21 stores sold to Kroger and Food Lion; the remainder to be sold to employees or individual operators or closed. Pharmacy is shutting down at remaining locations and the files sold off to other pharmacy operators.

It always seems odd that that is some sort of factor.  In this area, all of the major chains have store(s) that don't have pharmacies (many times due to having a drugstore chain within the same plaza) and all of those stores have existed for many years without any issue.

While a pharmacy may bring people into the store and thus help sales of other items, it doesn't really seem to be the only thing that makes a difference between a store being profitable and not.
