(AP) NEW YORK â€" Between 100 and 120 Sears and Kmart stores are shutting down after terrible holiday sales during the most crucial time of the year for retailers.
Sears Holdings Corp., based in Hoffman Estates, Ill., said Tuesday that the store closings will generate $140 to $170 million in cash in inventory sales. The retailer anticipates additional proceeds from the sale or sublease of real estate holdings.
The retailer says that same-store revenue fell 5.2 percent to date for the quarter at both Sears and Kmart. Kmart's declining sales were blamed on diminished layaways and a drop in clothing and consumer electronics sales. Sears' cited lackluster consumer electronics and home appliance sales.
Sears has more than 4,000 stores in the U.S. and Canada.
Well, it certainly could have been worse. Remember the huge number of store closings while Kmart was struggling prior to and during its bankruptcy? Edit 4:52 zayre88 is absolutely right; this is but a harbinger of more store closings to come. One troubling sign is that Sears couldn't pay for holiday merchandise out of cash flow; they had to dip into their borrowing facility. SHLD was down 27.2% today...

It could have been worse, but it will be worse sooner or later...
This company is just a mess. They've been loosing market share for years, revenues are down, same-store-sates are down, profit is down, store count is down.
They don't have a clue on how to fix it. Sears stores today look the same way they were 15 years ago. Kmart stores look the same way they were 20 years ago.
The company wasted time and money in various concepts, brands, color schemes and they still have no clear focus, no strategy to revamp the stores and the shopping experience.
Sears stock took a 20% drop today on this news...
From Forbes:
Quote“Sears is past the point of no return,†says Mark Cohen, a professor at Columbia Business School who is also a former chief executive and chairman of Sears Canada. “I don’t know if they will necessarily go out of business in 2012, but they are digging themselves into the ground.â€
From USA Today:
QuoteColumbia Business School professor Mark Cohen â€" who was CEO of Sears Canada until 2004 â€" is critical of company management, as well as the pricing strategy and merchandise selection. "There is no retail turnaround that is possible," he says.
Mark Cohen is former chief executive and chairman of Sears Canada and he used to be chairman and CEO of Bradlees.
Very sad, but unfortunately Lampert has run the companies into the ground ever since he bought them and took over.
Here's two good artclies about the closing blasting Lampert and his poor management-

And to just think 15 years ago Kmart and Sears were both going strong on their own, now together they are are disaster that is getting worse by the day.
I don't keep my ear that close to the ground, but I sure heard this coming. I have a hard time thinking of things they're doing right.
Yesterday we went shopping in a fast growing, upmarket town. We stopped at a brand new Kohls and then went next door to a well-kept JCPenney's. Across the street is a Target and a halfway-decent Peebles. Where is Sears in all this? They have a small dealer store selling major appliances and a small selection of tools, and no Kmart. I have nothing against the local owner, he does a good job, but the business model there just doesn't seem to work anymore. To me, Sears has messed up the most by putting its real assets (the brandnames, especially Craftsman/Diehard) in every Tom, Dick & Harry competitor in town. As for Kmart, from what I've seen they are only successful in locations where WalMart can't or won't go. I've seen some of their stores really thrive that way, but sitting around hoping the competition won't open up in the neighborhood just isn't much of a business plan.
Agh, "Sears Appliance and Hardware." What a terrible idea. "Sears Hardware" used to be a great store when it was on its own. They took out the Garden Centers and added in appliances and in-store signage out of the '50s, and it's just a mess. I don't remember the last time I was in the local one, but I know that the other nearest one in Westlake, OH, is now an Aldi Food Market.
I'm still excited for the return of Kmart, if for no other reason than to give me somewhere else to shop nearby that ISN'T Walmart or Target.
My vote is for the KMART in Waterbury, CT to close. What a dump.
According to one published report no Kmart locations in the Northeast are closing

I remember when I joined back in 2006, people were saying "any day now". They may not have been correct back then, but I truly believe that these are the last years. A sad end, but also a valuable lesson.
Well a partial list has been revealed here- http://www.searsmedia.com/tools/122711_close.pdf (http://www.searsmedia.com/tools/122711_close.pdf)
It's about half Sears, half Kmarts. Anyone's local store closing? One of mine is.
The Nashua and Keene NH Sears Essentials stores got whacked. Nashua has a traditional Sears store in the Pheasant Lane Mall, while the Keene area will have to make do with Hometown stores in Rindge or Claremont or schlep over to the full-line stores in Nashua or Leominster, MA. No Kmart in Keene, either, though there's a Kmart in Claremont. I would have thought Keene was a robust enough market to support a full-line Sears or a Kmart, but apparently not.

So in NH, Kmart stores that became Essentials failed... Only 6 regular Kmart left.
I think most observers would agree that the Sears Essentials format has been a failure; they shuttered the Essentials in Derry, NH last year and the space became a huge Market Basket. Here's local coverage of the Keene and Nashua closures:
http://www.sentinelsource.com/news/local/sears-to-close/article_3aec0589-e099-5eca-9988-561848164968.html
http://www.nashuatelegraph.com/news/944871-196/sears-downsizing-swallows-up-amherst-street-store.html
I imagine the Keene closing creates a vacancy for a Hometown store to open.
From the "What Was Eddie Lampert Thinking" department, an excellent Wall Street Journal (by way of The Australian) article touches on Lampert's earlier experience at AutoZone which might have encouraged him to use the same strategy at Sears:
http://www.theaustralian.com.au/business/wall-street-journal/nothing-to-fear-but-sears-itself/story-fnay3x58-1226231790203
I like one comment about the Nashua store "I love K-Mart in Hooksett. Sears Essentials were K-Marts with Sears prices."
To me Sears Essentials was a failure from the start, not good enough to be a full-line Sears, not good enough to be a Kmart. Some appliances, some tools, some groceries... a very large convenience store with big-ticket items at high prices all presented in a Sears way in the shell of a former Kmart.
Here's a list of 80 closings. Still can't believe why KMART Waterbury, CT isn't closing.
http://searsholdings.com/about/122711_close.pdf
This is terrible news, I really don't want to witness the demise of this company. I enjoy both my local Kmart and Sears stores, and I've been quite loyal to Kmart over the past few years. They've done a lot to try and improve my local store recently but it really hasn't swayed the local opinion much. Walmart remains ridiculously successful, often remaining busier than all other stores in the area combined.
I really don't see why the two companies needed to be combined. Imo, merging does not help two companies that are loosing money and who's stores are ancient and small, and what's the point of concept stores if your company could never afford to roll them out? Sears Essentials was probably a great idea, but it's not like they could have ever done it with the shape they're in. As it stated in the report, they won't even spend as much money as Macy's revamp their decrepit and ancient stores. This company has got to be able to afford to try something different, instead of just hoping for better results if they continue down the same path.
Out here in SE Pennsylvania, the 2 Sears - Kmart stores that are closing are the Sears (former Gimbel Brothers) store in Upper Darby, and the Sears in Pottstown.
MikeRa, I want the Modell's Sporting Goods (former 1966 General Cinema), Burlington Coat Factory (former Penn Fruit), and Red Lobster (former Food Fair/Pantry Pride) near the old Bazaar of All Nations to move to the Upper Darby Sears building once it closes.

There is a Modell's Sporting Goods that is a block or 2 up 69th Street from the Upper Darby Sears, at 78 South 69th Street, so that one would be the that would move instead of the Clifton Heights Modell's
(former General Cinema/Eric/United Artists Theatre).
I didn't know that but it sounds like an old crappy one. The Modell's in Exton is much bigger and cleaner than the Bazaar or Granite Run ones. How about they put a Modell's into two thirds of the first floor of the Sears, and a Red Lobster in the other third. Burlington could take up the whole second floor.
Well, the Kmart I am working at is closing. Good 'ol Kmart 4276 in Toledo.
We found out the day the list was released... I learned the news from a co-worker who had posted the news via Facebook. Later that night, when I worked, some co-workers and myself were dragged back to the office to hear the news from the store manager. He even said, 'Well,if you've read the paper or watched the news you won't be surprised by what I'm about to say....' Then read from a script some "kind" words that came from Eddie. We then had to read and sign some documents saying that we wouldn't talk to the press and stuff.
As I worked the service desk, one of the assistants and the loss prevention manager ripped out our Western Union and Ohio Lottery terminals. Floor associates were busy removing any trace of layaway signage. My co-workers fought back tears as we all wondered, why?
The worst part is... They gave us no reason. Our lease had been resigned last year. Last year our sales increased 12%, the only store in our district were the employees got bonuses for positive sales variance. We got new carts. We got an expanded pantry department. Things were looking good. If I had to venture a guess, it's probably our ridiculous shrink. We've only had loss prevention in the store 6 out of the last 12 months and over $165,345 in merchandise walked our doors. But of course, you can't explain that our shrink has been omproving and the assholes who have been stealing from our store have finally been fired.
I love my store. I love my job. And for the longest time, I loved the company. After finishing my degree, I was set to enter the management training program and I'm on track to do an internship this summer. But this news has got me wondering about any future with Kmart. Why waste any more time with a sinking ship? Do I really want to risk being placed in a store that may close? Do I want to work for a company that's only strategy is close stores without reopening any new ones?
...Honestly, I think this store closing may be just what I need to seek other management opportunities with better retailers.
KmartDanny09, why do they not want you to talk to the press?
Not to add to the bad vibe, but it looks like Chapter 11 could be coming to Sears Holdings. CIT has reportedly shut off supplier credit, and when one factor bails, others may follow.

I was told by one of my sources that it should be coming out anytime soon more than likely by the beginning of Feb. The remaining locations they are deciding on closing are ones they are on the fence about. They are high profile stores that have a lot of money invested in them because of remodels and they are afraid to lose them.
This Sears in Suffolk, VA is closing despite not being on the initial list. I wonder if there are similar "stealth" closures of Sears and/or Kmart stores elsewhere.

QuoteSears closing all Nine Great Indoors stores
By Sandra M. Jones
Tribune reporter

Sears Holdings Corp. said it plans to shutter all nine of its Great Indoors stores, including one in Lombard.
The Hoffman Estates-based retailer informed store managers Thursday of the pending store closures. The timing of the closing has yet to be determined, according to Sears spokeswoman Kimberly Freely.
The upscale, big-box home decorating and remodeling are holdovers from the days before Kmart Holding Corp. bought Sears, Roebuck and Co. Former Sears Chairman and CEO Arthur Martinez conceived the concept in 1998 as a growth vehicle that would operate 200 stores.

