The Emerald Square mall in Attleboro Mass had a Lord & Taylor in the former Lechmere. The entire buiding had been gutted, new escalator installed, etc. Then it shut down. Filene's now has there bed & bath and men's departments in the building. I guess it will become Macy's once that transition is complete.

Is the Lord & Taylor in the Braintree Mall still in business?

Federated puts Lord & Taylor up for sale
Lisa Biank Fasig
Cincinnati Business Courier
Federated Department Stores Inc. is planning to sell off the venerated Lord & Taylor chain, the $1.6 billion group of upscale stores inherited through its August acquisition of May Co.
A deal is expected to be concluded by the end of 2006, though Federated (NYSE:FD) did not identify potential suitors of the 55-store chain. In the meantime, Lord & Taylor will be treated as a discontinued operation, not contributing to sales or profit. As a result, Cincinnati-based Federated expects fourth-quarter earnings from continuing operations to be reduced by 10 cents per share.

The announcement is not a surprise. Federated had made clear since acquiring May Co. for $17 billion that it was unsure of what it would do with the Lord & Taylor chain.

"After a thorough review, we have concluded that Lord & Taylor does not fit with our strategic focus for building the Macy's and Bloomingdale's national brands," Terry Lundgren, Federated's chairman and CEO, said in a press release. "However, Lord & Taylor is a niche specialty retailer with a great name, many outstanding locations, an experienced management team and a strong customer following that makes it a desirable business."

Asked why Lord & Taylor is not a good fit, company spokesman Jim Sluzewski explained the stores are on average smaller than Federated's department stores and that a considerable number operate in malls that also include a Macy's, creating too much overlap.

Sluzewski declined to provide a range of prices that Lord & Taylor could fetch, but said it will go as a whole business. The 180-year-old company operates one outlet at the Walden Galleria in Cheektowahga as well as additional stores in New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maryland, Virginia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Delaware, Florida and the District of Columbia. It employs 12,000.

"There's been a lot of interest as we announced that the division was being studied," Sluzewski said, "but we've not engaged in conversations with anyone."

The divestiture of Lord & Taylor will reduce the number of Federated's department stores to about 845 and result in a company of just two brands: Macy's and Bloomingdale's. The Macy's brand alone will count more than 800 locations and stretch from coast to coast.

Federated also is looking to sell the 700-store Bridal Group business acquired with May. The business operates the brands David's Bridal, After Hours Formalwear, and Priscilla of Boston. Sluzewski said he expects a deal to be finalized by the en of the year.

Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase are advising Federated in the Lord & Taylor sale.

Another anchor away?
Lord & Taylor sale could change mall's look
By Robert Gold
THE NEWS-TIMES

DANBURY ? In less than two weeks, Filene's will start its final round of sales before closing at Danbury Fair mall. And another momentous change could be just around the corner.
Federated Department Stores announced last week it's selling all 55 Lord & Taylor stores, which includes a location in the Danbury mall. Depending on the buyer, the store could continue on or meet the fate of Filene's.

By the end of the year, two of the mall's five anchor stores could be gone.

What happens next at the mall?

Currently, all five anchor stores ? including Sears, JC Penney and Macy's ? are department stores. While mall officials weren't talking Monday, some economic observers think possible replacements for Filene's and Lord & Taylor might not be traditional department stores.

Possibilities include large specialty stores such as Burlington Coat Factory, a movie theater multiplex or several restaurants.

"It could end up being a different way of looking at anchor space," said Stephen Bull, president of the Greater Danbury Area Chamber of Commerce.

Bull said the mall's popularity should entice new tenants.

Drawing its base from New York and western Connecticut, the 180-store mall attracts an estimated 10 million people every year. It's widely considered one of the most profitable malls in the region.

According to research on the mall's Web site, the average household income of Danbury area residents is more than $112,000, compared to roughly the $65,000 nationwide average.

"It's always been a successful mall," said Fred Maidment, an associate professor of management at Western Connecticut State University.

The changes at Danbury Fair mall started when Federated Department Stores bought May Department Stores last fall. May had owned Filene's and the somewhat more upscale Lord & Taylor.

Federated, which owns Macy's, decided to close seven Filene's, including the Danbury locations. The 40 others are being converted into Macy's stores.

Federated spokesman Jim Sluzewski said closing sales will began at the Danbury Filene's starting Jan. 29. When the merchandise runs out, it will close. No buyer has been picked yet, he said.

Most of the 270 employees have or will be offered jobs elsewhere, company officials have said.

