I was with Hannaford when that store opened. I was there for the opening week, always seemed like a really big store, especially with a PC nearby.  If I remember correctly the store was a test model for future hannaford stores.

Hannaford eyeing growth through small box

Hannaford Bros. is planning to open a 20,000-square-foot supermarket near its Scarborough, Maine, headquarters this summer that officials say could potentially serve as an expansion vehicle for the chain.

Kevin Holt, CEO of Hannaford parent Delhaize America, said the store would represent a new format for Hannaford, rather than a shrunken version of its typical supermarket, which is more than twice as large. While the initial concept would require some testing before additional units could roll out, Holt said the prototype had potential advantages including giving the growth-minded retailer flexibility to expand in markets where larger sites are expensive or unavailable, and an option to fill in geographies between larger stores.

“We think that for fill-in sites, it works pretty well,” Holt told SN in an interview Wednesday in Wilmington, N.C., where Delhaize held events for financial analysts and media. “We also think there can be a design standard around 20,000 feet that can be pretty productive. You see a lot in the marketplace today with stores like [Sprouts] and The Fresh Market.”

The prototype small concept, which he described as “completely redesigned around fresh,” will also prepare Hannaford to accept smaller sites where it can’t get zoning or permissions to build a full-size store, Holt added.

“What happens to a lot of retailers is they accept a smaller site, they find they get their assortments squished trying to fit in,” Holt said. “This isn’t a 45,000-square-foot store squished into 20,000 square feet.”

Some of the fresh ideas headed for that store â€" along with a new full-size new Hannaford prototype targeted for a 2016 opening â€" are being tested now in Hannaford stores including restaurant stations and prepared foods that Holt said would intensify Hannaford’s focus on fresh food.

Holt said the company similarly intends to improve its “Farmstand” produce displays utilizing more abundance, and invest in employee training around product knowledge to build on the brand’s strengths in fresh. “We want to take it to the next level,” he said.

Holt said Hannaford was also open to to growing by acquisition, citing several recent acquisitions of small chains in it its market area. He declined to comment on whether Hannaford was involved in a bid for Massachusetts rival Market Basket last summer, as some reports indicated, but said generally Hannaford would look at in-market rivals up for sale.

Maybe they'd be interested in expanding in to Connecticut and acquire Price Chopper locations in the state if PC decides not to convert them to Market 32.

I would have liked to see the interior of that store. Tiny stores like that make me excited for some reason :P

As it turns out, you're in luck; an independent (supplied by Hannaford) is opening in July in the same location

They could have said it will be a Shop n Save (or at least most likely, that's what Hannaford usually used for stores that they supply but don't own).  Not surprising, as most of these tend to be other (older) stores that are smaller than a typical Hannaford (though, had it happened in a year or two, they might have had their own solution to fill the space).

I don't think they have any others in NH?  At least not on the S&S website.

S&S completely pulled out of NH in 2013.

I'm not aware of any other banners Hannaford operates under. It licenses its Shop 'n Save banner to independent operators.

You used to be able to buy Hannaford store brand products here at Bottom Dollar Foods.
My mom really liked several of their store brands, and is disappointed that she can't find
them anyplace else.

Any chains with a Pittsburgh footprint carrying those these days?

Doubtful - the only other part of the "corporate" company is Food Lion, and they tend to be a bit more to the South (and I don't know if they use any Hannaford branded items anyhow, though they would have anything under the My Essentials label).
Also note that the Shop n' Save name mentioned that Hannaford uses for stores that they supply but don't own is not the same as the Shop n' Save stores that are in the Pittsburgh area (even if they do go up into parts of NY also).

TheFugitive

Bottom Dollar did carry both Hannaford and My Essentials brands.

My mom liked My Essentials too.

Hannaford has assumed ownership. The store will reopen on Friday (9/18) as a Hannaford.

A warehouse fire in South Portland, ME has left some Hannaford stores short on perishables

NY to the rescue (it says that they are trucking items from their NY warehouse, which happens to be about 10 minutes from where I am and quite convenient for this, since it's about 2 minutes onto the Thruway spur that leads into the Massachusetts Turnpike, then all highway from there to Maine).

The out-of-stocks have persisted, but they're gradually getting better. It will be some time before things are back to normal. Customer service staff is overwhelmed by the shortages; I wouldn't want to be them right now.

It's affecting pallet/cardboard pickup in the area of Hudson Valley NY stores as I see it. As a vendor serving certain stores in the Hudson Valley, I see numerous stores in this situation. One store had probably over 60 CHEP pallets waiting to be taken back...

This is a smaller store without pharmacy. A Stop & Shop is half a mile away. The store was originally slated to close last August when its lease expired. Click on the photo for a story about the closure.

I wonder if Big Y will jump in on this. They're only about to begin resetting the ex-Hannaford locationd and can toss this onto the end.

It's going to become a bowling alley, restaurant and tap house. Hannaford sat on the property for years to keep competitors out; they bought out the owner of the GSM and shut down the store when they took over the former Stop & Shop. Hannaford is still sitting on the former Ames in Dover, NH. Click on the photo for a story about the development. When I lived and worked in Kennebunk this was my regular supermarket; it was a small but well-merchandised store.