QuoteSears shedding some stores, reports 4Q loss ($2.4 billion fourth-quarter loss)
By ANNE D'INNOCENZIO, AP Retail Writers â€" 1 minute ago
NEW YORK (AP) â€" Sears said Thursday that it's unloading some of its profit-busting stores, but the retailer fell short of revealing how it plans to woo shoppers back into its remaining ones.
"The image is atrocious. The stores are old and they're run down. They don't look like a nice place to visit," said Ron Friedman, a partner in the retail and consumer products industry group of accounting firm Marcum, LLP in New York. "I don't think that the Sears we see today can be around from a year today. It has to change."
Industry watchers weren't as impressed as Wall Street. They said that Sears' biggest problem is that the company hasn't invested in its stores.
Indeed, rivals like Wal-Mart typically spend between $6 and $8 per square foot on things such as updating cash registers, replacing floor tiles and repainting stores, according to research firm International Strategy & Investment Group. But over the past few years, Sears spent on average between $1.50 and $2.00 per square foot.
Not surprising.... ::)

Sears Canada is closing 3 high-profile stores in Vancouver, Calgary and Ottawa and selling the leases back to landlord Cadillac Fairview Corp. Ltd. for a total of $170 million.
The three stores are in major city shopping malls - Vancouver's Pacific Centre, Calgary's Chinook Centre and Ottawa's Rideau Centre. The Sears in Calgary has been open since 1965.
In February, Sears laid off 400 employees in its head office and stores.
Sears Canada Inc. announced last week that profit fell by more than half in the fourth quarter ended Jan. 28 to $38.7 million.
After five years of annual declines in revenue, net earnings and same-store sales, in fiscal 2011 the retailer suffered a loss of $60.1 million.

It appears that the 3 Sears Canada locations sold could become Nordstrom...
QuoteIn the annual report it released today, Sears Holdings Corp. said it would close 173 Sears and Kmart stores across the country in the first half of 2012. The company will also change the format of eight others from Sears Essentials and Sears Grand to Kmart stores.
The hit list comes to 60 Kmarts, 34 Sears, 17 Sears Essentials and Sears Grands, 43 Sears Hometowns, 10 Sears Hardwares and nine Great Indoors.
Previously, Sears had said it would shutter between 100 and 120 full-line stores.
The company has currently identified to the public 105 of the locations that will be shuttered. Of the doomed sites, two Sears stores, three Kmart stores and one Great Indoors store are in Illinois.

Sears was probably feeling alone in Lewiston without more major retail stores in that area. The Lewiston Mall is small and not very attractive.
That's what happens when you have twin cities that each have their own retail hub. What happens is that each one has their own small mall instead of having only one larger mall with both Sears and JCPenney. When Porteous closed at the Auburn Mall, Sears should have moved to that space and expanded the store.
A bit out of our usual coverage area, but the timing of this announcement is quite interesting in light of the Lewiston closure

QuotePontiac’s Kmart store, a staple in Vermillion Plaza for 40 years, will close its doors early next year, local and corporate spokespersons confirmed Friday.
The store will remain open through the Christmas holidays, but new layaway purchases will no longer be accepted, said store manager Jeff Richards. Current layaway items must be paid for by Oct. 31.

I think if SHLD doesn't own the real estate you can count on stores continuing to close as the leases run out. If the leases have a long time to run, subdividing the properties (subject to any restrictive covenants with the landlords) is going to become more and more commonplace. I think Land's End is a goner, too; they've already spun off the Hometown and Outlet businesses to generate cash, and the yuppie clothier should fetch a decent price, if not quite what Sears paid for it. Lampert's game is selling off the family jewels for whatever he can get for them. At this point it may be the only realistic thing to do.

I am very grateful that all three of the Kmart stores that are in the county that I live in are all owned by the Sears Holdings Corporations. It decreases their chances of shutting down. Not only that, but at the same time these stores should be old enough to the point that the buildings could possibly already be paid off. If my calculations are correct on this, that means that they should only have things like gas, water, electricity, etc to pay for monthly. When the location of a store is owned by the corporation that operates the store and the buildings are paid off, they have less expenses to pay for at the end of every month, which in return gives them more revenue to keep the locations open.

“We made a business decision to close this store based on its performance,†said Chris Brathwaite, a spokesman for Sears Holdings Corp., owner of Kmart and Sears.
The Kmart store in Trotwood opened in 1994.

Does anybody know how many stores it is that they have left to close until they reach their total of 120 stores? I am only asking this because I do not want to lose any of the three stores that I have in my area along with a Super Kmart Center that is about an hour and a half from me. Any information would be great.

Does anybody know whether or not this rumor is true? I hope and pray that it is not. I love Kmart. It is the last discount department store that I will shop at since the takeover of Hills in 1998 and the bankruptcy of Ames in 2002. Any information would be great.
I think it is a rumor because it would be all over the internet if it happened. :o
No more Kmarts are being built, and they are closing as the leases run out. Kmart has been going out of business for years and will continue to go out of business until all of them are closed, but it will be the orderly process that has been going on all along. Liquidating all of them at once wouldn't make business sense as the leases would continue to have to be paid on the dark stores unless SHLD went bankrupt which I don't see happening.
When was the last time Kmart opened a new store? Must have been years! Expect once these older locations leases expire, they will close.

What is the point of running a business and advertising if you know your company has no chance of surviving? They have the Shop Your Way Rewards program and promote free Layaway and continue to run these crazy promotions...and for what? Just to go out of business anyway?

Don't know if it is true but it is plausible. Kmart as we all know, has been downsizing for years, closing stores, trying new logos, new color schemes, new concepts, new promotions.... but sales are down, same-store-sales are down, the stores are run down.... nothing's up at Kmart although they appear to be busier.
Kmart is the Borders of book stores, they're the Linens'nThings of bed & bath stores, they're the Circuit City of electronics stores. There is just no room anymore for 3 large-scale discount store chains.
Kmart is a distant 3rd, stores are too old, too small and prices are not competitive compared to Walmart and Target.
If they close it will not be a surprise unfortunately.
At least Kmart still has a wide variety of American made products. Everything at Wal*Mart is foreign made and very cheap. As a consumer I would go to Kmart. You get a better made product that is built to last. You may have to pay a little extra money for it at Kmart, whereas if you were to purchase it from Wal*Mart it would break and you would have to keep replacing it wasting your hard earned money. Having said that, that is why I prefer to shop at Kmart.
Alright, I believe I found the source of the rumor posted the other day. It was just a projection based on the fact that a local store is in fact closing by January. Interestingly, this was NOT a store that was on "the list" posted late last year. So really, any store is fair game these days. But a full scale GOB is not yet in the works.
The store to close is the second closest location to me, Oak Hill, WV. http://www.woay.com/News.aspx?nid=5313
What is interesting is that an employee who actually works there, said that their lease on the building was good until 2016. So this is NOT matter of winding down an old store as the lease runs out, it really does seem like they're erratically shedding stores at this point with no official announcements until the last second. In fact, this was probably THE nicest Kmart I've ever been to. It was built in the early 1990s and is quite big, bright, nice and attractive, but like most other Kmart stores, always dead for business. I might go snap a couple photos before it's gone.
I really think Kmart is truly doomed. A few years ago, I would have said maybe there was a chance for some sort of a comeback, but now I'm sad to say I think they're toast.
Kmart faces a dilemma like Zellers in Canada. Since the arrival of Walmart, Zellers only downsized, they tried various strategies, changed slogans and so on.
In the end it was clear that Zellers would have closed more store and went out of business. They decided to sell instead of doing like Kmart and slowly bleed to death.
Kmart is just squeezed between Walmart and Target. There is no more room for Kmart in 2013. Most Kmart stores are old, too small, they're outdated, they have the same style they had in 2005, 2000, 1995.... They can try all they want, it's over for that brand. Too late....

One factor that is often forgotten is the amount of online shopping that is now done, I think it has significantly cut into the "second tier" discount market. So really, Kmart's competition goes far beyond just Walmart or Target. It's really not so much a fault of their own, as it is the average consumer being more and more content with mediocrity so long as it's had at a cheap price. The only way to have saved the brand would be a radical restructuring, and an
entirely new approach that challenges conventional stores like their competitors (think Amazon shopping meets Walmart). So little of what they've tried is different from what they've always done. A repainting or slogan change doesn't bring business back. They need to think more 21st century moving forward, but I doubt they have the money for that kind of turnaround.
I would rather see Kmart sell to Target than all of the locations disappear. But I don't think Target would be interested, it would probably hurt them more than anything. Target is not without it's own struggle these days.
Good point about the online factor XDeSuEhTX.
Target will also not want Kmart locations. Most of the Kmart stores opened decades ago in thriving malls and shipping centers, or in free standing buildings in thriving areas.
Today these locations are much less attractive. A lot of these sites have been eclipsed by newer shopping centers, big box shopping centers and modern retail development elsewhere in these towns.
Even if Kmart puts millions in their stores, they still are in sites that were prime in the 70's but not anymore in 2013...

Well, not every Kmart location fits that stereotype. In fact a lot of the late Kmart builds between 1990 and 1995 are nice, large stores in plazas that are not so old, and tend to be successfully rehabilitated after Kmart bails. These stores could be ideal for Target in markets where they are not looking to invest in a new build themselves.

Correct. The 1990s Kmart are nicer and more modern and better located.
It all depends on how well the building was kept up. The KMART in Southington, CT was built in the early 1970s and closed in 2002. After extensive renovations it became a massive Price Chopper in 2004. From the outside in places it still looks like KMART.
I don't see anything moving into the Waterbury, CT store should it close. The whole plaza is run-down. There's KMART, Modell's, Jo-ann's and a Daycare Center that takes up 5 store fronts. Perhaps Joann's and Modell's can move into Walmart Plaza across the street then bulldoze the whole plaza and put up a Sam's Club. There were rumors Walmart was going to move to the other end of Waterbury near the new Kohl's and turn their Wolcott Street store into a Sam's Club. Of course if they remodel the whole plaza perhaps they can divide up the KMART space and put in a Dick's Sporting Goods and a couple other stores. Dick's isn't in Waterbury.
The Plainville, CT KMART, which opened in the late 1990s and closed in 2003 was divided into DSW, DICK's, and PETSMART,

A manager at the local store, one of Anniston’s oldest big-box retailers, confirmed that it would be closing, but directed all other questions, including the specific date of closure, to the company’s corporate media relations department.
Efforts to reach media relations representatives with Sears Holdings, the parent company of Kmart, were unsuccessful Tuesday.
The Anniston Kmart opened its doors in 1973 in an 84,000-square-foot space on McClellan Boulevard.

From what I've seen, most of the people who shop at Kmart these days do so because it is in their neighborhood; they'd like to go to Walmart or Target but it is too far to drive. Since a lot of Kmarts are in parts of town that are now on the skids, that makes for a low income clientele. This just pulls their reputation down further. To many, the Kmart brand has been the epitome of cheesiness for decades now. Their best bet might have been just coming up with a whole new name and concept, maybe they could have revived the Kresge brand and aimed for somewhere between Target and Kohls. Hard to imagine something that could cause preppy young women to want to drive over to the poor side of town, to the store their grandmothers shopped at back in '74. Don't get me wrong, I actually like Kmart!

