shelves for prescription drugs back in there.

Meijer is now officially going to expand into the Cleveland market (actually, closer to Akron).
That makes it the third new market Meijer will soon expand into (after Wisconsin and Upper Michigan).

http://www.ohio.com/news/local/meijer-grocery-store-could-be-coming-to-former-stow-kent-plaza-instead-of-residential-neighborhood-1.540410

TheFugitive

Interesting!  They had plans to expand into Cleveland several years ago,
then abruptly canceled them and sold off the properties.

Hopefully that means Pittsburgh is next!

Another remodeling may have started at the Southgate, Michigan store. Encountered this while I was there today.

This store has seen a slight increase in traffic after it's across-the-street Super Kmart competitor bugged out in October 2014.

Meijer is closing it's Mount Morris Township, Michigan location in May. This location originally opened in 1972.

http://www.mlive.com/news/flint/index.ssf/2015/02/pierson_road_meijer_in_mount_m.html#incart_story_package

Do keep in mind that Meijer usually does not permanently cease operations at one of it's stores, similar to Walmart. Prior to this point, all of the Meijer stores that did permanently cease operations were in central Ohio.

The only store that closed without alternative locations within a 15-mile radius was Newark, Ohio in 2013.

TheFugitive

That is a rough area.  Hills had a store on Pierson Rd. when I lived in Flint
and it was very rough.   Someone actually blew-up the Loss Prevention Manager's car
in the parking lot, and they transferred him out of town for his own protection.

The fact that Flint has lost another 40,000 people since I lived there also
likely has something to do with it.

Apparently, contaminated fuel somehow ended up in the kerosene that was sold at the gas station at the Southgate, Michigan store on Monday.

Quote from: the above linkMeijer is alerting customers that kerosene sold at its Southgate gas station may have been contaminated with fuel.

Any customer who purchased Kerosene April 20 at the gas station, which is at 16300 Fort St., is asked to contact Meijer at 1-800-543-3704. Only kerosene sold at this particular Meijer gas station on April 20 is affected.

Records show only one customer was affected. Meijer is attempting to reach the customers where possible.

Customers may contact Meijer at 1-800-543-3704 if they have any questions.

Meijer is scouting locations on Detroit's lower east side for their third store within that city's boundaries. The first opened at Gateway Plaza in 2013 and a second will open on the city's northwest side next month.

I'd bet that it's busier today than it ever was when it was a Super Kmart.
I love that café in the front left corner. I bet it has a great view of the parking lot and microwave tower outside from the dining area inside.

That tower is actually one of several on that site-they all belong to WLQV AM 1500, which is a Christian Talk station. Originally, when Storer Broadcasting erected those towers for WJBK (as WLQV was originally known as) over a half-century ago, they also erected four additional transmitters closer to Dix Highway. Those four transmitters were taken down in the late 1980's to make room for this store.

(Sidenote: Storer once owned WJBK AM-FM-TV in the Detroit market, ultimately, they were left with just the TV station (channel 2), which was originally a CBS affiliate and is today a Fox O&O.)

Interesting to see how they have totally automated the deposit bottle return
process since I lived in Michigan.

That's pretty much standard in any deposit state (at least here in the northeast) among the larger (grocery, Walmart/Target) type stores.

Smaller stores will still take them back manually, probably they don't get enough to warrant a machine being installed (though they do make machines that can take glass, plastic and cans all in one, which will occasionally show up in a smaller store).

The 2 Aldis I've been to - Middle Street in Bristol, CT and Reidville Drive in Waterbury CT have machines. Walmart in Southington, CT has an all in one machine and I think the one in Bristol, CT does too. Neither location is a super center. At Walmart in Southington/Bristol the machine is on the sidewalk in front of the store. The Walmart Neighborhood Market in Bristol has several machines on the side walk in front of the store. Shoprite in Waterbury, CT has the machines on the sidewalk. The Drusts have the machines as far away from the stores as possible at Shoprites in Southington/Wallingford. The machines attract bugs and rodents and obviously they don't want those in the store.

A fake $100 coupon has circulated all over the social media sites to the point that Meijer released this statement to make things clear:

Quite often. Fake coupons for Target. Sites claiming you won a Target or Walmart gift card. Etc etc etc

TheFugitive

My local Shop 'n Save store stopped taking ALL online coupons for awhile,
citing the high number of fakes.

The Memorial Mall, located across the street from Shopko in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, will become the future site of a Meijer store. The majority of the mall sat empty, and the mall losing more tenants, like Deb and Radio Shack.
