I would like to own my own department store. Keep in mind my goal is not to be the next SAM WALTON, but I'd still like to own a few locations.

I would buy an old Bradlees location, and rebuild what it once was. I've always loved Bradlees since I was a little girl. I'd work hard to put it at the top of the retail lists. Anyone wanna work for me? lol

I'd love an old vintage 1950's 2 story department store. Like there are any of those still around. I'd turn it into a giant loft apartment.

Not my first choice, but my friend that I do research with just had a birthday party in the hallowed remnants of the former KB Toy Store in Century III.   You can see some pictures in my albums on facebook.  And feel free to freind me if you like as well.

I don't know about where you live, but around me; there are a bunch of two story Sears and JC Penney's that are two stories, granted they are in malls.

Prior to the migration of the department stores, they were all in downtown locations. That type of location would be awesome to rehabitate.

I would bring back the traditional "five and dime" type store that I remember from my childhood.  It would have a great lunch counter (serving real Coke in the paper cup in the silver cup holder) and a small section for every little thing you could think of.

What I remember the best of the GC Murphy, Grant, Kreske era is how there was so much stuff in the store that you just couldn't find anywhere else!  Where else could you go in 1960 and buy clothes, perfume, needles and thread, any kind of toy, shoes and still not have even looked at everything?  We would spend hours looking all around and even if we didn't buy anything, there was always the lunch counter with their fries and Coke!

Those were the days!

BTW - The would only be open from 9-6 and no one would mind!

I'd buy a few old Ames, Caldor, or Bradlees locations in New England, and pay hundreds of millions of dollars to remodel the stores, and open a few Shopko discount store locations inside of them.

Of course, I would be the store planner of Shopko if this were to ever happen, twenty years from now.

Hi, C3!  I checked out your photos from the KB party and have to ask how in the world were you able to pull that off?  Very cool way to celebrate your day.

You should be able to find some great shots of the mall on deadmall.com as they have a pretty extensive photo gallery.  If I can find any of my old ones, I'll try and get them to you.

This is a photoraph from the Stearns store. It's an example of the type of retail store I'd love to convert. Of course since This is from the early 60's, not much luck of finding something like this now.... It's nice to dream though! :)

Here is the second photo from another Stearns location. The picture above shows the "fishtail" in the ceiling, this was installed during construction for future 3rd story expansion. Attached is the store that already expanded to it's 3rd floor.

That's what I'm talking about!  I miss the grand look of the former malls and department stores back when it was an "event" to go shopping.  I'm not a Wal-Mart basher, but the idea of an identical store on every corner has made everything seem so much the same and have little identity now.

Okay, this is seriously one of the coolest things I've ever seen -- how did this come to pass?? The location, the items on display...so awesome! What a fantastic idea!!

I'd buy back the Stein Mart occupying half the Kroger I knew as a child, knock down the false ceilings and cheap plaster walls dividing it from the rest of the former store, then re-open it.

As for the second-biggest Kroger in the world (no exaggeration; it really is) right across the street, I'd burn it to the ground.

I would resurrect the Egg Harbor City NJ Acme, the Berlin NJ Acme, the Williamstown NJ Acme, and I would also revive the entire Jamesway chain, albeit more modernized to make it seem more appealing to today's shoppers.

Ive always wanted to get the Agawan Mass Ames ive seen pics before daves and it is awsome id expose the Zayre Brown and Tan walls outside and but in huge display windows redo the reciving docks and use a portion as a auto shop to fix and sell cars build a loft type second floor in the back big enought for a bed and bath and the sales floor my home with cash registers and al displays set up with a small portion of the store for my defunct retail shopping cart collection.:) ans paint the box out front tan with a red ames sign