Not surprising - seems that this has been rumored for quite some time. Also, given that there weren't ever very many Super K's in NY, and the other two I know of (Amsterdam and Kingston) both closed some time back - it must be quite an effort to supply this one store with items that none of the other Kmarts in the area (state?) would carry.

That statement is plausible... Anyone that looks at Sears and Kmart knows that something is wrong with these chains. Almost every time there is an online article about Sears or Kmart, comments at the bottom of the page always include people apparently surprised that Kmart is still open for example. It could be sarcastic but after 1,000 closings, Kmart has been out of several markets in the United States for a while....
I don't think we will get the number of closings that they think will happen in this article but I do think we will see another list of about 100 store closings.

Yes hill and ames did so financially well that's why we all still shop their today ;D
No one wants to shop in a rundown store with leaky roofs, a parking lot that has more grass in it then asphalt, old bathrooms with piss stained floors that have literally over the years stained the floor near the urinal and the acid from the urine starts to eat away at the tile. Sure all those things can be fixed by renovating the place but the problem with those old bulding's is you fix one issue another pops up and they keep popping up and popping up and you dont have time or money to fix them all and bam your store is a falling apart mess.
that's the huge issue with any old building they need lots of care and attention with a newer building issues pop up alot less than with a older building and the issues usually aren't as severe and costly. Why do you think kmarts keep disappearing one by one and not on a list of store closings? Its because the places are old and falling apart and they know they don't have the money to keep them up and running properly so they just let the leases expire.
Old stores would be just fine if kmart was making the money to remodel their stores and take care of them but obviously their not. The biggest issue with kmarts stores being old is its hurting their image so how do you fix it? You remodel and build new stores! How do you do that with no money? You cant! Had they started fixing up stores along time ago they wouldn't be as bad off as they are now but instead they just shrugged their shoulders and said ehh its fine. Kmart's terrible looking stores are a big part of the reason why their at the state they are in today.
QuoteSince when is there anything wrong with Kmart having old stores?
As a retail fan, I like these old stores. However, in the retail world in 2013, several Kmart stores are way out of date at a time when consumer are looking for a great shopping experience.
If I look at Maine & New Hampshire, most Wal-Mart stores have been built in the early 90's and the vast majority has been renovated, or expanded and renovated, or entirely replaced by new buildings in the 2000's.
Most Target stores have opened between 2001 and today, they've been updated.
Kmart stores.... they received the Big-Kmart upgrades in the mid 90's. Many have new automatic doors, some have updated signs... that's it. Walk into any of these Kmart in 1997 and in 2013 and you see the same layout, same beige store fixtures and shelves, same mismatched ceiling and floor tiles, the old "Music & Video" sign in the Electronics dept, the same register counters...
Unfortunately Kmart is irrelevant with that kind of offer.

Kmart is a distant 3rd, stores are too old, too small and prices are not competitive compared to Walmart and Target.
Since when is there anything wrong with Kmart having old stores? Back in the 1980/1990's a lot of the Hills and Ames Department Stores that we had here in my part of the country were old and they still did financially well. In fact, the Hills Department Store that my mother took me to got so busy that if you put items in layaway, you had to wait for more than an hour to make your layaway payment every two weeks until the item was paid off. Can you imagine having to a wait through a line every two weeks that lasts an hour or more just to make a layaway payment? Back to my original point though, this building was old along with most of the other Hills and Ames Department Stores and they still did financially well. Why should Kmart be any different?
One thing that I read about Kmart on wikipedia was in the 1990's they stopped focusing on their Kmart Stores and just focused on the other businesses that it was that they owned. That kind of sounds like what they did even in 2005 when they purchased the Sears chain. This was back when Wal*Mart was not as big as they were today and Kmart could have possibly tried relocating or rebuilding some of their stores back in the 1990's which could have kept Kmart in the #1 Discount Department Store Retailer place today.
Here is the Wikipedia story that I am talking about.

As a retail fan, I like these old stores. However, in the retail world in 2013, several Kmart stores are way out of date at a time when consumer are looking for a great shopping experience.
I am exactly like you are Zayre88. I like old retail stores, too. There is something that I have always liked about them since I was a little boy. Not only that, but I pretty much like the stores as an adult that my mother and father raised me on which are the stores that they used to take me to when I was growing up which consists of IGA Supermarket Stores, Hills Discount Department Stores, Ames Discount Department Stores, Kmart Discount Department Stores, Kaufmann's Department Stores, & JCPenney Department Stores. All I pretty much have left to shop at now is my local IGA Supermarkets, Kmart Stores, & JCPenney now that Hills, Ames, & Kaufmann's no longer exist.
Some Kmart Stores are out of date just like you state Zayre88. But all three of the Big Kmart Stores in the county of the state that I live in are still in pretty decent shape and they have recently renovated the restrooms in all three of these Big Kmart Stores.
Since the Kmart Super Center that I go to that is like 60 minutes away from me was built back in the 1990's it is probably in much better shape than these three Big Kmart Stores are since these three Big Kmart Stores were built back in the 1960's/1970's.
P.S. I also like Kroger's Supermarket's too, whenever I go to visit my brother who is going to college in another state.
What gets me mad is that Kmart opened many brand new stores and Super Kmarts in the 90's and today a large number of these are closed.
Meanwhile, many older Kmart stores manage to stay open but were never renovated to the size and standards of these newly built Kmarts.
By newer Kmart I mean this style:

Meanwhile this store is open with the 1978 storefront:
And that second photo looks like 2 of the 3 Kmarts nearest me. Yes, I find it neat that the sign outside that says "Garden Center" dates from the mid-70s, but the college kids that practically grew up on Target & Kohls? I doubt some of them have ever stepped foot in a Kmart. Ever since Ames closed, they are the oldest store in many markets. More and more of their clientele, as I've mentioned before, shop there only because it's close by. With traffic, WalMart or Target could be 15 minutes away but if you live just down the street, eh, go to Kmart, save some gas. But you can't build a future on that market segment.

I've never been in one of these newer style Kmart Stores. I would go to one if I knew where there was one close by to me, but unfortunately there aren't any. Like I stated in my last post on this topic, the only newer Kmart Store around me is the Super Kmart Center built back in the 1990's that is like 60 minutes away from me. These newer Kmart Stores are in other parts of the country though.
Sadly I really think they are past the point of no return. Even if they were able to somehow get cash to remodel their stores, people's opinions of the stores are that they're dirty, rundown, and unkempt. Then there's a marketing issue. Although personally I see handful of commercials on TV for them apparently a lot of people haven't seen them. I remember last year telling someone I went to the Waterbury, CT store they looked dumbfounded and said "I didn't know KMART was still around."
I also come by many people that aren't aware Kmart still exists.

I live in southern NH where the majority of them converted to Sears last decade. There is one about an hour north of us in Claremont, NH, (which is also no longer a standalone Kmart) but most people in my area would never have a reason to travel north to do their shopping as opposed to the Nashua/Manchester areas, which haven't had Kmarts for years either.
I was in the Cromwell Kmart yesterday, and am beginning to see the neglect the corporation puts in to their store. This store still gets relatively good business because of its prime location off the highway and near the Middletown line. But there is just no indication of the store being kept up maintenance wise. Last month, they moved their stationery dept to one half of the appliance dept which they downsized and put more Toys where the stationery/book area was. They are trying to change the look of their seasonal area, but for the past month, there have been empty shelves in the dept. They took out a whole shelf and the floor is all worn out underneath. They placed a bunch of big merchandise there and it looks tacky. Furthermore, the store is always cold (no heat at all). The fans on the ceiling are just blowing the cold air around. There are several areas where the roof is leaking and they have a bucket on the floor. It is sad. They remind me of the Berlin Foodmart their last few years with the leaky roof. But at least Foodmart had air control. Who wants to shop in a cold store in the winter and a hot store in the summer? I'm sad because I don't want this Kmart in particular to go anywhere. I like shopping for things there. They have some pretty good sales and merchandise in general.
I went to the Waterbury, CT KMART today. What a sorry excuse for a store. A large section of the Men's department was roped off because the ceiling was leaking because of all the snow on the roof. In one section of the Men's Department there were about 8 or 10 plastic storage bins that they should've been selling collecting the water. And in another section there was several large garbage cans to collect the water.
The former Little Ceasar's is part of an extended stationary section and the rest is filled with toys. A door that leads to the kitchen area is flimsily held closed by a master lock.
Come to think of it the rest of KMART Plaza didn't look much better than KMART itself.
U guys do know its the sign that Kmart will probably close these stores. When a company starts to neglect certain locations, it's a sign they don't Care and want out.
But these Kmart locations aren't prime retail locations. The Waterbury location is just a dead location. However, the Cromwell location would be a great location for Target, they would need to knock the whole building down and rebuild.
If they knocked down part of the KMART Plaza in Waterbury they could build a Sam's Club there. There was talk several years ago that Walmart was going to move to the other side of Waterbury and convert their Wolcott Street store to a Sam's Club. The other thing they could do is knock down part of the plaza and build a Lowe's. Several years ago Lowe's was looking at a Waterbury for a store. Other than Sam's Club or Lowe's I don't see anything else that can be done with that location since Waterbury has everything else.
Kohl's is on East Main Street.
Walmart is across Wolcott Street.
Shoprite is in the next plaza over.
Price Chopper failed closed and became a relocated Shoprite.
Petco is in the next plaza over.
Bob's Clothing is across the street as is Stop & Shop. There are also two other locations nearby.
Petsmart is already in town as is Home Depot, BJs, and Costco.
Target is already in Waterbury on Chase Avenue.
Toys R Us is already in Waterbury at the Brass Mill Commons as is Michael's.
There are a lot of stores at the mall.
There isn't a Dick's Sporting Goods in Waterbury, but I don't think it's wise to have Dick's and Modell's in the same plaza. The same for AC Moore. Not wise to have it in the same plaza as Joann's.
Big Y won't work.
Bob's Furniture was located in Waterbury and closed when they opened the new store in Southington.
Job Lot is already in Waterbury on nearby Lakewood Road and Big lots and Savers are already on Wolcott Street in the former Shoprite.
Dollar Tree already has 2 locations in Waterbury as does Family Dollar. Dollar General is already in Waterbury.
Marshall's failed in Waterbury.
TJ Maxx is in the next plaza over next to Shoprite. It is a smaller store though being that it used to be AJ Wright.
Maybe they can also put a DSW there.

BONITA SPRINGS â€" The Big K is going away in Bonita Springs.
Kmart will follow a string of other businesses that have left the Center of Bonita Springs, a struggling shopping plaza at the northwest corner of Bonita Beach Road and U.S. 41. An everything-must go sale began March 3, with discounts of at least 10 to 30 percent on most merchandise luring the more than usual number of shoppers to the tired-looking store.

