Because something has to keep the mall going? ;)

I think it was more the fact that they were closing stores where the lease had ended (probably something to do with the fact it might be quite higher if they negotiated a new lease).

Kmart has 977 stores left now, when it had 2114 stores when filing for bankruptcy, whats the deal?

They didn't want to compete with us :) (Just a joke, as our Scout Troop is officially #2114) :)

how long has Kmart had problems now, for 20 years id say right? 20 yrs ago they were going to put one in Littleton NH (Where Walmart is) but they backed out, why cause they wouldnt make a living? and they were having problems then.

I think it's been only 15 years or maybe a little less that they've been having problems. 20 years ago would've been 1995. I know of 4 stores (all have since closed) that opened in the mid-late 90s. Wallingford, New Haven, and Plainville in Connecticut. Wallingford and New Haven were Super KMARTS and Plainville was Big KMART. I don't remember what year Wallingford opened, but New Haven opened in 1997 and Plainville opened in 1998 or 1999. Bristol also opened in 1999 in the old Caldor. Bristol and Southington Connecticut both closed in 2003 and Plainville in 2004 I think. 2005 is the year that KMART and SEARS got married so it's been 10 years since that fiasco.

Ok Kmart in Benningtons VT hours were from 8 am to 10 pm Monday-SAt and 8 am to 9 pm Sundays, now its 8 am to 9 pm Monday-Saturdays and 8 am to 7 pm Sundays, does that mean its in danger of closing?

Who knows at this point - seems like all the stores are in danger of closing.

Though, I'd think that would be one that would be less likely, since Bennington has only Walmart (and not a very large store at that), a non mall JC Penney (in the same plaza as Kmart), no Target, no mall and other shopping is quite a ways away.

I still don't understand how some stores are struggling and some are staying afloat, I mean my one and only store here which is atleast a mile up the road from Walmart and and a Target on another street about the same distance does very well. They are actually doing better than just staying afloat because just about everytime I go there are always shoppers and on the weekend it stays busy. Maybe it's because here people are fed up with the dirty Walmart stores and the overly priced Target. Our Sears store on the other hand is a different story because it's dead all the time and the mall is always busy. ???

Caldor1999

I don't get why they just don't close all their locations? Its too late to turn them around. They had a good 10 years to get things back on track and everything they tried to do failed.

A man was injured when he fell of the roof of the abandoned KMART in Torrington, CT where he was trying to steal copper from the AC Units.

Marc's Note:I will bet that now he will turn around and sue the landlord and maybe Sears Holding Corporation. This wouldn't surprise me a bit. Criminals often sue when they get hurt trying to commit a crime.

It's funny that he committed larceny at a vacant store.

There was a similar case in California several years ago.

A burglar was trying to break into a school, and he fell through a skylight and about 75 feet
into a pool.  He was paralyzed.  Believe or not he filed a personal injury suit and that school
district is now footing the bill for his lifetime care.

California had to pass a law specifically barring you from filing suit if you are injured during
the commission of a crime.

Not sure if Connecticut has done the same.

I was out that way last week, and drove past the old Super Kmart in Brooklyn, OH, only to find that IT'S GONE.

RAZED.

The only things left are the parking lot and some of the U-bollards from the gas station. The building and all of the signage is gone, like it never existed.

I'll probably try soon to see if anything has been done at all to the old Super Kmart over here in Southgate, Michigan.

The Super K-mart in Moon Township, PA has also been demolished.
Only the Outback Steak House on the edge of the property remains.

Chevron had bought the property and had planned to build a new headquarters
here for their Marcellus Shale Fracking Operations.  However, those plans have
been put on hold, and the property is still vacant.

Rumor is they are holding back, waiting to see if new Gov. Tom Wolf
follows through on his plan to slap additional taxes on fracking.  If they do
the lot may sit empty for a LOOOOONG time.

They want to be the A&P of discount stores? Keep trying everything until there are no options left, then sell whatever is left to whoever wants it? ;)

I hope not because I completely despise Walmart.
There's always Meijer (Green Bay will get 2 locations in 2017), Fred Meyer and Shopko, but those are regional (for now). And Target can be upscale, overpriced discounter, but sometimes I can snag some good deals there when given the opportunity. And then there's places like Family Dollar and Dollar General peddling their wares, of which half is junk. I also got a good deal at Burlington Coat Factory on wrist watch, which I only payed $6.00 for.
