I hope the remaining small town Kmart stores are sold to Rose's or Shopko Hometown. The remaining locations in larger cities could become Meijer, Burlington, Best Buy, Guitar Center, etc.

what will happen to Kmart? and Ok what of towns where they are the only store of its kind then what?

at this rate they will have 750-780 stores left.

Retail Fan+ (Justin Hill)

I blame both former Kmart CEO Charles Conaway and current Sears Holdings CEO Eddie Lampert for the current state of Kmart. The filing of Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2002, the first batch of store closings that followed and merger with Sears Roebuck & Company in 2005. Kmart is never going to recover and we know it. Both Sears and Kmart ran themselves into the ground. The only way out is to kill off Kmart and Sears.

Retail Fan+ (Justin Hill)

I said it before, and I will say it again: Kmart Australia has NO interest in buying the U.S. Kmart stores. They already have their hands full with the stores they have in Australia and New Zealand. And besides, Kmart Australia parted ways with the U.S. Kmart Corporation way back in 1994. If anything, another American retailer, like Rose's, might show interest in the remaining Kmart Stores.

I think KMart might survive if they get away from Sears. If Sears spin off KMart, maybe both will survive. I just hope someone will start a local New England chain.

We really don't know if this story is 100% true because the vendor won't speak on the record. If other vendors either start demanding cash up front or start cutting Kmart off that could signal that bankruptcy is imminent.

When I was with Ames during the first bankruptcy the Chairman of PepsiCo went to the
Wall Street Journal and spoke ON the record.

This was indeed considered quite unusual.

I predict LEGO, Nintendo, and Mattel are next...
You can also add Hasbro to the list!
...and Spin Master, Playmates Toys, Kenner, Tiger Electronics, Playskool, Fisher-Price, etc.

The Kmart and Sears names (here in America at least) are becoming the very definition of failure, and how not to run a business.

If Kmart is going loose all said toy vendors, then they might as well stop selling toys and video games!

whats Kmart dong wrong? if they stop selling toys and videos they will cause customers to go elsewhere. how long has Kmart been going down, since the first half of the 1990s?

Kmart remodeled their Des Plaines, Illinois store, added more groceries to the mix. I think the makeover is too little too late for the struggling retail giant. Nathan Bush has a photo gallery of the store at his Flickr account:

Kmart/Sears Holdings was too lazy to update the 1990-2004 Kmart logos on the front/sides of the building.

When I got to Imlay City, Michigan in 1989 there was a Kmart in the next town over.
It was already a pretty run-down and scuzzy place back then.  Certainly did not compare
favorably with our Ames store, or even the Fisher Big Wheel across the street (a very small
and dying chain)

A couple of Kmarts I had been to over in the Flint area were no better.
This problem has been four decades in the making.

My guess is that Kmart is going keep closing more stores until there are no more Kmarts!

Looks like there might be a reckoning for Kmart and Sears sometime after the holiday season as suppliers are reportedly curtailing shipments

It could be even sooner than that - I wouldn't be surprised if the end came next year, after this holiday season. It all comes down to when Fast Eddie gets tired of throwing his money into the raging dumpster fire that is Sears Holdings.

what part of net year? a company can only file every 7 yrs. thy were bankrupt 2002-2003 and it takes time to throw in the towel, ames a year after filing they threw in the towl.

They could be in Blockbuster limbo - all company owned locations will close but specific franchises can stay open as long as they pay the fees.