Thank you for this information, no like seriously thanks a lot! Ever since the rundown kmart near me closed up I started to become more and more interested in kmart, something about their rundown stores are fascinating to me. It amazes me to see what was once a major retail store fall apart piece by piece. I enjoy driving around place to place and about every two or three weeks I make my way to a kmart. Usually I go to the closest two near me one being 30 minutes away from my house and the other being another 20 away from the other location but im always up for going out of the way to others. The shippensburg kmart is one I have been to twice however for some reason its one of my least favorite kmarts mainly due to the fact its a cookie cutter kmart. All the old signs in the store have been replaced and its actually one of the better looking kmarts which is ironic since the other two closer to me are in a lot worse shape. Anyway I never would have know they were going out of business if it wasn't for your post so I thank you. The last kmart closing I went to I ended up getting a 7 year old mp3 player for 5 bucks, they weren't actually selling that product before the store was gob (so where the hell did they come from?) along with some clothes, food, and other miscellaneous products. I look forward to going to this store each week seeing the shelves get more bare until they finally have nothing left but 70% of the store roped off and only 5 shelves worth of product left.
thank you!

Probably if the sale is being run by a liquidation group, they had other items from someplace else they had closed out and just brought them over to get rid of them.
Like one time here (in NY), a Rite Aid was closing and had a big batch of postcards from other states/areas - had to be something they just threw in to try & get rid of.

I hope I can find more stuff like that. I'm a electronic junk collector of sorts if I see something electronic and cheap I buy it even if I will never use it. While a 7 year old mp3 player may be totally overpriced for $5 to most due to the fact it has only 256mb of storage and no sdcard slot to me its perfect. I can listen to music on it, but most importantly I can experiment using rockbox on it.
Postcards are always cool as well.

With the way things have been at both Kmart and Sears recently, they will probably close ore stores. The only positive thing I see happening as a result of the closings is the expansion of other retailers, such as Shopko, Gordmans, Toys "R" Us, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Burlington Coat Factory, Menards, or Meijer.

Might Kohl's open there? They probably were offered the location years ago but I guess they passed on it. The only Kohl's in Philadelphia County right now is the Andorra store in Northwest Philly. Maybe if this store does well, Kohl's will pay Kmart/Sears to break the lease of the other former Clover/Kmart in Northeast Philly on Frankford to open a Kohl's there.
But more likely is that either The Home Depot or Lowe's will open at the Penrose site, or maybe a company such as Sam's Club or BJ's. I wouldn't be too surprised if Walmart took the site, but they just might demolish and rebuild from the ground up, due to the awful condition of the building.

If the other Kmart in Newport News VA closes (actually in Tabb), I get the feeling most of it will become a Kroger to replace the small, outdated one across the street, but the already empty Super Kmart grocery section will become Total Wine or something similar.
I think of Kmart as always having been the "stepping stone" from the regional discounters (such as Bradlees, Caldor, Jamesway, Ames...) losing domination to the modern domination of the retail industry by Walmart. Sam Walton studied the secrets that once made Kmart great and copied Kmart in many ways, beating them at their own game with Walmart. The early Walmart stores for the first 20 years of the company were awful though. I guess it wasn't until companies like Grant City, Two Guys, Woolco, etc started going out of business (followed not long after by Kmart slowing their expansion) that it occurred to Sam that he could kick the butt of Kmart, who must have thought they had a near-monopoly (which to be fair they did) many places, but stopped caring about their stores once a number of smaller competitors shut down.

I get the feeling a lot of both former Kmart and Sears stores will someday be supermarkets. While supermarkets often used to be small anchors next to Kmart stores, supermarkets have grown so much in size in the past 60 years that the average Kmart building is the perfect size for one (and Wegmans stores have set a trend by being almost twice as big). Also, it isn't that unusual anymore for the ground floors of former mall-type department stores to become supermarkets.

Kmarts maybe but not sears, a lot of sears stores are mall locations and their not ideal for supermarkets.

The former Sears in Neptune NJ (near Asbury Park) became a Caldor, which makes perfect sense because Caldor and Sears were so similar. Then it was what I think was the last Ames ever opened. In fact one of the last Bradlees ever opened was also a former Caldor in Trenton, which before Caldor was a Mr. Goodbuys home improvement store.

Kmarts in Rexburg ID and WAynesboro PA are closing? but why arent they closing stores as rapidly as earlier in the year. The one in Minneapolis wants to stay open despite the city wanting to redevelop the property to pass a street through and will go along with the redeveloping, they dont want to leave that one, yet theyve closed some stores.
Tomorrow's the last day for Kmart's second go-around in Westlake, Ohio. The property owner decided to not pursue renewing the lease on the building, with the intent to redevelop that area so it better complements nearby Crocker Park. With this closure, Kmart really DOES become a 'destination' store, with the only other two closest locations being Middleburg Heights, OH (Bagley/Engle Rds, off of I-71) and Lorain/Amherst, OH (SR58, off of SR2; one of the few remaining Super Kmart stores). Additional locations are also open in Broadview Heights, OH (Pleasant Valley/Broadview Rds) and Brooklyn, OH (on Brookpark Rd near Ridge Rd, down the road from its former location, which is now Best Buy/Staples), but that's even further away from where I'm at.

I really wonder if Sears was doing fine before Kmart bought them. Of course the Sears Holdings representatives probably spin the truth and make it look like Sears was desperate to survive as was Kmart. Throughout the 80's, 90's, and early 2000s, Sears seemed to keep growing and growing, helped by the Sears Hardware stores popping up in shopping centers.

It was only a year for Kmart to be out of bankruptcy at the time (emerging from bankruptcy in 2003) when Kmart announcec they were buying Sears in 2004 (Finalized 2005).
I hope if Sears/Kmart do go out of business that someone else can save Craftsman, Kenmore, and DieHard (along with all other Sears product lines) from extinction. Ace Hardware is already selling Craftsman through at least a few stores.

I remember this store very well. I had worked at the Ames in Imlay City, just two exits up I-69.
Ames management was licking its chops when they opened that store, as the only competition between
Port Huron and Flint was that Kmart (which had seen better days, even back then) and two Fisher Big
Wheel locations.
And they were right. We blew away first year sales projections by more than 30%.
Sad to see as Michigan has always been Kmart's back yard.
Lapeer has grown so much in the intervening years I'm sure the competition is
extremely fierce by now.
Sears to close 80 stores after loss widens in first quarter
May 22, 2014
Sears plans to close at least 80 stores this year after widening its loss in the first quarter of fiscal 2014.
Although same-store sales increased 0.2% for the quarter, the company’s net loss climbed to $402 million from $279 million in the prior-year quarter. Revenues declined 7% to $7.9 billion, from $8.5 billion in the prior-year quarter.
Sears attributed its continued decline in revenue to the closure of Kmart and Sears full-line stores, as well as the divestiture of its Lands’ End business. But according to a Reuters report, analysts pointed to the effect of promotional transactions on gross margin, with one analyst going so far as suggesting that the company’s new business model â€" namely Shop Your Way â€" may be doing more harm than good since the company offered deep discounts on “already promoted, low-margin items.â€
"Sears is undergoing a significant transformation, and we fundamentally are changing the way we do business," said chairman and CEO Edward L. Lampert. "Our performance in the first quarter highlights the challenges we are facing as well as the progress we are making in this transformation. We are moving away from a company that was heavily based on selling products solely through a store-based network to a member-centric business model focused on providing benefits to our members anytime and anyplace. We are seeing progress in our transformation to a member-centric, integrated retailer, as we continue to invest heavily in driving our Shop Your Way program.â€

Maybe so, but they're downsizing the store in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania and supposedly West Hartford, Connecticut too.
Is the Sears in West Hartford in the former Lord & Taylor building? Long ago I saw a picture of a Lord & Taylor in that town that opened in 1954 but I don't know where that store was or what became of it. Also I know of a Sears in northern VA that once was a Lord & Taylor from the same period.

Nope. It's in The Corbin's Corner Plaza on New Britain Ave across from Westfarms Mall.
What happened to the former Lord & Taylor? Not the one in the mall, I know there must have been one before the mall was built, that the one in the mall replaced.

You could say the same for the store in Albany (NY) in Colonie Center, where they leased one corner of it to Whole Foods.
Given that most of the Kmart closings have been happening when their leases expire, that could explain some of the reason for leaving more of the Sears side alone, at least those in the malls (which is not all, but a large number of them).
At least with the older malls, many times the anchors owned their spaces, rather than leasing them, so if they still own some of them there wouldn't be a "lease ending" to cause them to close (and would be why it's Sears then leasing part of the space to others, like with the Whole Foods example). An example of this is why they left the old Jamesway (Mays) at the Dutchess Mall when demolishing the rest - since the Mays company still owns it (even if the stores are long gone).
I know, at least in the Phialdelphia area, Sears owns their locations at Neshaminy Mall and Moorestown Mall, but, I believe, lease their location at Bustelton Avenue and Cottman Avenue (the former Gimbels Great Northeast location)
Sears owns their store at Corbin's Corner in West Hartford, CT. The rest of the plaza is owned by Regency Centers Inc. They also own their store at The Buckland Hills Mall. The rest of the Mall except for Macy's and JC Penney is owned by GGP. Macy's owns their own store(s) under the name of May Dept Stores (which was the parent company of Macy's predecessor Filenes)

Our nearest Sears store is shutting down (Seaford, DE.) It's pretty small, sort of a glorified "hometown" store. Seems like they would have had enough business to maybe convert it to one of those? Few if any softlines there, basically tools/lawn & garden/TV/Appliances/Auto Center.
Did some shopping in Dover this weekend. I was struck with how fast & easy it was for me to buy something from Tractor Supply and then Lowes, followed by how long it took me to buy a simple item at Sears. Too many steps for the cashier, too many questions for me, plus all these little coupons printed out with the receipt.

Kmarts in Anderson TOwnship OH,
Yep...that's mine. It was a matter of time, really, but it's still sad to see it go.
It was originally constructed in the early '80s as a Gold Circle, but Kmart moved in in the early 1990s. It was branded as a Big Kmart up until the closing of Beechmont Mall and the post-demolition remodeling in 2004 (although, oddly, it was still identified as a Big Kmart on receipts as of 2009 or so). Little Caesar's closed along with the mall - the space it occupied was divided up into stockroom space, baby clothes, and restrooms.
Here's an interior shot from May 2006. It still looks basically the same.

At the rate they are going, I doubt there will be any Sears or Kmart stores left in a year or two from now. Not sure how Willow Grove is still open at this point. I was there a few weeks ago on a Saturday afternoon and I was one of only a handful of people in the store.

