After 12 years in the Capital Region, Wakefern is closing all of the stores in the region by December 9th. Hudson is not included.

Sort of a surprise, but the last line isn't, as that store has been there since the first time their then member Big V closed stores in Albany.  Also, in Hudson, the Price Chopper actually closed down and ShopRite moved into their store (it was a bit larger and newer), so there is no other actual supermarket aside from Aldi (and of course Walmart's grocery section) - Hannaford is out of town and has a strangely small store even though it is not that old.

UPDATE: The stores are expected to close earlier than expected, and are now expected to close no later than Saturday. Also they are in violation of the WARN Act, and employees are expected to be paid through January 18th.

Yep, they just ran out of stuff to sell off :)

The other part was mentioned originally, as NY's version of that law requires a 90 day notice, which they would not have reached even staying until the original 12/9.

Just announced that the buyer is... Price Chopper.

Not quite what most were hoping for, given that they have stores reasonable close to most.

So far, looking to convert the North Greenbush & Niskayuna stores to Market 32, sublease the Slingerlands one (as they are just a roundabout away) and uncertain for the two on Central Ave (Albany and Colonie).

With how close each ShopRite is to an existing Price Chopper or Market32, what are they supposed to do with their existing locations (especially North Greenbush and Niskayuna)? I guess they will have to sublease those locations as well.

They said that nothing in Niskayuna would close (it's a couple miles in two different directions to other stores, and that area is busy enough that it can take time to go those what seem short distances, from what people have posted.

They didn't say anything on N. Greenbush, but the two existing stores are just as far (maybe even a bit further in one direction) than with Niskayuna, and Route 4 can be just as bad during rush hours.

Plus, that spot is great to catch people heading east on 43, given the lack of retail beyond (only one Hannaford in West Sand Lake, which is a former independent and thus smaller than most, then nothing until you get to MA), so they may find it busy enough not to impact the other stores as well.

For the others, as noted they already plan to lease out Slingerlands, and haven't decided on the other two, though both neighboring Price Choppers are ones that have NOT been redone into Market 32, so they might opt to just move to the far newer buildings and then others could take the old spots - also eliminates the issue of being open while renovating.
