The supermarket used to be a Pic'n'pay, then it became a Shop'n save and finally Hannaford. But they basicly installed a Hannaford logo in the same sign frame on the building.  I don't know the detailed history of this location.

I know it is 23,000 sq.ft. and opened in either the 50s or 60s.

     That Hannaford is great. I was surprised when I saw it in 2000 -- when I was on Rt 5 going to my parents summer cottage - after NOT being there in 2 years. I stoped in it and got my food for the weekend.

     Here - Hannaford owns the Sweetbay stores.

I never shop at Hannafords much, but I just like shopping at the store when I can, since its just so big, compared to Price Chopper, and not as packed.

It is quite the experience. I miss the days when it was a Big Box format. That was a lot of fun, even as a kid. The parents didn't have much trouble keeping us entertained while shopping there.

Now it is about the Shopping experience. The company wants you to to like its shopping environment. You're right, most of the stores are pretty good size, and are very open in terms of space.

The Rutland Herald website has a large photo album of the Hannaford store which recently opened in the building that Stop & Shop built but never occupied in Rutland, VT.  It would be nice if more newspapers did photo albums of new stores.

Supermarket data breach exposes more than 4 million accounts

A Maine-based supermarket chain on Monday reported a data intrusion into its computer network that has put some 4.2 million customer credit and debit card accounts at risk, according to the company and press accounts.

No personal information, such as names or addresses, was accessed, said Ronald Hodge, CEO of Hannaford stores in a letter apologizing to customers. "The stolen data was limited to credit and debit card numbers and expiration dates, and was illegally accessed from our computer systems during transmission of card authorization," he said.

Hodge added that the intrusion affected customers at Hannaford stores, Sweetbay stores in Florida and certain independently-owned retail locations in the Northeast that carry Hannaford products. "We sincerely regret this intrusion into our systems, which we believe, are among the strongest in the industry," he wrote.

Of the credit card accounts exposed, only 1,800 cases have been reported so far, the Associated Press reported citing a Hannaford executive. The data breach began on December 7 and wasn't contained until March 10, the same executive told the AP. Hodge said Hannaford is cooperating with credit and debit card issuers to ensure affected customers are protected. The company is working with law enforcement to help identify those responsible.

The breach of 4.2 million accounts is significant, but nothing compared to the 45.7 million accounts compromised over a two-year period in a recent data breach of customer records at TJX Companies, the operator of T.J. Maxx and Marshall's retail chains

I have heard recently that Hannaford is planning to expand into Connecticut.  Is this true??

I haven't heard anything about it. Hannaford is usually pretty good at announcing where they are opening new stores. If I hear anything, I'll let you know.

Hanaford would probably do well in Newington CT where the old A&P was. I hope there's truth to this. I'm desperately waiting for something to move in there.

I think Newington would be to small for them.  There is talk that they may move into the old Manchester CT Super Food Mart on Tolland Tpke.  A vendor told me this.  They are the best in getting this type of information!!

Joeg: Then what other supermarket chain would be good for Newington? If Manchester could boast almost 6 supermarkets, then why can't Newington hold 5 supermarkets? The town is growing by the minute.

Newington has Stop and Shop, Shaw's, Price Chopper and specialty market Stew Leonards, which is not a traditional supermarket. Manchester has Stop and Shop, Shaw's, Big Y, Shop Rite, Highland Park Market and possibly Hannaford. Plus Manchester and (soon) Newington will both have Sam's Club. Newington is catching up to both Manchester and Enfield as destination shopping districts with "everything". There are many options for the Newington Center supermarket replacement though. There's Big Y, Shop Rite, Geissler's, Highland Park, and even A&P could come back if they wanted to.  (very unlikely though)

I guess I'm just anxious to see such an accessible plaza in town get revitilized. It would also be nice to get a new option in the area.

The Newington Foodmart plaza is in serious need of an anchor store to get the business into the plaza, Right now it is pretty depressing, I read that the mayor wants to make downtown more of a walking accessable area, personally i would love to see a small grocer like Geissler or Highland park move in.

That would be a good fix for the old Newington Food Mart.

A Geisleer's would be better than a Highland Park(too expensive.) Big Y wants big stores and Food Mart is to small.

If Hannaford or even a Big Y would come in, they would knock down the entire plaza first and then build it from the ground up.

I would be even better if Shop Rite would take over the building.  (maybe Price Rite??).

Every time I go by the Foodmart plaza, it depresses me. No sign of human life roam the plaza anymore. That's why I feel that any supermarket, if willing to expand the space, would be great there. If Hannaford were to come to Connecticut, they should look in to Newington as well as Manchester. Both towns retail wise are similar and are centralized towns in the state.

Foodmart was never busy because they decided not to give the location a chance by expanding and renovating it. It just became a 7-Eleven type store, which was not in A&P's best interest. Guranteed, if "new blood" can step in with a new planned strategy, the store would do well.

I remember when the plaza had some life, AC Peterson's and the Hallmart store (Peterbob john) as well as Foodmart.
I agree anything that would come in would be a huge asset.  
Can't do pricey or it will fail for sure there is too much competion in town.

Hi folks! I've been lurking for a while, but I thought I might as well contribute...

The Hannaford at the Airport Mall in Bangor (where I live) has been undergoing an extensive renovation, and I've lately taken some photos of the progress (at least externally).

They've still got quite a way to go inside, but from the looks of what they've finished so far, it's going to look fantastic. :cool:

Sorry, I didn't see this post before -- the grand re-opening is actually today, I believe!

I was in the store just last night -- it's absolutely gorgeous. No doubt currently the nicest-looking supermarket in the Bangor area.

And they put in those self-checkouts, which I love... :bigsmile:

The graphic package of this store is still original GU with a little upgrade by Hannaford.