Just out of curiosity (and, I'm sure that I know the answer), is a closing sale the ONLY time Kmart stores go into their backrooms and completely clean them out of old merchandise? After finding NBA Live 2006 for the GameCube at the Westlake Kmart (which only opened in 2012 after a GOOB sale as Sears Grand, following the previous Kmart GOOB sale in 2007, so this was the THIRD ONE), and now finding VHS tapes - and one sun-faded CD, which I don't remember who the singer is, but it's someone current-ish - on sale at the Brooklyn Super Kmart, I have to wonder who's actually in charge of the inventory levels at these stores.
I can forgive the VHS tapes at the Brooklyn store - it's been around since the days of VHS, and I remember what a crowded disaster the GOOB sale was when its non-Super predecessor closed was - but, c'mon people... WATCH YOUR INVENTORY.

When I was with Ames, shortly after we acquired the Zayre stores, reports started emerging of
Zayre stores in Chicago with 30% shrink.
Every other customer could steal a television set and walk out the door, and it would still
not add up to 30% shrink.
The culprit was that their employees were of such low quality they could not do their
receiving paperwork properly. Hence it was all paper shrink.
I have seen similar problems working in a Hills store in a rough neighborhood. If poor employee
quality keeps you from checking in the freight properly, it certainly also keeps you from getting
it out to the floor in a timely manner.
Someone probably ditched this stuff inside a ceiling tile or disguised it as a layaway so they
could clock out and go home.

Plus, there are actually no longer any Kmarts in Bloomfield Township, d_fife. The store there actually closed in December 2013.

Probably is something that got stuck away somewhere, though there is a (slight) possibility that a liquidator had odds and ends they decided to get rid of and jut stuck a Kmart tag on it.
I remember we had a local mini-chain here in the Albany area called Joy Store that closed back in the 1990's - their tags had dates on them (they never used scanners so everything was price tagged) and some of the tags during the closing had dates from the mid 1980's on them, so it must have been stuff that didn't sell and got pushed into a corner and only found as they completely cleaned out the store rooms.

Why doesnt Shopko just buy out many of the remaining Kmarts and Sears, and sell some to Meijer, and maybe Fred Meyer. Kmart just isnt relevant anymore. its been going downhill for 25 years, in the mid 1990s they closed many and almost filed for bankruptcy.

Right now, I don't see most of that happening-Shopko is probably still focused on their Shopko Hometown stores and Meijer isn't expanding anywhere else than into Upper Michigan and Wisconsin. However, it's possible that Kmarts in the northern central US may be sold to Shopko, those in the Great Lakes area sold to Meijer and those in the Northwest sold to Fred Meyer.
However, I do know of a former Super Kmart that Meijer acquired located in Lincoln Park, Michigan, on Dix Highway south of I-75. That store opened as a Super Kmart in 1994, closed during the 2003 mass closings and reopened as a Meijer in 2004. Plus, one of the two Meijers in Portage, Indiana is located on the site of a former Super Kmart that closed in the 2012 80-store massacre.
Surprised I feel Kmart might as well shut down? How come some 2 million metro areas have 2 or 3 Kmarts left when there were many of them. When will Kmart shut down.
Claymont official, dunno about Paramus. Maybe somebody could pay the store a visit?

That box being stuffed under a shelving unit is an example of theft that was never discovered. As for the gum, probably the same thing: It fell between some shelves during a remodel/reset and was never found. NBA Live 2006 out for sale - brand new - in April 2014, two consoles AFTER the GameCube was actually a thing, is just odd, especially when - as I said before - that was in the THIRD store closing/backroom clearance event, after 2005's pre-Sears-Grand and 2012's back-to-Kmart "going out of business" sales.

The problem is that if Kmart brought Walmart, then the new Kmart/Walmart company would become an monopoly and would be forced to sell or close some stores.
That would be open to the interpretation of Federal regulators.
And given the current state of the economy, they might opt to approve the deal.
After all, if one goes down, what other large competitor would be left out there anyway?
They might opt to punt and save as many jobs as they can.

Thanks to my friend Jeff Ryan (who once was a DJ at Philly's Country Station WXTU) for sending me this link.
It won't be too long before Sears closes their Mall of America store in Bloomington, Minnesota. They survived the closing of Bloomingdale's, so I am pretty sure they'll survive the closing of Sears. I hope that Dillard's or Lord & Taylor replaces Sears at that mall. Sears was an original Mall of America tenant, having opened with the mall in 1992. The mall is the largest in the United States, and is visited by people from all over the world.
In addition, sooner or later, Sears may have to close their store at the Lincoln Park Shopping Center in Lincoln Park, Michigan. If that happens, that would be the final nail in the coffin for that strip mall that is otherwise 100% vacant, other than a Bank of America and a Big Boy in the outlot along Dix Highway. Not only that, they may have to close their Fairlane Town Center store in Dearborn, Michigan as well. I'm not sure how long that would stay vacant-there's a Lord & Taylor that has never been retenanted since it closed in 2006 and they also used to have a Saks Fifth Avenue that they demolished and replaced with upscale sit-down restaurants.
You know how bad things are now at Sears Holdings when they even had to shut down both the flagship Sears store in the Chicago Loop and the Big Kmart at the Gallery in Center City Philadelphia this year.
Bay city MI and Enid Ok are closing for Sears.

Does anyone know when Kmart last built and opened a new store?
The one in Somers Point, New Jersey opened on October 19, 2002.
That's right, Kmart actually opened a new store as it was still bankrupt! Plus, that's twelve years and eight days without any new from-scratch store openings!Photos, exterior and interior, here: http://www.deadanddyingretail.com/2014/08/the-last-kmart-ever-built-somers-point.html (http://www.deadanddyingretail.com/2014/08/the-last-kmart-ever-built-somers-point.html)
There is another Kmart that also opened in 2002-it's on West Washington Avenue in Las Vegas, Nevada.
I did a grand opening for Ames in Houghton Lake, Michigan where we opened a new store after having filed
for Chap. 11 bankruptcy. Construction on the building had already begun, and likely the court felt there was more to lose by not opening it.
Of course that pushed the opening past Christmas, which sort of made you wonder what was the point?
Nothing as bad as a February store opening in that part of the world! High temp for the week was +13F.
Another Sears closing. Pittsburgh Mills Mall, northeast of Pittsburgh in the
Alle-Kiski Valley area. This location is less than ten years old.

Sears/Kmart: We’re still in business, growing?
February 26, 2015 | By Mike Troy
Sears Holdings continues to lose money â€"- lots of it â€"- and same store sales declined again during the holidays, but the severity of the company’s losses have diminished, which has Chairman and CEO Edward Lampert believing further improvement is coming as the company transforms to what he calls “a leading integrated membership-focused company.â€
What exactly that means isn’t always clear, but for now it means that Sears Holdings is losing less money than it had previously, and with new liquidity options at its disposal those who have forecast the company’s imminent demise have again been proven wrong.
Now it is never a good thing when the best thing that can be said about a retailer is that its performance wasn’t as bad as the prior year, but Sears Holdings will take what it can get. The company did lose $159 million, or $1.50 a share, in the fourth quarter ended Jan. 31, but that’s a big improvement from the prior year’s fourth quarter when it had a loss of $358 million, or $3.37 a share the prior year.
For the full year, the company said its net loss totaled $1.7 billion, or $15.82 a share, compared to a prior year loss of $1.4 billion, or $12.87 a share.
Despite the still sizable losses, Lampert assesses the company’s performance in terms of its adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, or adjusted EBITDA. By that measure, Lampert characterized the fourth quarter results as a significant improvement, with adjusted EBITDA of $125 million reversing a prior year loss of $68 million.
"While we clearly believe that we can improve upon these results, we are pleased with the positive trend that started in the third quarter, and we currently expect this level of improvement to carry forward into our full year 2015 results,†Lampert said. “We believe that the changes we are making to focus on our best stores, reward our best members and pursue our best categories will help us continue to transform Sears Holdings into a leading integrated membership-focused company."
Participants in the company’s membership program known as “Shop Your Way†accounted for 72% of eligible sales at Sears and 74% of sales at Kmart, according to the company. Despite Lampert’s optimism around Shop Your Way, the productivity gap between Sears and Kmart stores and their chief rivals continues to widen.
For example, same store sales at Sears’ 746 domestic stores fell 7% while comps at Kmart’s 979 stores declined 2%. The comp declines contributed about $313 million to an overall revenue decline of $2.5 billion caused by two key events. The de-consolidation of the Sears Canada business and the separation of the Lands’ End business caused revenue to decline to $8.1 billion from $10.6 billion. Meanwhile, Kmart’s long-time rivals Walmart and Target experienced same store sales growth of 1.5% and 3.4%, respectively, on selling space that is already more highly productive than Kmart’s.
The widening gap is even more pronounced as Sears’ rivals Home Depot and Lowe’s, where the companies reported stunning same store sales increases of 8.9% and 7.4%, respectively, at U.S. stores. The top performing categories at Kmart were apparel, toys, jewelry and seasonal with declining categories including consumer electronics and grocery and household. Kmart’s comps would have increased by 2.8% if it excluded consumer electronics, grocery and household goods. Sears stores were negatively affected by consumer electronics.
Excluding the impact of consumer electronics, Sears comps would have decreased 4.6%, primarily driven by decreases in Sears Auto Centers and apparel. As doubts persist about whether Sears and Kmart can ever generate meaningful top line sales growth to drive true profitability, the company sought to reassured investors of its liquidity position and options available to further enhance financial flexibility.
According to Sears Holdings CFO Rob Schriesheim, the company’s actions in 2014 generated $2.3 billion in liquidity and it continues a transition to a capital structure that is more flexible, long-term oriented and less dependent on inventory and receivables.
“We have proven that Sears Holdings is an asset-rich enterprise with multiple levers to generate continued financial flexibility, while creating shareholder value,†Schriesheim said. In 2014, that meant closing 234 Kmart and Sears Full-line stores, the majority of which were Kmart stores, in addition to the Sears Canada and Lands’ End transactions.
Sears Holdings ended the year with approximately $800 million in availability under its credit facility, $250 million in cash and the possibility creating a real estate investment trust that would unlock the value of some of the company’s best store locations.
“We are continuing our efforts to develop Sears Holdings as a membership company, without the significant asset intensity of its traditional retail business,†the company said in a statement. “To this end, we announced in November that we have been exploring the formation of a Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) to purchase some of our properties and to manage them like a pure real estate company. While we can offer no assurances that such a transaction will be consummated, we have made progress and are proceeding towards its formation and separation, which is projected to occur in May or June of this year.â€
The company said it is targeting between 200 and 300 Sears and Kmart stores to be sold to the REIT with expected proceeds to Sears Holdings in excess of $2 billion.

So the stores listed such as West Hartford, Connecticut and Waterford, Connecticut are locations they're looking to sublease to other retailers?

Well, I know Lincoln Park, Michigan is a Sears; Saint Clair Shores, Michigan is a Kmart and Roseville, Michigan is either a Sears or a (soon will no longer be) Super Kmart. It's surprising that they would be subleasing those two soon.

FYI: This store is a former Super Kmart.
There's several more (Kmarts) as of late. Vineland, NJ was announced today. Brookhaven, PA has interest from Lowe's to buy/lease the location.
There's around 120 locations now missing from the store locator. Glitch or something else going on? You decide.

