Similar battle going on with a famous sign here in Pittsburgh.

This is a HUGE electronic sign that runs along the top of Mt. Washington
facing downtown and the stadiums   It has been in place for 90 years.
At night it would light-up in neon ads for various sponsors (most notably
Iron City Beer, Alcoa and Bayer) and also gave the time.

By 2014 it had become a rusty eyesore.  Bayer ended their contract with the
billboard company and asked that it be turned off, not wanting to be associated
with that.   Plans were made to upgrade to a state-of-the-art LED sign, but due
to zoning fights and other things that never happened.

Wanting to make some kind of money on the sign, the billboard company just
covered the entire thing with a tarp bearing an ad for Sprint.   This caused the
city to go ballistic and drag them into court, asking for it's removal.

The long-term future of this historic sign is still very much in doubt.
