Very cool city.  The people there were friendly and polite.  Some nice beaches nearby.  I felt very badly that the company went bankrupt and they were all out of a job a year after I left.  Went to a football game at the old Gator Bowl which was a fun experience.

I found something. I found an old photo of where i think the old King's is in statesville. In this picture, you can see KI. Is this kings?

Here

You cannot see attachments on this board.

Looking at the address to the former Mammoth Mart / King's store on Google Earth and comparing it to the photo, I'd say that the store in the photo is most certainly King's, the building on the top left still looks the same

After finding proof in a newspaper, there was never a Mammoth Mart in Newtowne plaza, located in the former Kings. I found an advertisment for mammoth mart that linked to the location i thought it was, on Quarry rd & N center st. at Town and country shopping center.

So I found this post saying "AMES DEPARTMENT STORES TO CLOSE ALL 17 STORES IN NORTH CAROLINA" meaning there are more.

The locator on the main page seems not to work right any longer, but it does show a map that includes NC (but not SC or other states to the west of that), so I think that means there were at least some listings for that state.

Sad that the Store Locator no longer works. I used to use it all the time so I could see the stores on Street View without having to find them manually.
It's the same store, only without the J and the Way.   <- Common joke about Jamesway stores that became Ames stores.

Im attempting to make my own store locater.

The Archived version of the store locator works

That's a great find!  If the web archive version of the store finder works it should be a pretty simple matter for the webmaster to re-install it here.

Clicking on the link only takes you to the first part of the link, before the "www.amesfanclub" for some reason

Copy & paste the entire link and it should work

Quote from: ian on December 27, 2022, 01:06:39 PMDoes anybody know if any ames/hills/kings existed in NC?

I made a list of discount stores and where they were a while back (that I'm still working on) and my data for North Carolina currently shows that:

Ames - 7 locations
Hills - 2 locations
King's - 21 locations

None of the King's locations were converted into Ames and only 1 out of 2 Hills stores became Ames (that data could be incorrect, however)

Keep mind mind that some of information / store locations might be missing

It would also appear that Zayre also had other locations in the state that for whatever reason didn't become Ames

"I made a list of discount stores and where they were a while back"

Speaking of which, I just uploaded said list and made it publicly visible:
