Sure, it survives in the South and in parts of the Upper Midwest, but did you know that it operated for a few years in the 1970s in Hudson, NH, too?

Here's a 1972 profile of the owner of the local franchise; at the time Piggly Wiggly was the second-largest supermarket chain in the country and operated in more than 30 states.

By 1977 it had closed, and the vacant space had various temporary uses such as this 1978 furniture liquidation sale.

In 1980 Nashua Trust announced plans for a facility on the site.

Through a succession of mergers and acquisitions over the years Nashua Trust became Citizens Bank, which remains in operation to this day.

But what goes around, comes around...Piggly Wiggly is now owned by supermarket wholesaler C&S of Keene, NH! I wonder how the Piggly Wiggly banner might have fared had C&S adopted it for the former Grand Union markets.

I shopped at a Piggy Wiggy when I was on vacation in NC. It was a nice store, but small. The people were nice.

IGA/Kmart Is Forever!

We used to have some Piggly Wiggly stores in my part of the country. The two stores that were in my area shut down in the early 90's. I never had the chance to go inside the both of them though. I was only eight years old when they shut down. I heard that they were really a nice store. I even know somebody from my church that had originally worked at one of these two Piggly Wiggly Stores as well as several other grocery stores in my area that are either still open, have been bought out by other chains/stores, or that have gone out of business. Does anybody know if Piggly Wiggly has any stores at all around Myrtle Beach in South Carolina? My family and I are going to go on a vacation to Myrtle Beach in either the summer of 2013 or 2014 and if anybody here on the board knows whether or not they have locations down around Myrtle Beach in South Carolina, I would certainly love to know. That way, I can maybe to go to a Piggly Wiggly Store when I do go on vacation. If anybody has any information please feel free to leave a post with an answer to my request.

I have always liked small grocery stores. My main grocery store preference are IGA Stores. I have three IGA Stores in my area that I mostly do all of my shopping at, but I will purchase some grocery items at Kmart as well depending on what they have for sale or if they have any items that I may happen to need.

As I stated in my post above, There used to be two Piggly Wiggly stores in my area that shut down and went out of business back in 1991. If the both of these Piggly Wiggly stores were still open and in business, I would probably be shopping for my groceries at Piggly Wiggly as well
