Hewitt's Garden Center in Halfmoon has four green Rehrig models. Also included is the lot number on one of them.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is kicking in some cash to expedite the mall's demolition.

https://patch.com/pennsylvania/pittsburgh/pa-pitching-aid-century-iii-mall-demolition-effort

Sadly typical of these situations.  Private owners milk the last dime out of the dying mall and then taxpayers get stuck with the bill to deal with the fallout.

Given how bad the situation got at the Dixie Square Mall they no doubt feel that they have no choice.

TGI Fridays did indeed file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
They were able to secure debtor-in-possession financing which will keep the
remaining restaurants operating for now.

Came across this interesting piece about the owner of several dying Pennsylvania malls in the online Pittsburgh Trib.

TGI Fridays abruptly shuttered another 50 locations.  Analysts are expecting that the chain will follow Red Lobster into bankruptcy.

Denny's has announced that they will close 150 underperforming restaurants by years-end.

Specific locations of the closures were not announced.  Also they are paring back the menu and dialing back on their 24-hour opening requirement (as a practical matter it's unenforceable from what I've seen).  Both of those likely a result of continuing struggles with staffing.

I've seen these empty Walgreens stores reused for a couple different things. I've seen one used as a Dollar Tree, and another as a family fun center. I even saw one in Jacksonville, Florida being used as a medical center. I've seen a lot of empty ones that look like they have been vacant for years as well.

Hardware stores / Home Centers / True Value files for bankruptc...

Hardware wholesaler True Value has filed for bankruptcy.

This appears to be a move to position themselves for a potential sale to rival Do-It-Best.  The True Value stores are all individually owned and operated and will continue to function.  This bankruptcy affects only their wholesale supplier.

Grocery Stores/Supermarkets / Re: Giant Eagle
Last post by TheFugitive - October 15, 2024, 01:53:49 PM
The Shop-n-Save store in Green Tree, PA where I worked as a kid has been sold to Giant Eagle.  It is currently closed for remodeling and Giant Eagle is currently hiring to staff it (not keeping the former Shop-n-Save employees around apparently).  It will reopen as a Giant Eagle in mid-November.

This is less than a mile from the Giant Eagle in what is left of the old Parkway Center Mall.  It will be interesting to see whether the company keeps both of them open.

The Shop-n-Save was franchised by the same family that owned it when I worked there.  A few years ago they sold their stores in South Fayette Township and Kennedy Township to Giant Eagle.  They also owned a local chain of brewpubs which suddenly closed their doors in February and were then sold.  It seems that family may have run into some financial setbacks.

Walgreens has announced plans to close around 1200 locations, 1/7 of their total store count, over the next three years.

https://patch.com/pennsylvania/pittsburgh/walgreens-closing-1-200-stores-see-impact-pa-locations

A location near me closed a couple of years ago and is now a very large Dollar Tree location.  Empty big-box pharmacies are going to increasingly become an issue for local communities.
