I live in southern NH where the majority of them converted to Sears last decade. There is one about an hour north of us in Claremont, NH, (which is also no longer a standalone Kmart) but most people in my area would never have a reason to travel north to do their shopping as opposed to the Nashua/Manchester areas, which haven't had Kmarts for years either.

AmesNewington

I was in the Cromwell Kmart yesterday, and am beginning to see the neglect the corporation puts in to their store. This store still gets relatively good business because of its prime location off the highway and near the Middletown line. But there is just no indication of the store being kept up maintenance wise. Last month, they moved their stationery dept to one half of the appliance dept which they downsized and put more Toys where the stationery/book area was. They are trying to change the look of their seasonal area, but for the past month, there have been empty shelves in the dept. They took out a whole shelf and the floor is all worn out underneath. They placed a bunch of big merchandise there and it looks tacky. Furthermore, the store is always cold (no heat at all). The fans on the ceiling are just blowing the cold air around. There are several areas where the roof is leaking and they have a bucket on the floor. It is sad. They remind me of the Berlin Foodmart their last few years with the leaky roof. But at least Foodmart had air control. Who wants to shop in a cold store in the winter and a hot store in the summer? I'm sad because I don't want this Kmart in particular to go anywhere. I like shopping for things there. They have some pretty good sales and merchandise in general.

ynkeesfn82

I went to the Waterbury, CT KMART today. What a sorry excuse for a store. A large section of the Men's department was roped off because the ceiling was leaking because of all the snow on the roof. In one section of the Men's Department there were about 8 or 10 plastic storage bins that they should've been selling collecting the water. And in another section there was several large garbage cans to collect the water.

The former Little Ceasar's is part of an extended stationary section and the rest is filled with toys. A door that leads to the kitchen area is flimsily held closed by a master lock.

Come to think of it the rest of KMART Plaza didn't look much better than KMART itself.

U guys do know its the sign that Kmart will probably close these stores. When a company starts to neglect certain locations, it's a sign they don't Care and want out.

But these Kmart locations aren't prime retail locations. The Waterbury location is just a dead location. However, the Cromwell location would be a great location for Target, they would need to knock the whole building down and rebuild.

ynkeesfn82

If they knocked down part of the KMART Plaza in Waterbury they could build a Sam's Club there. There was talk several years ago that Walmart was going to move to the other side of Waterbury and convert their Wolcott Street store to a Sam's Club. The other thing they could do is knock down part of the plaza and build a Lowe's. Several years ago Lowe's was looking at a Waterbury for a store. Other than Sam's Club or Lowe's I don't see anything else that can be done with that location since Waterbury has everything else.

Kohl's is on East Main Street.
Walmart is across Wolcott Street.
Shoprite is in the next plaza over.
Price Chopper failed closed and became a relocated Shoprite.
Petco is in the next plaza over.
Bob's Clothing is across the street as is Stop & Shop. There are also two other locations nearby.
Petsmart is already in town as is Home Depot, BJs, and Costco.
Target is already in Waterbury on Chase Avenue.
Toys R Us is already in Waterbury at the Brass Mill Commons as is Michael's.
There are a lot of stores at the mall.
There isn't a Dick's Sporting Goods in Waterbury, but I don't think it's wise to have Dick's and Modell's in the same plaza. The same for AC Moore. Not wise to have it in the same plaza as Joann's.
Big Y won't work.
Bob's Furniture was located in Waterbury and closed when they opened the new store in Southington.
Job Lot is already in Waterbury on nearby Lakewood Road and Big lots and Savers are already on Wolcott Street in the former Shoprite.
Dollar Tree already has 2 locations in Waterbury as does Family Dollar. Dollar General is already in Waterbury.
Marshall's failed in Waterbury.
TJ Maxx is in the next plaza over next to Shoprite. It is a smaller store though being that it used to be AJ Wright.
Maybe they can also put a DSW there.

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Two area Kmart stores will be closing in May.

Kmart employs 74 workers at the Greenville location.

Our coverage partners at the Hendersonville Times-News are reporting that the Kmart store at the Blue Ridge Mall in Hendersonville will close the same day in an effort to "reduce ongoing expenses."

QuoteTurn out the blue lights: Kmart closing its Bonita Springs store
By LAURA LAYDEN
Posted March 8, 2013 at 6:35 a.m.

BONITA SPRINGS â€" The Big K is going away in Bonita Springs.

Kmart will follow a string of other businesses that have left the Center of Bonita Springs, a struggling shopping plaza at the northwest corner of Bonita Beach Road and U.S. 41. An everything-must go sale began March 3, with discounts of at least 10 to 30 percent on most merchandise luring the more than usual number of shoppers to the tired-looking store.

Thank you for this information, no like seriously thanks a lot! Ever since the rundown kmart near me closed up I started to become more and more interested in kmart, something about their rundown stores are fascinating to me. It amazes me to see what was once a major retail store fall apart piece by piece. I enjoy driving around place to place and about every two or three weeks I make my way to a kmart. Usually I go to the closest two near me one being 30 minutes away from my house and the other being another 20 away from the other location but im always up for going out of the way to others. The shippensburg kmart is one I have been to twice however for some reason its one of my least favorite kmarts mainly due to the fact its a cookie cutter kmart. All the old signs in the store have been replaced and its actually one of the better looking kmarts which is ironic since the other two closer to me are in a lot worse shape. Anyway I never would have know they were going out of business if it wasn't for your post so I thank you. The last kmart closing I went to I ended up getting a 7 year old mp3 player for 5 bucks, they weren't actually selling that product before the store was gob (so where the hell did they come from?) along with some clothes, food, and other miscellaneous products. I look forward to going to this store each week seeing the shelves get more bare until they finally have nothing left but 70% of the store roped off and only 5 shelves worth of product left.

                                              thank you!

Probably if the sale is being run by a liquidation group, they had other items from someplace else they had closed out and just brought them over to get rid of them.

Like one time here (in NY), a Rite Aid was closing and had a big batch of postcards from other states/areas - had to be something they just threw in to try & get rid of.

I hope I can find more stuff like that. I'm a electronic junk collector of sorts if I see something electronic and cheap I buy it even if I will never use it. While a 7 year old mp3 player may be totally overpriced for $5 to most due to the fact it has only 256mb of storage and no sdcard slot to me its perfect. I can listen to music on it, but most importantly I can experiment using rockbox on it.

Postcards are always cool as well.

I hope more dont close
With the way things have been at both Kmart and Sears recently, they will probably close ore stores. The only positive thing I see happening as a result of the closings is the expansion of other retailers, such as Shopko, Gordmans, Toys "R" Us, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Burlington Coat Factory, Menards, or Meijer.

Might Kohl's open there? They probably were offered the location years ago but I guess they passed on it. The only Kohl's in Philadelphia County right now is the Andorra store in Northwest Philly. Maybe if this store does well, Kohl's will pay Kmart/Sears to break the lease of the other former Clover/Kmart in Northeast Philly on Frankford to open a Kohl's there.

But more likely is that either The Home Depot or Lowe's will open at the Penrose site, or maybe a company such as Sam's Club or BJ's. I wouldn't be too surprised if Walmart took the site, but they just might demolish and rebuild from the ground up, due to the awful condition of the building.

The reality is Kmart will stop bleeding once the company is gone, just like Sears. There is no way to save this company now.