Home Depot and Lowe's are Sears rivals?? When did HD and Lowe's started to sell clothing and do auto service? ???
The Home Depot and Lowe's are Sears rivals in the Home Appliance and Hardware businesses, just like Macy's and Boscov's are Sears rivals in the clothing business.
I was wondering if Sears could sell Kmart? It seems like there is not very much common or real synergies between the two chains, except some Sears lines being sold at Kmart.
It's been in the news that Dollar Tree will merge with Family Dollar. Could spun off Kmart be a good fit with Dollar General? I think of many Kmarts now as very large Dollar General(s)/Family Dollar(s) with a clothing department, moreso than a competitor to Wal-Mart or Target.
I also think Sears would be better off paired with JCPenney, as both have more commonalities as struggling mall anchors. A new combined Sears/JCPenney could sell off sites and then use the cash proceeds to improve existing stores and compete against Kohl's, and hardware stores like Home Depot/Lowes and electronic stores like Best Buy, and mattress/furniture/electronic stores like hhgregg.
They can't because Kmart owns Sears.
Who in their right mind would buy Kmart? ???

Who in their right mind would buy Kmart? ???
Someone who has money and the right mind?
Like anything else, someone who has a plan and can afford to execute it could do just fine with the Kmart locations, the same way we're currently seeing other chains that can do fine with A&P locations that A&P as a company couldn't due to lack of someone who knows how to run the company and/or financial issues.
I lived through this when I worked for Ames and we acquired Zayre.
The Zayre stores by that time were pretty much unsalvageable. Poorly maintained dumps
with high shrink and a declining customer base. All it ended up doing was taking a perfectly
good Ames chain down the flusher and letting the management of Zayre prosper by dumping
these stores and re-organizing around the part they kept, which was T. J. Maxx.
I think whomever would acquire Kmart at this stage would face the same situation.

They can't because Kmart owns Sears.
Kmart's owner did acquire Sears, but it's now one company having two different chains.
Target was derived from Dayton-Hudsons. But those owners ultimately decided to keep Target and sell the dept. store to May Dept. stores.
In this case, Sears is the stronger division and Kmart has little future with Sears. It might be better selling it off rather than those stores closing and Sears not getting any value from them. In my opinion, the aisles of Kmart are most like Dollar General and Family Dollar, and there is a lot of overlap between the products one gets from these stores. Not entirely of course, but even Dollar Tree and FamilyDollar are different.
Maybe Dollar General that was left out of the Dollar Tree+FamilyDollar merger, would want to acquire the Kmart stores, or atleast some of them if it's too expensive to buy all of them. If it just selected maybe 30% of them, it might be still better for Sears to get that, than nothing. Dollar General is probably one of the only chains that might make a fit, and even so, they'd likely not use the Kmart banner.
A chain like Dick's might want Kmart but only for the real estate. I don't know how well penetrated Dick's Sporting Goods is across the country. But Kmart's remaining locations are likely not in thriving big box shopping centers where Dick's might want to be located, whereas Dollar General would likely have fewer qualms with standalone Kmart sites.
Sears still can't stop sales skid
December 3, 2015 | By Marianne Wilson
Sears Holdings Corp. is doing a much better job at cutting costs than at stopping its sales decline.
The retailer’s total revenue in the third quarter, ended Oct. 31, fell 20% to $5.75 billion, from $7.21 billion in the year-ago period, amid store closings and divestitures and a drop in apparel and consumer electronics sales. (Sears had 1,687 stores at the end of the quarter, down from 2,249 a year earlier.)
Total same-store sales were down 8.6%. Kmart same-store sales declined 7.5%. Sears domestic same-store sales fell 9.6%.
Sears narrowed its loss to $454 million, or $4.26 a share, compared with a loss of $548 million, or $5.15, a year earlier, helped by a reduction in advertising and payroll costs. Excluding items such as store closures and amortization, the adjusted loss widened to $2.86 a share from $2.71.
Sears said it continues to remain focused on its Shop Your Way loyalty program. Sales to people enrolled in program made up 75% of eligible sales for the quarter.
In a statement, chairman and CEO Eddie Lampert said he remains optimistic about returning to profitability by “concentrating on our best stores, rewarding our best members and pursuing our best categories through innovative solutions to product and service offerings.â€
“Through deliberate strategic actions, notably with respect to our promotional design and marketing spend, we have made meaningful progress in our transformation and reported a fifth consecutive quarter of improved year-over-year results,†he said. “As expected, the results of these actions have led to comparable store sales declines despite an increase in profitability. At the same time, we recognize a lot of work remains and we have brought in a number of experienced leaders to drive our business forward with a plan to win as a member-centric integrated retailer.â€
Heading into the fourth quarter, Lampert said Sears is focused on product offerings and promotions to enhance member engagement through the holiday season.
Sears CFO Rob Schriesheim said the company plans to continue taking “significant actions†to alter its capital structure to position it for profitability.
In July, Sears spun off 235 properties into a real-estate investment trust it created called Seritage Growth Properties, and it also created joint ventures that hold additional properties with three mall owners.

Pre-bankruptcy posturing. Ames did the same thing before we filed Chap. 11. We spun off the jewelry dept. as a leased dept. (to a wholly owned subsidiary) in order to shield the gold and diamonds from creditors.
A shame as I actually had a very positive experience with a Sears' ship-to-store purchase the other day. Though the store was incredibly dead for December.

I don't think she's going to do it. I think she said "I regret not buying it". --- BTW even if someone were to buy out KMART (not likely to happen) I believe the name is damaged goods and has been for many years. What are you going to do? Rebrand the stores and hope the new name catches on? That could take years.
My second to last visit to a KMART was in February 2013. It was to their rundown and now closed for 2 years location in Waterbury, Connecticut. I remember telling someone that I went to KMART. There mind was blown that KMART still existed. I didn't buy anything.

I guess Kmart will likely go under.
The last time I want to a Kmart was October 12, 2014-the final day the Super Kmart in Southgate, Michigan was in business. As of yesterday, that building is STILL vacant.
We made our first Sears purchase in some time, about 2 weeks ago at Dover (DE) Mall. We were shopping for an artificial Christmas tree and they had just what we wanted at a decent price. Observations: as usual these days, it was pretty dead. (Especially compared to the always bustling Boscov's.) The tree display was well done but there was no indication at all of where you were supposed to actually BUY the trees. We found somebody in an adjacent department who was able to get us rung up. Turns out you get your tree from the little pick-up department, tucked in a back corner of the store. The waiting area had it all: flatscreen TV to display customer information, but the screen was blurry and misconverged. Bulletin board for the employee of the month, but with no photo on display. Automatic doors to the outside, spaced such that you could barely fit in the waiting room without triggering them. A bench to sit on, that was outdated when the store was built in the '80s. A help window, boarded-up from the backside.
But, hey, the service was fast. I later found out I could have saved money if I had used the Shop Your Way thingie, except I can never seem to figure out how it works. I'm a member, I guess (I get constant emails) but they never gave me a card. Sometimes I'll get a friendly clerk at K-mart that will type in my phone number, but at Sears they didn't even ask.
Thought: what becomes of Hometown stores if Sears folds? I'm guessing Kenmore/Craftsman/Die Hard would survive any collapse, so maybe somehow those stores could stay around.

I heard the Hometown Stores/Hardware and Appliance stores were spun off, but they're closing locations too. Bristol, Connecticut closed in January 2014 and Wallingford, Connecticut closed in May 2015.
Went back to a Sears for the first time in nearly a year yesterday at Oakland Mall in Troy, Michigan.
It was, as usual, dead. One of the display TVs in the electronic department, one that was showing an episode of Gilligan's Island on WDIV 4.3, had most of it's screen damaged. I surprisingly, however, did wait in a line at checkout.
I won't be surprised if they happen to end up on a closing list soon.

No, they were displaying all the current versions.
In the Philly region, I'd guess Sears will close:
Burlington Center Sears - last remaining department store in this mall. No signage of Sears from the main road and mall is basically dead although open with about 10 stores.
Granite Run Mall Sears - Boscov's and Sears are remaining department stores, but the mall itself has closed, and has been fenced off in the parking lot and closed off inside.
Although Sears was the last remaining tenant of Hunt Valley Mall, it might be different as that store served as the primary store for Towson to Baltimore. I'm not sure if Burlington or Granite Run serve a unique role the same way.
I'd also guess the Vineland Sears and maybe the Oxford Valley Sears (being close to Neshaminy) could be eliminated.

A similar purpose was served for the former Mall of Monroe Sears, in fact, it was the only store between Lincoln Park and Toledo.

It all comes down to how much longer Eddie Lampert can kick the can down the road. Both Kmart and Sears are beyond saving, but Eddie's financial maneuverings have delayed their day of reckoning. Eventually he'll run out of assets to sell and the whole house of cards will collapse; it won't be pretty. I give them another year or two, tops.
Probably quicker if there is another severe economic downturn.
Ames probably could have held on for a few more years, except that 9-11
happened, giving them a fatally bad Christmas in 2001. Would not take much
to push Sears-Kmart over the edge at this point.

Didn't 9/11 also trigger Kmart's bout with bankruptcy within the following two years?

I would argue that Chuck Conaway's managerial malfeasance was more of a factor than 9/11 in Kmart's bankruptcy. Kmart's neglect of its older stores and supply chain mismanagement were long-term factors as well.

whats the chances Kmart will turn around?
I wish Sears and KMart would get a divorce... I think they need it, to save them both. I would love to see some K marts becoming Ames or Bradlees... And I'd like to see Sears become SageAllen :) or Fox's.

what of the towns where there is no Walmart or Target but only Kmart, whatll happen with those if Kmart goes. Whats the chances Kmart will go soonner years?
http://blogs.wsj.com/moneybeat/2016/04/21/heres-the-list-of-the-78-stores-that-sears-plans-to-close/ More and including supercenters in Lorian, TAYLOR AND ASHATABULA. will Lorain became Meijer?
ok Louisville and Jacksonville will have one kmart left.
Only 3 Super Kmart locations left after all this, and Kmart's total store count will be down in the low-800s.
This means that all Super Kmarts will now be concentrated solely in Ohio, the Taylor one was the last one in Michigan.
It'd be interesting how they'll going to repurpose it, there is already a Meijer a few minutes up I-94 at Fairlane Green and a Walmart Supercenter just a mile southwest.
Well, it looks like my local stores are safe for the time being, although another one in Philly bites the dust, leaving only two stores left in the city itself.

whats your take on Kmart w this. I also thought Lorians was one of the most profitable. I wonder if it will become a Meijer.
2 stores in Greater Pittsburgh, plus Uniontown, New Castle and Butler, PA.
I was by the Butler store today before I heard about this.