Sluzewski said the Filene's locations could possibly be sold to different owners. But Federated wants to sell the Lord & Taylor stores as one package he said.

Federated officials said they are selling Lord & Taylor because they want to focus on their other department stores, Macy's and Bloomingdales.

Sluzewski said the 70,000 square-foot Danbury Lord & Taylor is too small for a full department store. Macy's occupies about 241,000 square feet of the 1.2 million-square-foot mall. Filene's takes up about 172,000 square-feet.

Sluzewski said Federated would even consider selling to competitors. "That's not out of the question. We are talking to retailers, we are talking to developers," he said.

Several observers have said more upscale retailers like Nordstrom or Saks Fifth Avenue could fill the department store void.

Shoppers were surprised to hear Monday that the future of Lord & Taylor might be up in the air.

"I like it (Lord & Taylor) because it has higher end brands you can't get at other department stores," said Brookfield High School senior Anna Goddard. She likes the brand Free People. "(The store) has nice tank tops and sweaters."

Goddard said she wasn't sure what type of business she would choose to fill the vacant mall space, but she said a theater would be a nice idea.

Her father, Dean Goddard of Millbrook, N.Y., said he could tell Lord & Taylor was going downhill because the quality of merchandise over Christmas was "mediocre." He bought some Christmas presents there.

"Lord & Taylor used to mean quality," Goddard said of a chain that debuted in 1826. It always "has been associated with high quality, the name, more so than Macy's or Filene's. It ranks up there with Brooks Brothers in sales and now it's gone."

While another department store is a possibility, more and more malls are turning to other stores.

According to a 2005 report from the International Council of Shopping Centers, an industry trade group, about one-fifth of mall anchor stores are not department stores. Alternatives include cinemas, sporting good stores, large-scale restaurants and discounters like Wal-Mart or Target.

Malls are focusing less on department stores because several mainstays, such as Montgomery Ward and Alexander's, went out of business in recent years.

"I think you'll see someone take their space," WestConn's Maidment said of Lord & Taylor and Filene's. "I think you'll see a more specialized operation take the space than a general, traditional stores take that space."

Maidment said it's harder for traditional department stores to stay competitive as more retailers, ranging from Wal-Mart to JC Penney, offer higher-priced name brands.

He suggested that stores with more focused inventories, such as L.L. Bean or Burlington Coat Factory, could be options.

"It won't be going head to head with Macy's," he said.

Not sure why The News put that picture in the paper the day L&T's sale was announced and not one of the actual store - but that is NOT the Galleria store.  It's much older - you can tell the logo is an older version than the current one (which is the logo at Galleria and has been since the store opened in 1991).

I'm guessing they piggybacked on an AP story that included that picture.

yeah, the Walden Galleria store has the logo to each side of the inner entrance, just like the former Albany store, and the Syracuse location.

Here is a picture of the Westfield, New Jersey Lord and Taylor:

As for the logo of the Lord and Taylor of Stamford, CT, the same one is on the Lord and Taylor in Boston.

KyleRF

Three things.

First, there are 2 Lord and Taylor's in Paramus, New Jersey, and they are both open. There is a freestanding one further up Route 17 that is closed off from a mall.

Second, I will upload a picture of the King of Prussia Lord and Taylor. It looks like the same one at Freehold Raceway Mall, although the actual building is tan.

Third, what location is that Lord and Taylor that is closed down at?

KyleRF

Does anyone have pics for the Lord and Taylor at Scarsdale, New York the one in Washington, DC, or the one in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania?

KyleRF

This is a pic of the Lord and Taylor of the Fashion Center in Paramus, New Jersey. It looks really old and does not have the entrances most Lord and Taylor's have today. It also has the old logo and reminds me a lot of the Lord and Taylor of Boston store.

And yes, it is still open. I went to it yesterday.

KyleRF

Someone said something about the Braintree Mall Lord and Taylor.

When I was in Boston last month, I went to the South Shore Mall and it was still open, and quite crowded too.

that's true. suprisingly, my friend in Canada read the new Lord and Taylor logo and said the right name! :yup:

jmn3

It's not Times New Roman...but I don't think it's too surprising that someone from Canada, or anywhere for that matter, could come up with what the logo is saying.  You'd have to be a complete moron to not be able to look at that for a second or so and figure out the words.  Plus, I would venture to say that a large chunk of people have heard the name Lord & Taylor before.

KyleRF

The Walden Galleria is very close to Canada isn't it?

And by the way,

The Lord and Taylor in Rockaway looks almost exactly like the one in Danbury.
