STAMFORD -- A 40,000-square-foot Barnes & Noble bookstore is the first tenant the Stamford Town Center mall has recruited for a new retail wing that will replace the old Filene's store next year.

The two-level store is scheduled to open in October 2007, the mall and the New York City-based book chain said yesterday.

Demolition of the Filene's store at the corner of Tresser Boulevard and Greyrock Place, which closed in January 2005, was completed yesterday, mall management said.

Barnes & Noble said the store that will stock almost 200,000 book, music, DVD and magazine titles will be its largest in Connecticut.

Its children's department will carry 15,000 titles.

"The fact that Barnes & Noble has chosen Stamford Town Center for one of its largest stores nationwide says a lot about how this area attracts the best of the best -- and it is obviously the perfect complement to our downtown retail market," Stamford Mayor Dannel Malloy said in a statement.

Rumors had circulated for the past several months that Barnes & Noble was interested in opening a store in the mall, but the publicly traded company did not confirm plans for a Stamford location until yesterday,

"We've been looking for a store in Stamford for a long time, but we haven't been able to find the right space until now," said Don Kuszmar, Barnes & Noble's real estate director. "We were thrilled when this property became available because we think it's the best location to serve Stamford's solid, well-educated community."

The store will feature plenty of frills. Barnes & Noble, operator of 799 bookstores nationwide, said the new store will have a cafe that serves Starbucks coffee and items from the Cheesecake Factory.

Customers will be able to sample any of 200,000 CD music titles at listening stations.

An in-store newsstand will offer more than 2,000 titles, including hundreds of hard-to-find specialty magazines, and out-of-town and foreign newspapers.

News of the Barnes & Noble store comes after the July 2 opening of a 4,100-square-foot Apple Store that sells computers, iPods and other products on the Stamford mall's Level 4.

Critics, including retail consultants, have said the shopping center should find more popular retailers that would attract shoppers.

Apple and Barnes & Noble are "big wins" and other trendy retailers might follow them to the Town Center, said Kevin Coupe, editor of Darien-based Morningnewsbeat.com, a news and information service for retailers.

"Finally, the Stamford Town Center seems to understand the notion of destination retail," Coupe said. "Putting in a 40,000-square-foot Barnes & Noble superstore is a terrific idea. It gives you a reason to go to the mall. It creates a sense of community. It is something the Town Center has needed for a long, long time."

Norman Lotstein, retail specialist with Pyramid Real Estate Group in Stamford, agreed.

"Barnes & Noble is a wonderful addition to the downtown and is likely to be just one of a number of first-rate merchants that will be attracted to the new, outwardly oriented addition to the Town Center," Lotstein said.

The 140,000-square-foot wing in the former Filene's area is slated to have a glass-enclosed coterie of eight stores, plus walkways, sidewalk restaurants and a new Tresser Boulevard entrance that will be pedestrian-friendly.

The mall is getting building permits for the Barnes & Noble store and construction of the addition will start within the next few weeks, said Michael McAndrews, the Town Center's general manager.

He said the addition will have about 110,000 rentable square feet and the rest will be elevators, lobbies and other public space.

"A mega-bookstore with access to the street will be a great asset to the community," he said.

Sandra Goldstein, executive director of the Stamford Downtown Special Services District, called Barnes & Noble "an extraordinary coup for the mall's renaissance."

"To get a bookstore that is building its premier, showcase urban model in our city is just phenomenal," she said.

Barnes & Noble will join the mall's other book seller, a 3,900-square-foot Waldenbooks store located on Level 5.

Holley Stein, spokeswoman for Waldenbooks parent company, Ann Arbor, Mich.-based Borders Group Inc., said Waldenbooks will remain in the mall after Barnes & Noble arrives.

Waldenbooks renewed its lease at the Town Center this past spring.

Saks is going to be returning to this mall in the form of their off 5th discount store.

Man, this mall has taking a turn for the worst. I lived in Stamford for 2.5 years before moving to NC. Its becoming a dead mall.

In 2019, J. Crew, Armani Exchange, Ann Taylor, Chico’s, Gymboree, Payless ShoeSource, The Walking Co., Pottery Barn and Williams Sonoma and Pandora Jewelry all closed. Also, owner Taubman Centers which built it back in the 1980's and the same owner of Westfarms put it up for sale, like they knew it was a dying mall.

So far just in 2020, H&M, Clarks, Uniqlo, Boost Mobile and Forever 21 have or are set to close. Macy's, I am shocked wasn't on the closing list. It still looks like the 1980's in it and its very old and dumpy.

Some of these stores like Pandora relocated to the brand new SoNo Collection in Norwalk, which many say is to blame for so many closures.

Looks like the Apple store is leaving the mall and relocating to SoNo.