I had that thought a while back, seeing that the planned store in Avon - that was supposed to open this year - wasn't on Meijer's website. However, I've seen some activity over where it's supposed to be built, so I don't think they're waiting to go in over there. Menards is going in across from Walmart over in Avon, so they're out of the equation, too.
There aren't really a whole lot of options for what could move in, unless you do subdivide it. In the area, there's a newer Giant Eagle that swallowed the CVS next to it for its drugstore/liquor agency, so they're likely not moving. Both Lowe's and Home Depot have newer stores nearby, as do Walmart and Target. OfficeMax/OD isn't around anymore, so there's an option for some of the space. There's a new Aldi and Dollar Tree down the street, so those are out. There's a Save-A-Lot in - ironically - a portion of the old Kmart store alongside Tractor Supply, so that's out of the question as well. Pat Catan's already has a store over there - ironically, too, in the old Kmart - so building a larger one might be out, as well.
What could go in there? In all honesty, I'd love to see it subdivided and the small/old Big Lots on Oberlin Road and Marc's over in Sheffield Center move in to some larger, cleaner settings. Granted, the Elyria Marc's by the mall is rather large, but a decent chunk of it is closed off (where Cosmetics used to be in the front corner) and the old Pharmacy is still sitting there vacant, so maybe space isn't something that Marc's really needs out here. Then again, the Southland store - #1, the flagship location - is one of the largest around, so who knows why Elyria has wasted space?

Sears May Sell Off Kenmore, Craftsman, DieHard To Shore Up Losses
May 26, 2016 7:17 PM
NEW YORK (AP) â€" Long-struggling retailer Sears says it plans to try to leverage its strongest brands like Kenmore and Craftsman to help sustain itself as it posted a larger first-quarter loss Thursday and said sales fell at its Kmart and namesake stores.
The chain said it’s looking at options for prized brands that also include DieHard and Sears Home Services, including possible partnerships or deals that could expand their distribution and service offerings. It gave no specifics, but said it believes the Kenmore, Craftsman and DieHard brands can grow significantly with an expanded presence outside of Sears and Kmart.
Sears shares were flat at $12.52 each in late-morning trading Thursday.
Other major department stores such as Macy’s, Kohl’s and J.C. Penney saw sales decline in the latest quarter as they wrestle with changes in shopping preferences. Americans are making their purchases online and spending more on experiences like eating out rather than new clothes. And when shoppers do buy clothes, it’s at discounters like T.J. Maxx.
But Sears fared far worse, and analysts put much of the blame on the company itself. Sears Holdings Corp., based in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, has struggled for years with weaker sales, unable to keep up with companies that sell appliances, like Home Depot, or general merchandise, like Wal-Mart, or everything, like Amazon.com. Its stores, largely outdated and often grungy, are its albatross.
Sears saw declines even in appliances, where its Kenmore brand and others are an established presence, even as other retailers enjoyed increases from an improving home market. That, says Neil Saunders, CEO of the research firm Conlumino, highlights Sears’ main issue: “It has fallen out of favor with American shoppers who continue to abandon the chain at a fairly alarming rate.â€
The company’s Chairman and CEO Edward Lampert has pledged to investors that a turnaround is in store, but it has yet to happen. Sears has been selling assets to raise cash and accelerating store closures. In April, it said would close another 68 Kmarts and 10 Sears stores. That accounts for close to 5 percent of its nearly 1,700 stores. In 2011, it operated 4,000 stores.
Those closures come as Sears tries to shift its focus from running a store network to a member-focused business. Loyal shoppers receive incentives to buy. But those moves haven’t gained much traction with consumers.
For the quarter that ended April 30, sales at Kmart stores in the U.S. that have been open for at least a year fell 5 percent. At Sears locations, they dropped 7.1 percent. The metric is a key gauge of a retailer’s health because it excludes results from locations recently opened or closed.
The declines were fueled by declines in home appliances, clothing, consumer electronics, footwear and Sears Auto Centers. Lampert said Thursday that clothing sales continue to be hurt by heavy promotions from competitors.
Sears posted a loss of $471 million, or $4.41 per share, for the quarter. A year earlier, it lost $303 million, or $2.85 per share. Removing certain items, the chain lost $1.86 per share. Revenue declined to $5.39 billion from $5.88 billion.
The company also announced that Chief Financial Officer Robert Schriesheim plans to leave the company but will stay until a replacement is found. He will remain an adviser to Sears through January 2017.
I feel like that would hurt the company more than help it.
To me, what does Sears have EXCEPT those few brands? Trouble for the stores is that they're already selling them elsewhere. I can buy Craftsman tools at the Sears store, or drive around the corner & buy them at the Ace Hardware store. Meanwhile, Lowes/Home Depot have been working overtime to build up their own tool & appliance business. I had some time to kill recently & spent part of it browsing the appliance dept at a Home Depot. It wasn't giving anything up to Sears. And then, AutoZone/Advance et al have been beating the drum for their battery brands. Sears could easily find itself with 3 brands that really don't matter anymore...and without exclusive rights to the brands, the stores will be just that much more of a ghost town.
From what I saw in the 6/11/2016 Philadelphia Inquirer, the Kmart (former Clover) on Frankford Avenue is closing. It is next to a shuttered Pathmark Super Center (former Shop Rite until Supermarkets General left the Wakefern co-op in 1968)

A dead shopping center...two closed stores that are the anchors...I wonder what will happen to it. I wonder if it will stay empty like the Stop and Shop/Bradlees shopping center in Hartford.

Kmart workers believe all the stores are going to be imminently shut down
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/kmart-workers-believe-stores-going-162400821.html (http://finance.yahoo.com/news/kmart-workers-believe-stores-going-162400821.html)
Just out of curiosity, the latest batch of Kmart closing sales started in, what, June? I stopped by our last remaining Super Kmart - Lorain, OH - yesterday and saw that, for a store that's supposedly closing next month, it was still pretty well stocked. On the food side, there were a lot of dry goods and even frozen food available, but only marked down to 25% off (and, with the inflated liquidator prices as the 'before' prices, these 'after' prices were basically regular price). Even the deli was still open and trying to burn through the last bricks of cheese and cooked ham that they still had. To me, it looked like the only food that was actually gone was the fresh stuff that probably just expired away. On the other hand, the Electronics section was pretty much wiped of anything of value, except for a couple of TVs, a very small selection of DVDs, and a boatload of iHome USB car adapters and selfie sticks.
Is this normal and I'm just noticing it now, or is this store really just taking its sweet time in closing down? The Pharmacy was gone (with prescriptions transferred to the Walgreens across the street), as was Little Caesars. The in-store US Bank was still up and running.
Also, odd as this may seem, I saw some newer Kmart signage hanging in certain departments toward the front (some of the clothing departments, Customer Service, the far-off Restrooms by the old Food Court) while the old '90s multicolored signs were hanging in other departments.
Hmm.....this odd list of stores popped up on a 'deal' website....it's for an offer of $25 back in points when you buy shoes, but anyway, it's only valid at the stores on this list and the pdf is oddly named 'Liquidity_Details.pdf' (as in liquidation?). Might be an indication of stores that are going to close in the near future....I know at least a couple of those stores in my area are either in dying malls, or are Sears stores where they have already cut down the size of their sales floor in the last few years.

The end is coming for both Sears and Kmart sadly. Many articles state in anther 2 years the whole company will be gone.

The Kmart closings are good news - for Seritage. Paying a penalty of one year's rent for each terminated store lease, however, isn't so good news for Sears Holdings.

This Sears/Kmart downward turn has been going on since, what, 2003? That's got to be a record for the longest time any chain has been going out of business, right?
I saw that Kmart's BF ad was leaked today. I almost clicked to read it, but I realized that the only one near me is at least 30-40 minutes away, and that's in good weather. Factor in the potential for snow, and it's just not worth it.

Perhaps. The issue with chains who flirt with bankruptcy is that vendors
become reluctant to ship merchandise to them.

so how soon before Kmart becomes the way of Zayre? wasnt there in the past when Kmart and Zayre were battling each other? yet Kmart didnt seem to hurt busineses like Walmart in its heyday.
In the late 80's there was really no comparison between a Kmart store and a Zayre store.
Kmart was at it's peak. Their stores were clean, staffed and well-stocked. They held a strong
market share except in the Southeast.
Zayre by comparison was a broken down jalopy. The stores were dirty, run down, disorganized,
and running atrociously high shrink. That's why those of us who worked for Ames thought it
very grim news when it was announced that we were acquiring them.
Had we not bought them Zayre likely would have been gone in three to four years anyway.
Peter Hollis, the then-CEO of Ames, threw a lifeline to Zayre, his former company.
They were able to jettison the collapsing discount stores, while hanging on to the TJ Maxx
division, which remains profitable today.

many of Zayre stores were built in the 60s. why was Presque isle me one of their first, doenst make sense. What was beter Zayre or Ames. I liked Zayre better. of Kmart hwen I was a kid in the 1980s and early 1990s I loved Kmart and felt they were well stocked and cleaner, how its a sinking ship.
When I was young there was a Zayre store about five minutes from my house in Pittsburgh.
When I worked for Ames I spent six weeks at a Zayre in Jacksonville, Florida during the conversion.
I had worked in several Ames stores and been to many others for inventories, etc.
Hands down no comparison. Ames stores were far and away the cleaner and more organized.
The lone exception might have been the old G.C. Murphy location in Hillsdale, Mich.

Sorry to see Crystal River, Florida on that closing list. I have been to that store.
It's in a very interesting mall that resembles a circus tent.
I see Weirton, WV is closing too. Not far from me.

more will prob be announced in January and another wave will probably be announced in Spring. why are their last ones in Orlando and Jacksonville closing?
Rumor is that the CEO is holding out until July because something about him not being liable for shareholder losses? after that time. We will probably see a lot more closures, if not a total liquidation of the company after that time unless something else good or bad happens before that.

I said this to a friend and 2 from bangor said I am surprised its not already closed, another said not many cars in the lot. I will go to it soon . I last went to Bangor in 2006. Remaining Kmarts In ME: MAdawaska, Auburn, Augusta and Waterville.
Of the remaining Kmarts in Maine, it appears that the Madawaska store is the only one where Seritage owns the real estate.

That's being optimistic. I'm not even sure if they will make it thorough the rest of 2017 at this point. The CEO just had to throw more money in to keep it afloat and it was announced that Craftsman is being sold to Stanley/Black & Decker. The end is sadly near.

That is a huge vacancy, as Xpect Discounts closed last year and they were right next to each other. I heard the landlord has been shopping for potential tenants since last year. He probably knew they weren't renewing that lease. Target was one of the retailers, it would be a good fit there.
Shoprite might be taking part of the KMART spot. 2 people who work at Shoprite near me told me Shoprite was going to open in Cromwell in late 2017 or early 2018. Just don't know which family would own it.
I'm really saddened by the Craftsman sale; what else is left, aside from real estate? We were in Sears a couple in December and the place wasn't packed, but it wasn't dead, either. Major appliances, furniture, white goods-they were all devoid of people-but there were lines at the register in tools. We stopped in once again over the New Years weekend and the place was looking really picked over. I was surprised that they hadn't reduced Christmas stock further...what were they waiting for?

They're still trying to unload Kenmore and DieHard. When those brands and Sears Home Services go there will be nothing left to sell and they will liquidate. I think they've pretty much given up on trying to sell the Sears Auto Centers; there are no other suckers like Roger Penske waiting in the wings.
Inside Bangor's closing Kmart:
The store was unusually busy on Tuesday. Discounts ranged from 10 to 30% off... not too impressive yet.
There was 70% off remaining Xmas items (still pretty lame for a final store closing when the discounts were at 85% off at Lowe's and 90% off at Walmart!)

The liquidators know that the heaviest volume of shoppers come in at the earliest stages, so there's little incentive for them to discount too much.

True dat. When Geno and I went to the Cromwell, CT store on Saturday all the registers were open and they all had long lines. They were ringing out customers at the Customer Service Desk and there was a long line there too. I had never seen a KMART so busy before. And the stuff at the store was only 10-20% off.

My guess is the only thing that will remain of Sears or Kmart by 2019 will be an online presence I doubt that the brick and mortar stores will be around I think that they are doing basically the same thing that Ritz Camera was trying to do and go to an internet only such as Montgomery Ward . Time will tell but with the shop your way program they started I believe that is the direction they are heading .

I think at this point, it'll be like a Ames bankruptcy, leaving stores scattered across the United States closed. Maybe around 50-100 Sears and 300-350 Kmarts. This could be as early as the turn of the decade, or maybe out there in the late-2020s

there is only 4 in NH where I live and all scattered in NH. in west Lebanon, Rochester, Salem and Hooksett. 3 in CT? no surprise as it never was a major marke for them due to Bradlees and Caldor. even the one on 34th st in NYC is in bad shape. the only one left in NEBRASKA as of Jan is going to be a small town Alliance where the Kmart is the size of Watertowns but that too has a shopko express. only one in UTAH is on the AZ border in ST GEORGES. all in Salt lake city closed. Why is it after this wave none n ALABAMA, they had 30 at one pt.

there is only 4 in NH where I live and all scattered in NH. in west Lebanon, Rochester, Salem and Hooksett. 3 in CT? no surprise as it never was a major marke for them due to Bradlees and Caldor. even the one on 34th st in NYC is in bad shape. the only one left in NEBRASKA as of Jan is going to be a small town Alliance where the Kmart is the size of Watertowns but that too has a shopko express. only one in UTAH is on the AZ border in ST GEORGES. all in Salt lake city closed. Why is it after this wave none n ALABAMA, they had 30 at one pt.
Good ol' Walmart not being far away in Arkansas.

Well, it seems Connecticut is safe from any closures for a while.
when wll all of them close? OK first RI, Now Alabama w all Kmarts gone.
I think at this point, it'll be like a Ames bankruptcy, leaving stores scattered across the United States closed. Maybe around 50-100 Sears and 300-350 Kmarts. This could be as early as the turn of the decade, or maybe out there in the late-2020s
I give it 2019. and an announcement christmas 2018
Too soon, they got some more stores/money they can bleed.
More and More its "last Kmart" in this or that area.
That's true, but that doesn't mean their that close yet. There's still Kmarts in Palmer, MA. (That's a small city of 10,000)

You should ask whomever is taking you out there to take you to the Southbury KMART. I think they're still having their Going out of Business sale. Also while at the mall see if you can get some pictures of the huge junk store they have there called Shopper's World. (It's the only one in Connecticut). Make sure you check out the adjacent co-owned Brass Mill Commons. They have a Toys R Us there. And if you do go to The Commons try and grab some pictures of Ulta Beauty and Five Below. Both took over part (or all) of The former Office Max.
I like Brass Mill Mall alright. Some people complain about it because it's in the ghetto. I went to high school in the ghetto (EC Goodwin Tech in New Britain), so it doesn't bother me at all. (That area of New Britain has since been cleaned up nicely). Usually no one bothers me at The Brass Mill Mall, but once when I was sitting in the food court waiting for a buddy of mine to get his food, some random weirdo sat down with me to discuss religion with me. You're lucky that you're still a teenager, so presumably you will have an adult with you and you won't have to worry about that happening to you.

Ehhh, I'm probably not going to. I barely convinced them to go to Watertown, and Southbury is even more out of the way from Plantsville.

Shopko Express never had stores outside Wisconsin. Shopko had either regular-sized discount stores or Shopko Hometown stores in Wisconsin and the surrounding states.
Watertown, South Dakota has a regular-sized Shopko store.

From what the articles say, Sears/Kmart will be gone in some time.
This means that sometime in the near future neither brand will be around.
(Personally, I don't care)

me tooo as there is Lowes when it come sto SEars, there is WAlmart and TArget when it comes to Kmart. Kmart went way downhill to where I feel differently than Toys r us and its down to 360 stores.
There's also Shopko and Meijer for those looking for a regional alternative to Walmart and Target in a post-Kmart Midwestern United States.
As for post-Sears United States, look to JCPenney, Kohl's, T.J. Maxx/Marshalls/HomeGoods, Ross Dress For Less, Burlington, Target, Gordmans, etc. for fashion and home furnishings. (Bon-Ton, who owns Elder-Beerman, Boston Store, Younkers, Carson's and many other department stores will all be gone by this time as well.
Home Depot, Lowe's, Menards, Tractor Supply Company, Mills' Fleet Farm, etc. will be great substitutions for Sears for people looking for hardware, auto parts, gardening tools, etc.
For pharmacies in a post-Kmart U.S., there's Walgreens and CVS, as well as the in-store pharmacies at Walmart, Target, Meijer and Shopko.
Here is the Brandon Florida location which is closing, last sale day is June 24th.
I will be sad to see Kmart and Sears go, but at this point it's mainly for the nostalgia. Both stores were a big part of my childhood, but they just aren't relevant anymore.

For Department Stores there are also 47 or 48 Boscov stores in 7 States if you include their outlet store and their soon-to-open store in Milford, CT.
Kmart in Somerset/Franklin Township, NJ is closing (https://www.tapinto.net/towns/franklin-township/sections/business-and-finance/articles/franklin-township-kmart-set-to-close-liquidatio).
Can't say I'll miss the store. It was ugly, dated, cluttered, not very well run, and I don't have fond memories of my brief time working there.

Outdated, thats FOR SURE. like I have been to many of the parking lot with potholes, their stores look same as they did in the 1980s and many not much different since it opened 25 to 45 years ago. IT seems old Compared to WAlmart and Target who remodel their stores every 10 yrs.
Losing sales has gone on for years. The first big wave of closings was back in 1994 / 1995.
So none are left in VT afer this. whats that show of now leaving states and many states with 1 to 5 left.
Here's a photo of the (ugly) Bennington Kmart parking lot. Can't say I blame customers for staying away, especially after the Walmart expanded to a Supercenter a while back.

There wont be anymore Kmarts in VErmont with this closing.
But WAlmart expanding its store, it was only a matter of time I have to say that this happened.
Although they may call the Walmart a Supercenter, it is still small(er) than most, isn't it? When they first announced the expansion plans, they mentioned around 100,000 Sq. Ft, which isn't even as large as most regular Walmart stores were.
That, plus less other competition (no Target, no malls in the area) probably helped this one last as long as it did.
there is Albany 50 min away. DONT FORGET: this is the LAST KMART in Vermont. Is Queensbury Next?

Yes BillyGR. The Walmart in my town is a regular Walmart and is small. 95,000 Square Feet. It's in an old Caldor. The one in Waterbury, Connecticut is 140,000 Square feet is a regular Walmart and not a Supercenter. There's a Stop and Shop in the same plaza, so they can't have two supermarkets in the same plaza.
this says bankruptcy is imminent : but can they avoid it I doubt it https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2018/09/24/sears-ceo-proposes-restructuring-plan-to-avoid-bankruptcy.html
Finally happened...the Sears at the Eastern Hills Mall in Clarence, N.Y., is scheduled to close. An original anchor of the mall, it's been there since the 1970s. That means that EHM will have one anchor left since Macy's and Bon Ton left. This will likely hurt what is left of the food court business.

Sears sold the store to the companies that are redeveloping EHM into a mixed-use town center.

Sears Holding May file for bankruptcy!
There's no
may about it - they're filing. Eddie has taken the company off life support, and the lenders are lowering the boom. They've also stopped paying vendors. They're expected to file over the weekend.

It's rare, but vendors CAN push you into an involuntary Chap. 7 liquidation.
It happened to the company that employed me in college, David Weis Jewelers and Distributors.

That will ultimately be decided by the bankruptcy court, but plans call for the stores to remain open through Christmas, with the exception of about 150 stores that are supposed to close immediately.

yes 2 Kmarts are about to be left in CT, in Vernon and Watertown. CT was never a Kmart state it seemed even in Kmart's heyday.

I hope they keep their CT stores open until they all end up closing. I especially hope the Kmart in Vernon and Sears in Meriden survive until at least the end of the year. Still like them for clothes and accessories as opposed to Walmart.

Not sure what they mean by immediately. It's true that technically, they can close immediately and ship merchandise to stores remaining open. To me that's costly. In some areas, there are almost no Sears Holdings stores anymore. They would have to pack everything, it's not worth it, especially for the so many kinds of items department stores carry.
Maybe they mean "immediately" as the stores would go into liquidation sale immediately.

You are probably right. They must mean the 150 or so locations would enter liquidation sales immediately, while the rest would remain open until at least after the holidays, unless they can stay afloat longer.

Tell me about it. When I worked for Ames I spent a year in a new store that was planned to do $6 mil and we did $9mil. I had thus earned what was for me at the time a very substantial bonus of around $6000.
Then Ames filed Chap. 11. The venue was indeed the Southern District of New York. I filed paperwork with the court to try and claim at least some of my bonus.
Ames' attorneys responded by telling the court that they had already paid me. An out-and-out lie.
Only problem was, my only recourse was to schedule a hearing at the Bankruptcy Court, which was in Manhattan. I was living in Michigan at the time. I would have to take time off and travel to New York on my own dime. If my claim was ever settled for ten cents on the dollar I might have just recouped my travel expenses.
I had a young family and really could have used that money. Bankruptcy law is a scummy business.
I just have a feeling that they will have a disastrous Xmas season and the creditors then will push to liquidate and January-February they will announce they will close all and the last closes early Spring.

in the last 2 yrs some have closed where Kmart is the only store like it, and if they cant make it where there is no competition for a while away, they are done.
Thats what happened in Gas City Indiana.... Its a small town with only Kmart Dollar General and New Market in the same plaza and Kmart just closed on the last list of stores that closed and they still have the K sign up and the store closing sign up... Awkward but... its a very very small town.
